No, its no Ottoman instrument. It was developed in Orient... Ottoman music is a mixture in both instruments and music style between byzantine, arabian and of course persian music.
Binding the roots of every multistring instrument to ancient Greece is a common mistake. The very first Harp is called Adyrna and Turkic archers made it by converting a bow to an instrument. Actually all string instruments are derived from bow. Ancient examples are kyl kopuz & kopuz & adyrna. Adyrna developed to Altaic jetigen & Uyghur kalun. Then Farabi developed it and made the first Kanun. See his book: Kitab-ı Musiki.
And zithers... I think it came from santur. (I do not know whether it is Persian , Indian or Turkic.)
Ofcourse, Ottoman music was influenced by local cultures. However, it is based on Classical Turkish music. Turkish maqams, ousuls, rythyms and especially tone system are totaly unique.
Other literature maintains, that the Kanun wasn´t developed from the greek monochordos, but from the ancient egyptian harp. But I haven´t read at all that it was a turkic invention. I rather think that a high developed cuture like the mediterranian or oriental cultures (Egypt, Mesopotamia, Persia, Greece) are competent enought to develop istruments of such complexity.

Kanun is invented by Farabi, a Kazakh (Turkic) scientist and musicolog. So, it is a Turkic instrument.
Btw, Ottoman music was not a mixture. It totally depends on Classical Turkish Music.

the Kanun or Zither derives from the monochordos, an ancient instrument played in Greece. So it´s not an turkic instrument.
Ottoman music was influenced by local cultures.

Sorry, I didn´t want to bind it on ancient Greece, but on the ancient oriental and mediterranian world. I think we red different books.
Once I red, that the first harps had beed constructed in ca. 4000 b.C. in Mesopotamia, Persia and Egypt.
I´ve heard about the adyrna. Think it was kazach.
But I tell you what I red... You´re doin the same way. :)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
As a matter of fact, it originated in Mexico, where ancient Olmec peoples left stone statues of gods(?) playing a qanun-like instrument.
