  • wow this mother fukka can sing, shit

  • Absolutely awesome.

  • Wow, I always like Children Of The Sun lp and really, for years, I had no clue this guy was like Ronnie James Dio and been playing music this long. Playing different genres of music can be difficult..I give much respect to Billy and I always have then...A friend gave me this album years ago, moons actually.lol...Glad I searched...Thought of him just out of the blue...Thanks Billy! RIP

  • does anyone know what amps billy's using?..is it vase?

  • @omly85 Could be a Strauss. Sounds like one. Billy was known to use 'em, too.

  • During my angst driven teenage years Billy showed me the way to evolve through Sex & Drugs & Hard Rock - thank you Billy !

Billy Thorpe had more balls than a billiard table-& his energy & attitude on stage was phenomenal !

How cool (and a thing unknown now) for a band to do a 10 minute song & have it on air (thanks GTK)

Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs= Legend

  • check out 'aztec' music, run by the drummer gil mathews....lets not forget that thorpie was the icing on a very fine cake!

i was at the gig at the myer music bowl which got the ålace vibrating like a tuning fork....i have also bought a great deal from aztec music and had them post it overseas to sweden and without stress or problem.

there is also a fine collection of the best of aussie rock...gil started with the absolute gems, aztecs 'live at sunbury' and 'more arse than class' now others, oz!

  • Why on earth did Billy need Lobby Lloyde when is as good if not better guitarist?

  • @LethalLee1959 Lobby Lloyd - in his earlier days was a much better player than thorpey. He had so much blues feel if you ever saw him live you would know. If you can get a copy of the 1st LP that Astecs released as a blues/rock band. It's great

  • you guys think its safe to consider this early 70's aussie stoner rock ? hehe fucken amizing sound billy had some sweet chops

  • Billy was 1 hard arse rocker with the Sunbury Aztecs. Long live Aztec Energy!!!!!!!

  • NEANDERTHAL EYEBROWS AND BEARDS, HAVE A NICE DAY T-SHIRTS,

SABBATHY GUITARS, BELLBOTTOMS, STAINLESS STEEL MICS... THIS WAS THE PERIOD OF TRUE GENUINE HARD ROCK!!!

  • Love this song, one of my favourites. Great to dance to. Been folllowing Billy since my early teens. Still play his music now, love you Billy, Lynne xxx

  • This is Billy doing what Billy always did best..... being Billy. Larger than life and fkn awesome.

  • when I was fifteen around time of this vid, used to go to Electric Circus, club in Brisbane, see Billy, he would be on a stage only about 10 inches high, all the audience would sit on the floor and listen to Billy blast the hell out of the place, each song was like this, more of a jam really, would last for 8 - 10 mins, he looked just like this then...great memories

  • 'Still stunning! :-}

  • Billys kicks some serious ass in this. Can feel the hair raising my neck!

Man this can never date, this is a priceless clip.

  • The youngsters of the iPod generation don't know what they are missing with ample Marshall stacks to pump out real music!

  • Using comparisons between today's "life-a-second" runner-up society and OUR life of yesteryear; Billy Thorpe would have set the World on fire!

He was the devil in disguise back then . . . this was 40-odd years ago & Billy blew the fuckin' roof off man!

If Billy were alive now, he'd kill 'em - instead, the air-waves are full of "life-a-second runner-up losers !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @MRCLINTFLICK

This music was in a period when government Australian Radio stations were only allowed to play Australian bands.

It was a golden age for Aussie bands.

  • @MichaelKingsfordGray

As far as I remember the Australian Govt. didn't ban any records.

It was the radio stations who arked up against the mainly British owned record companies who demanded extra payment or royalties for playing mostly British records on the radio. So the radio stations refused to play them for 6 months until the record companies came to their senses. This gave some local bands a chance to cover some of the British songs and to have hit records here in Oz in their own right.

  • @MRCLINTFLICK so god damn true... I remember the first time I saw this vid and it wasnt on here, not sure where?? but it stayed with me and when I played it for others.. they were blown away.

This song should be the showcase of australian rock... gutsy, rockin blues that has its feet firmly planted in Oz. if that song was better know it wouldve blown the american charts away...

RIP Billy, you were my idol

  • I wonder if Danzig's song Mother is paying royalties to Thorpe for Mama?

  • He rocks so hard he rules planets, all the while looking totally like a stoner Citizen Kane..

  • The Boggo Road Jail DVD is brilliant! This guy was one talented dude!! Grab a copy and watch it if you can you won't be dissappointed!!

  • There is a DVD Billie Thorpe & the Aztecs live at Boggo Road Jail that captures him him really rocking.

  • holy hand of f..k, just read about this guy , brilliant

  • love this track. makes me think i was born 20 years too late. rip bill

  • i am 26 and i find this a song that always fefines my mood when i am on the piss 30 years after it was written. rip billy

  • if iam not mistakin thats amp is australian made!

