check out 'aztec' music, run by the drummer gil mathews....lets not forget that thorpie was the icing on a very fine cake!
i was at the gig at the myer music bowl which got the ålace vibrating like a tuning fork....i have also bought a great deal from aztec music and had them post it overseas to sweden and without stress or problem.
there is also a fine collection of the best of aussie rock...gil started with the absolute gems, aztecs 'live at sunbury' and 'more arse than class' now others, oz!
@LethalLee1959 Lobby Lloyd - in his earlier days was a much better player than thorpey. He had so much blues feel if you ever saw him live you would know. If you can get a copy of the 1st LP that Astecs released as a blues/rock band. It's great
Love this song, one of my favourites. Great to dance to. Been folllowing Billy since my early teens. Still play his music now, love you Billy, Lynne xxx
when I was fifteen around time of this vid, used to go to Electric Circus, club in Brisbane, see Billy, he would be on a stage only about 10 inches high, all the audience would sit on the floor and listen to Billy blast the hell out of the place, each song was like this, more of a jam really, would last for 8 - 10 mins, he looked just like this then...great memories
As far as I remember the Australian Govt. didn't ban any records.
It was the radio stations who arked up against the mainly British owned record companies who demanded extra payment or royalties for playing mostly British records on the radio. So the radio stations refused to play them for 6 months until the record companies came to their senses. This gave some local bands a chance to cover some of the British songs and to have hit records here in Oz in their own right.
@MRCLINTFLICK so god damn true... I remember the first time I saw this vid and it wasnt on here, not sure where?? but it stayed with me and when I played it for others.. they were blown away.
This song should be the showcase of australian rock... gutsy, rockin blues that has its feet firmly planted in Oz. if that song was better know it wouldve blown the american charts away...
Have a read of his books, like "Sex & Thugs & Rock'n'Roll". He lead a real rock'n'roll lifestyle. Am listen to some of his later stuff, like the "Tangiers" album. The man could play & sing it all.

