that was from 1982. wow, 30 years ago and she nails it. i was in college in 82. we programed computers with punch cards. they would punch holes into cards and the machine would read commands. the cards would wind up in the hopper card file. named after her.
@OryxconLara Lucky you! With dead seriousness, if I were you I'd make sure I got buried with that nanosecond when I died....either that or pass it down to a young person who will appreciated it!
@chattychar "to the men who only think that men are knowledable with programming/computers"
Real computer nerds know that women were in the scene right from the start. For example, Lady Ada along with Charles Babbage. But it's still a male-dominated field; guys generally seem to be into things like engineering, electronics, math and so on more than women. Traditionally that may have been due to women being tied up with kids, but even today women are still the minority in these subjects.
@xViklovex you are missing something indeed. She said 11.8 inches, not 11.6 inches. Which comes out to 980 feet (well actually 983, but there is a slight rounding error there).
Having been in computer science now for almost 20 years, one forgets on whose shoulders one stands. Some days I feel we've only gotten to a red Model-T. There is still so much we can do, if only we had the money. Agree, love the nano second thing. So simple, but so true.
I remember when this segment first aired. I was a teenage computer geek, and was so blown away. What a privilege to stand on the same planet with such as Rear Admiral Hopper.

If they had the Model T in '82, what are we driving now? Ford Fairlanes?

The Ford Model A. Moore's Law still applies and we're not seeing it break stride.

Thank you so very much for posting this! I recall hearing Adm. Hopper at an ACM meeting in 1977. I *still* have my nanosecond!

@chattychar In general, men are. It's not like we'd mind if more women were interested, it's just a very unusual occurrence.

@lordjavathe3rd True. There aren't a lot of women in the field. what up with that?

But 1 microsecond is 1000 nanoseconds, and 11.6in*1000 is 966ft. Am I missing something or is Ms. Grace Hopper wrong?