  • Have a read of his books, like "Sex & Thugs & Rock'n'Roll". He lead a real rock'n'roll lifestyle. Am listen to some of his later stuff, like the "Tangiers" album. The man could play & sing it all.

  • damn that dude has a voice

  • the man was a God!!

  • This is and still remains.....the best nine minutes of my life!

Suck this dick, ya Biebers and ya try-hard fucking wankers!

For this is how you ROCK N FUCKING ROLL!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you Billy- for guiding me thru my teenage years-with sex & drugs & HEAVY Rock & Roll !

Larger than life, even your funeral was a sell-out concert, and a deserving tribute to the amazing performance energy that made you an Aussie icon. You may have left us, but you left us with memories and feelings which can never be forgotten- & I for one am eternally grateful for the experience ! Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs - best live band to grace this lucky country !

  • Raw power! Now I see why The Aztecs were "in" in the 70-ies and AC/DC were impressed by their power...

  • Damn Good there Mate, and thank you Ausie 'Nam vets for helping us, the only Country that really did so....

  • Wow!..This is Great Old Rock...Aussie Rock!....I love that Voice:-)

  • this is great !!! loved it !!! thanks for sending it my friend !!

na ise kala panda file mou !!!!

    chris

  • Billy left us too soon, but at least with these Youtube videos, we can still enjoy the good times.

  • Thorpie you rocked our sox off for years, my kids went to the same high school as you, they've never forgotten you there. RIP x

  • love the smiley t the drummer is wearing 25 years before the age of e!

  • He can out sing, play, fuck, rack n' rock, drink, write and perform live without the help of a PC all these modern musos under any table. AMEN!

  • Raw! Real! See you soon Billy.

  • I first saw this early one morning on RAGE, about 20 years ago. I just finished reading 'Thorpies Time On Earth' fanstic!!!

RIP legend, The best in Australia

  • its only rockandroll and i like it. daaamn, LOVE IT!!!

  • they were the loudest band i ever heard..one night at La trobe uni it was incredible..one of 5 best australian bands..thorpie was the real deal

  • This was so loud little screws were vibrating and falling off my camera (I had the close ups on Billy right side looking left)

  • way before his time

  • definitely great.

  • he was a great legend and we have another one ....his friend Jimmy Barnes who is still with us....those 2 are giants of australian rock

  • Jeeeezus that was good!

My friends, blues rock does not get any better than this.

The section where he's playing the low notes without a pick, just hamering on the fretboard, is freaking amazing!

  • Thorpey always seemed 'tryhard' to me, but fuck that vid was good.

  • i love theses guys i love the coloured balls i love rose tatoo and AC/DC are my heroes

  • Loudest, Purest, Aussie Rock that ever was, Thorpies voice has no comparrison, I was only a kid when he made the biggest inflyuence!

  • i saw thorpe about 8-9 yrs ago, and in a small venue for his standard, he rocked the fuck out the joint and was so fucken loud. he was brilliant and it was the best to see him rockin out

  • Mate........I am so envious! I am about to turn 52 so I was too young (as far as my olds were concerned) to go to Sunbury. I have been searching the net for the last 15 years or so for Thorpie gigs in my area, but I was in Defence and kept moving around. I would have loved to have seen him in a pub type of atmosphere. There is noone more than Thorpie that I would have paid big money to see. Too late now!!!!! Thanks for the memories Billy.

  • @Badge290 He was the greatest I had the pleasure of having a drink with him at the Village green in 1971-72 I think and those days were the greatest as He never forgot me and always said hello I feel priveliged one of the all time grats

  • ALRIGHT!

  • braviiiiiiiiiii..................good ser!

  • That's the way i want my Rock'n'Roll!!!

Tabs please, and the right ones, for you get easily fooled by the simplicity. (i have never seen anyone play Back in Black the way it should on the net, with the C# added on the A, exept for malcolm and Ang themselves)

On which album is this song (forgive me, but before i read the AC/DC book, i didn't knew this; poor me) i really have to play this live, otherwise i come back if i die.

  • Pure Aussie rock is a gift to the spirit.

  • ut i still have no Tabs, or lyrics, and on what album can i find it?

  • Sorry Tonyp68, I was just a big fan of the music back in the day, I can't help you with the specifics. Now I used to live with ACDC in Melbourne when they first arrived there from Sydney, so I could give you a little insight there.

  • Freaking cool dude!

Angus now lives about 120 miles from my place with his wife.

And yes before i read the book, i had totally no insight in Australian rock music, but afterwards i find it really cool and pure compared to those US plastic sh*t.

Here in EU it always was a kind of rough, (lots of leather, studs, beer and macho behaviour) i guess because of our viking heritage. Aussies are more down to earth.