Mate........I am so envious! I am about to turn 52 so I was too young (as far as my olds were concerned) to go to Sunbury. I have been searching the net for the last 15 years or so for Thorpie gigs in my area, but I was in Defence and kept moving around. I would have loved to have seen him in a pub type of atmosphere. There is noone more than Thorpie that I would have paid big money to see. Too late now!!!!! Thanks for the memories Billy.
@Badge290 He was the greatest I had the pleasure of having a drink with him at the Village green in 1971-72 I think and those days were the greatest as He never forgot me and always said hello I feel priveliged one of the all time grats
Tabs please, and the right ones, for you get easily fooled by the simplicity. (i have never seen anyone play Back in Black the way it should on the net, with the C# added on the A, exept for malcolm and Ang themselves)
On which album is this song (forgive me, but before i read the AC/DC book, i didn't knew this; poor me) i really have to play this live, otherwise i come back if i die.
Sorry Tonyp68, I was just a big fan of the music back in the day, I can't help you with the specifics. Now I used to live with ACDC in Melbourne when they first arrived there from Sydney, so I could give you a little insight there.
Angus now lives about 120 miles from my place with his wife.
And yes before i read the book, i had totally no insight in Australian rock music, but afterwards i find it really cool and pure compared to those US plastic sh*t.
Here in EU it always was a kind of rough, (lots of leather, studs, beer and macho behaviour) i guess because of our viking heritage. Aussies are more down to earth.
I'm not a dude, but that's Okay. I no longer live in Austarlia, moved to California in the late 70's, married the drummer from the Doobie Brothers, divorced, but still have to have my Aussie music fix. Funny thing, I was Angus's girlfriend for about a year, so if you ever have the chance to speak with him, tell him that Heather from Lansdowne Road, say Hey.
I'll send him a letter a.s.a.p., but i think they tour around now. Black Ice (yuk Ted Jensen!) tour is going on now.
I am an audio engineer (SAE) now, but was a meatcutter for 18 years. always have played the guitar, and one day got tired of the boss, and started a Rock'n'Roll future that still lasts on.
No problem. Always good to have "friends". ACDC had a roadie back in the 70's that used to work at the abattiors(probably spelt wrong), by the name of Pat Picket. He was a crazy f*****, but a lot of fun.
Loudest band! I may have been a very young kid when these guys were around, but they are legendary to the power behind them and that of Billy Thorpes voice. My HERO to this day!
I still feel and tripping like I saw them in Arcata Co-op and the Hemp festival Humboldt county, California few years ago. Their sounds never get old.
Billy thorpe resembles me in some ways, i kinda admire that since i only seen his music clip of this particular song 1 and a half years ago... it still blows me away.. Wooooooooooooo!1
The music today is rehashed crap and done in the studio to death. No live music anymore. All from a fishbowl called a studio. Billy Thorpe was the real deal.
That is very interesting. I think what has happened is that we were warned long ago, that pop/rock will itself and it seems that point has been reached. Must be very frustrating not to experience the excitement that went down for us. The Tube manages to bring a lot of it alive. This particular media has brought an interesting perspective to music now. A lot of kids including mine are just going for what went down in the past. Normal media would never play this sort of music! Cheers!
I agree with Nitrovo I'm 26 and I love old music I can't stand the modern shit that's being produced now, it has no soul, no heart and no meaning its all a filthy money making machine. It seems everyone who is in music these days is in it for fame and glory / money, not because they wanna rock and stick it to the man and change the world and above all make great fucking music.
I could go on all night, living in Ireland for the past year has made me miss Australia and old Aussie rock even more.
Yes, right now reminds of what it felt like just before punk hit the world. Mainstream commercial media was just bloody awful, then punk came like a breath of fresh air. But, now it is even worse. At least just before punk in Aussie we had 2 Double Jay and also stuff like Thorpe and Buffalo. The Saints were bubbling away, but it wasn't until 77 before we heard of the Saints.
Hey Ninyae1, AC/DC made a slight contribution to Oz rock starting about 74 :) not forgetting Spectrum, Daddy Cool, Company Caine, Masters Apprentices etc, and Zoot did a pretty good version of Eleanor Rigby too, oh, I forgot Tamum Shud and RadioBirdman, punk didn't really get airplay till '78 '79, oh, forgot Split Enz, Sky Hooks, Misex etc, all that lot kept us going from late 60's to the 80's. Aussie has always been pretty spoiled for choice really ;), eh, Chain, and of course, Rolf Harris lol
Comment on Toowomba audiences circa late 60s.Concerts were an excuse for country lads to get pissed and terrorise the band: the singer looked at my so-called girlfriend: thump. The Twilights played the garden city. Things didnt go well. Tinnies and other refuse hit the stage. Eventually the band retreated and compared notes. Brian Cadd smirked. The only member to get out unscathed. Was told to go look in his organ speaker and found a dead rabbit..
I played in a band in the 70's and supported Billy at the Toowoomba Showgrounds along with other local bands at the time. On the way back to Brisbane we stopped at a roadhouse and there was Billy buying some burgers. He was such a friendly honest guy always smiling and always happy to give advice to other musos. I'm now in my 50's and have just watched this and had tears running down my face. Abolutely f%%cking awesome!!!!!! He's still alive to me
GTK was great. 6.25 each night on ABC..crap b/w on legs...no pumping speakers in those days.
Saw this version of Thorpie many times at QU and Festival.....why didnt my hair grow faster. Cant remember this track, but what do they say about the 60s/70s. As a side bar, Jerry Humphries joined the band for a few songs, and we were delerious. Oz rock, mightily underrated. Billy came from Cooparoo I believe. Makes my morning. Love. Peace
I don't know if its a marshall (looks like an obscure australian amp that was one of many at that time) but damn does he get a thick treble tone outta that thing. Amazing.
I'm very sure that at that time Billy used a locally made Strauss stack made by Nova Sound in Melbourne. They were one of the main manufacturers of PAs and guitar amps in Australia in the early 70s that were used in major rock productions.
Billy Thorpe was the loudest and most rocking of bands in Australia. In 1970 he blew Deep Purple off stage who were then the loudest in the world. He is and was the best..
Anyone who ever saw Billy live never forgot it, he was an amazing performer.
RIP Billy a year ago tomorrow. We miss ya Billy and we always will.
I think it was on "The Hoax Is Over". Saw Mama performed in Melbourne and Canberra in '71 & '72 several times - it was simply awsome!espacially gigs at LA Trobe Uni Students Union. The rumour at the time The Aztecs played this on the ABC's "GTK" show - (Get to Know)the performance was conditional on being allowed to play live with no interview or introduction from host Molly Meldrum. interesting to hear Molly's side of the story.
The consummate live performance, and flawless. Passion, dynamics, energy, emotion, drive...MUSIC doesn't get any better than this, and it's totally LIVE folks, no protools or overdubs - just real musicians who have honed their craft over many a gig lead by legendary vocalist/guitarist/songwriter BILLY THORPE.
This is so good - I've seen it on Rage a couple of times. Does anyone know when it was performed? It is comparable to anything by any artist of the era ... from anywhere.
Oz music owes a lot to Thorpie. Vale. Thanks so much for posting. Jimbo
A lead guitar, a stack of Marshals turned up LOUD, and Billy belting out Mama!!! Takes me back 35 years to my long lost youth trailing Thorpie from pub to Sunbury. What great nights they were..... loud and thumpin, piss n chics, aw hell, if only we could go back!. R.I.P. Thorpie, there'll never be another like you.
Classic early 70's Australlian Hardrock Hell make The Aztecs as well known as Buffalo, Lobby Loyd & Coloured Balls, Kahvas Jute or biggies Masters Apprentices or Akka/dakka! Thorpie rocks on!

Using comparisons between today's "life-a-second" runner-up society and OUR life of yesteryear; Billy Thorpe would have set the World on fire!
He was the devil in disguise back then . . . this was 40-odd years ago & Billy blew the fuckin' roof off man!
If Billy were alive now, he'd kill 'em - instead, the air-waves are full of "life-a-second runner-up losers !!!!!!!!!!!!

The music today is rehashed crap and done in the studio to death. No live music anymore. All from a fishbowl called a studio. Billy Thorpe was the real deal.
torpedodropkick 3 years ago
I agree, but then every generation always thinks the music of their youth is the greatest!
Ninyae1 3 years ago
I'm 19 and I think it's complete shit.
I was born in the wrong era.
I'd love to have been around for all these awesome gigs and bands.
The best i've got is Dave Tice and Mark Evans playing at the Sando every week! Great way to spend an afternoon.

Cheers!
Ninyae1 3 years ago 2

Ninyae1 3 years ago 2

Love. Peace

Beautiful to the ears! Gibson through Mashall, no pedals. Love this!
Thanks Billy! If this was the only song you ever did, it would have been more than enough!

I don't know if its a marshall (looks like an obscure australian amp that was one of many at that time) but damn does he get a thick treble tone outta that thing. Amazing.
AcrossTheTen 3 years ago
Your Right! Good eyes! Its not a Mashall sure is overdriver via volume ala natural!
Thriplebuttix 3 years ago

Can anybody tell me which record this was off?
What a fucking jam!!
9fifty5 4 years ago

RIP Billy, keeping your memory alive.

Great comment and totally agree. BT and band were unreal and can't be copied. He was a legend before RIP. He will always remain the same.
