  • I read some time back that the MD11 requires that you initiate flare at 50' AGL. That might have accounted for the hard touchdown, because it looks like he was a bit lower than that.

  • @titanascar middle wheels are for weight distribution due to heavier weight of md-11 :) with no middle wheels, engineers have to redesign the original landing gear to make it stronger thus higer cost

  • @64h5dsf14j6s41h5s4j5 Yes, of course, LH Cargo's pilots and ATC from around the world are just wrong. FYI, LH Cargo's radio callsign = Lufthansa. Aerologic's radio callsign = German Cargo

    actually the ICAO Code for Lufthansa Cargo (GEC) originates from it's predecessor "German Cargo", but ATC callsign is "Lufthansa Cargo"

  • Is there an actual difference between the DC-10 and the MD-11 because they look exactly the same?

  • @DTl315 MD-11 is bigger and has winglets. Also on the cargo version it has smaller vertical stabilizers than the passenger MD 11 and the DC 10 has larger vert stabs as well. Larger wingspan than a DC 10 and a smaller tailplane and newer engines.

  • @DTl315 yes the MD-11 has wignlets the DC-10 doesnt the MD-11 is larger and skinnier the DC-10 is shorter and fatter and the tailplanes on the MD-11 are shorter than those of a DC-10s

  • I'm not 100% sure but I think I saw a Lufthansa MD11 heading into Manchester on 21st 22nd December 2011. I assume it was a MD11 as the wings were slightly further back on the fuselage and I think I saw a bit of the 3rd engine on the tail fin with the Lufthansa logo

  • Great vid!! and BTW, even though the crosswind wasn't that bad, it's clear that the pilot was fighting the wind on finals, and in this case a firm landing is called for. You start jerking around for a buttered landing and might find yourself either landing on the grass or having a wing pushed down before the other, it was the correct landing technique, and the big girl can totally take it.

  • @mick6269 No they didnt, they are MD-11, but on the other hand if the dc10 would still on production, should have winglets too, cause is like an update for the old aircrafts to reduce the turbulence on the wing, but the dc-10 production stop before this happen. (sorry for my bad english, im mexican) so if you see that things, the winglets and the landing gear at the center of the fuselage, then you can be sure that is a MD-11 ;)

  • Looks like home - I'm living near Airport Leipzig/Halle (LEJ). They have a base here, just like DHL. When they're landing on the southern runway, they're flying over our house. That's crazy and totaly loud.

  • @richnea2 The MD-11 is an upgraded model of the DC-10, which I believe was created in response to airlines wanting a plane that could carry a similar amount of passengers to the 747 but would use less fuel. Someone should clarify this, I'm not sure.

  • @22cibe LH Cargo being an arm of Lufthansa it's correct to call this Lufthansa. You'll notice that the titles during the video show Lufthansa Cargo MD-11F, as does the description and the tags & thus it's easy to conclude that the "cargo" omission was made from the title of the video to create a more concise video title.

  • Miracle he didn't break that plane. Touchdown was too hard, and a derotation and nosegear touchdown like that can actually buckle the fuselage. UPS had an MD land like that once and the total repair bill was over $10 million. Lufthansa should definitely send a memo out to pilots on how to put this bird on the ground safely. Other than that, nice video!

    Jeffry, I would love to see you talk to the pilot who landed and then have a discussion about this landing. You wouldn't stand a chance, since you don't seem to know anything about landing a plane safely, not to mention landing the MD11.

  • @mantyla1 I may not be a licensed MD pilot, but I DO know a thing or two about landing the MD-11. I see scores of UPS MD-11 landings every night, so I think I'm a pretty good judge of good and bad landings I've read articles and pilot notifications on how to properly handle the plane, as well as reviews and opinions of those who DO fly it. And I sure as hell can land the MD-11 on Flight Simulator. Beautifully I might add. I full well acknowledge the MD is VERY tricky to land properly.

  • @jeffry747 There are many variables involved in landing the MD11 properly, especially the cargo variant, landing weights between 150 tons and 220 tons, position of the CG, above average Vapp, gusty winds, different power settings associated with either a flaps 35 or flaps 50 etc. You as an outsider are in no position to judge only by the look of this landing that the company should put out a 'memo to the pilots on how to put this bird on the ground safely'. We already know, thanks.
