obviously your plumming the depth and fishing from the rolling weight to the float, leaving the trace along the bottom right? sorry ive never really fished for pike or zander before and the lake i fish only allows for use of singles - so im soaking up as much info as possible :D
We use Catlink Kevlar, available online from Simon Clarke at Catfish Pro. It is an expensive material, about £12 for 20 meters or so but it is well worth it!
It allows you to completely sink the line between rod tip and float so that floating debris like leaves and twigs and all that dont get caught on the line, also when the flow increases (which happens intermittently on canals) when lock gates open, or boats approach then the float tends to hold station better in the current and remains fully cocked all the time rather than laying flat! Its better for the Zander if bites are spotted as soon as possible or the bait will be swallowed!!
so to claryfy is the bait off bottom or is the weight on the bottom and the bait also right on the bottom ?

Spot on with that mate, the trace along the deck and the ball lead just touching bottom!

what canal do you fish on?

I always use a single hook when float fishing with LIVES/DEADS hooked through the top lip.

It's surprising actually, I have never lost a fish that I've hooked on a single hook when predator fishing!

I use a similar rig when livebaiting for pike, but what's the advantage of fishing the float like a waggler rather than inline?

And also the float will collapse completely on the strike leaving you in direct contact with the fish!