  • I'm not a dude, but that's Okay. I no longer live in Austarlia, moved to California in the late 70's, married the drummer from the Doobie Brothers, divorced, but still have to have my Aussie music fix. Funny thing, I was Angus's girlfriend for about a year, so if you ever have the chance to speak with him, tell him that Heather from Lansdowne Road, say Hey.

  • a Rock'n' Roll baby!

I'll send him a letter a.s.a.p., but i think they tour around now. Black Ice (yuk Ted Jensen!) tour is going on now.

I am an audio engineer (SAE) now, but was a meatcutter for 18 years. always have played the guitar, and one day got tired of the boss, and started a Rock'n'Roll future that still lasts on.

    Lets stay hooked. grtz me

  • No problem. Always good to have "friends". ACDC had a roadie back in the 70's that used to work at the abattiors(probably spelt wrong), by the name of Pat Picket. He was a crazy f*****, but a lot of fun.

  • Billy Thorpe was remarkable and sad that the world was not able to witness him and the Aztecs in their later years.

They were the best,by far, the best rock band in Aust at that time.

  • Love the Music - it will not die Thanks Billy .

  • Mama was a driving force in Billy's life.

Watch and read everything you can about this man.

One of the true Rock Legends ;)

  • this is REAL music.. legendary

  • nobody plays better than billy no one.......

  • Angus Young???

  • this show GTK was on at 6-30 pm mondays if my memory serves me well,, fuck !!could you imagine this on television at all these days

  • "Max Merrit" from the Meteors - wrote the

song 'Slipping Away' which became a huge hit for him - about Billy Thorpe - who

    'stole Max's girlfriend from him'.

"Baby I've been watching you,...watching everything you do'...

  • Loudest band! I may have been a very young kid when these guys were around, but they are legendary to the power behind them and that of Billy Thorpes voice. My HERO to this day!

  • Awesome song and Hard Hitting too.Long live billly Thorpe.

  • another one of those bands pushing the limits of potential but shaded from the main mass of light.

  • Poor Billy diead in 2007 him and Bon Scott where firends.

  • that was fucking awesome!! ive never heard that somg till now and im blown away! im going out tomorow and buying all the albums! billy is god

  • Awesome song and first time i saw it was on Rage late one night.Rocks.

  • Imagine how loud this would have been in studio?

  • I still feel and tripping like I saw them in Arcata Co-op and the Hemp festival Humboldt county, California few years ago. Their sounds never get old.

  • stunning passion

    RIP Billy :-(

  • These guys rock their asses off.

  • This is great stuff! Never heard it before and dig it immediately & completely. 5*!

  • Fuckin' amazing!!!!!!!!

  • @toecutterr6 agree in full

  • Billy to was the true king of Australian rock was the best

  • Impresionante. Bravo bravisimo!!!

  • Billy Thorpe was an icon in Australian rock music.

  • Before my time, but that is a fucking awesome riff.

Sounds like old Motorhead, except Billy can sing a shit load better than Lemmy

  • So cool!!!! anyone got the tabs??????

  • man..what a voice!!!!

  • Billy thorpe resembles me in some ways, i kinda admire that since i only seen his music clip of this particular song 1 and a half years ago... it still blows me away.. Wooooooooooooo!1

  • I don't know any of those people. Did they play at Sunbury?

  • You're kidding... Sunbury would not have been Sunbury without Billy Thorpe, Lobby Loyd etc etc

  • eirrac54

We get so much crap here and apparently from Antartica, which is bullshit. Some of these need to get a real life and be real.

  • TABS!?

  • i never really listened to billy thorpe's music, but this song kicks arse

sounds a bit like black sabbath (but with better singing)

  • Spot on!

  • The music today is rehashed crap and done in the studio to death. No live music anymore. All from a fishbowl called a studio. Billy Thorpe was the real deal.

  • I agree, but then every generation always thinks the music of their youth is the greatest!

  • I'm 19 and I think it's complete shit.

I was born in the wrong era.

I'd love to have been around for all these awesome gigs and bands.

The best i've got is Dave Tice and Mark Evans playing at the Sando every week! Great way to spend an afternoon.

  • That is very interesting. I think what has happened is that we were warned long ago, that pop/rock will itself and it seems that point has been reached. Must be very frustrating not to experience the excitement that went down for us. The Tube manages to bring a lot of it alive. This particular media has brought an interesting perspective to music now. A lot of kids including mine are just going for what went down in the past. Normal media would never play this sort of music! Cheers!

  • I agree with Nitrovo I'm 26 and I love old music I can't stand the modern shit that's being produced now, it has no soul, no heart and no meaning its all a filthy money making machine. It seems everyone who is in music these days is in it for fame and glory / money, not because they wanna rock and stick it to the man and change the world and above all make great fucking music.

I could go on all night, living in Ireland for the past year has made me miss Australia and old Aussie rock even more.

  • Yes, right now reminds of what it felt like just before punk hit the world. Mainstream commercial media was just bloody awful, then punk came like a breath of fresh air. But, now it is even worse. At least just before punk in Aussie we had 2 Double Jay and also stuff like Thorpe and Buffalo. The Saints were bubbling away, but it wasn't until 77 before we heard of the Saints.

  • Hey Ninyae1, AC/DC made a slight contribution to Oz rock starting about 74 :) not forgetting Spectrum, Daddy Cool, Company Caine, Masters Apprentices etc, and Zoot did a pretty good version of Eleanor Rigby too, oh, I forgot Tamum Shud and RadioBirdman, punk didn't really get airplay till '78 '79, oh, forgot Split Enz, Sky Hooks, Misex etc, all that lot kept us going from late 60's to the 80's. Aussie has always been pretty spoiled for choice really ;), eh, Chain, and of course, Rolf Harris lol

  • thats cuz this is shit

  • Comment removed

  • That wall of noise is amazing.

  • R.I.P. Billy. Australia loves ya.

  • Geez mate, he's missed

  • F*cking Hell! Billy's problem was he was just never loud enough....

  • Spot on mate

  • Superb. This is what Rock and Roll is. Nothing else but this.

  • Comment on Toowomba audiences circa late 60s.Concerts were an excuse for country lads to get pissed and terrorise the band: the singer looked at my so-called girlfriend: thump. The Twilights played the garden city. Things didnt go well. Tinnies and other refuse hit the stage. Eventually the band retreated and compared notes. Brian Cadd smirked. The only member to get out unscathed. Was told to go look in his organ speaker and found a dead rabbit..

  • I played in a band in the 70's and supported Billy at the Toowoomba Showgrounds along with other local bands at the time. On the way back to Brisbane we stopped at a roadhouse and there was Billy buying some burgers. He was such a friendly honest guy always smiling and always happy to give advice to other musos. I'm now in my 50's and have just watched this and had tears running down my face. Abolutely f%%cking awesome!!!!!! He's still alive to me

  • GTK was great. 6.25 each night on ABC..crap b/w on legs...no pumping speakers in those days.

Saw this version of Thorpie many times at QU and Festival.....why didnt my hair grow faster. Cant remember this track, but what do they say about the 60s/70s. As a side bar, Jerry Humphries joined the band for a few songs, and we were delerious. Oz rock, mightily underrated. Billy came from Cooparoo I believe. Makes my morning. Love. Peace

  • Beautiful to the ears! Gibson through Mashall, no pedals. Love this!

Thanks Billy! If this was the only song you ever did, it would have been more than enough!

  • I don't know if its a marshall (looks like an obscure australian amp that was one of many at that time) but damn does he get a thick treble tone outta that thing. Amazing.

  • Your Right! Good eyes! Its not a Mashall sure is overdriver via volume ala natural!

  • I'm very sure that at that time Billy used a locally made Strauss stack made by Nova Sound in Melbourne. They were one of the main manufacturers of PAs and guitar amps in Australia in the early 70s that were used in major rock productions.

  • i alawys show this to mates on a boozy Saturday night. Never ceases to drop jaws. It's teh shit, Thorpie rocks!!!!

  • haha I do the same, I love this song.

  • Awesome shit! Never heard of them either. Rocks hard as fuck though.

  • Billy Thorpe was the loudest and most rocking of bands in Australia. In 1970 he blew Deep Purple off stage who were then the loudest in the world. He is and was the best..

Anyone who ever saw Billy live never forgot it, he was an amazing performer.

RIP Billy a year ago tomorrow. We miss ya Billy and we always will.

  • I want to conceive a child with the girl I am in love with to this song

  • Hell Yeah! My kind of blues. Never heard of this guy before now

  • amen

  • Never heard this before,it's kick ass!! where can I get their album??

  • I know this song is on his 1972 Live In Sunbury album.

  • Oh yeah!

    Saludos a nuestros amigos Aussies!

  • This is classic hard aussie rock. Good stuff Billy and the Aztecs.

  • Can anybody tell me which record this was off?

    What a fucking jam!!

  • I think it was on "The Hoax Is Over". Saw Mama performed in Melbourne and Canberra in '71 & '72 several times - it was simply awsome!espacially gigs at LA Trobe Uni Students Union. The rumour at the time The Aztecs played this on the ABC's "GTK" show - (Get to Know)the performance was conditional on being allowed to play live with no interview or introduction from host Molly Meldrum. interesting to hear Molly's side of the story.

  • I've heard them live. Man they were loud. Ya gotta love the man's intensity.

  • Does anybody know what studio album this was originally recorded on?

  • This is f*cking fantastic, no wah pedal or overdubbing, live straight forward, mad master skills. brilliant

  • shit! ive never heard this. hard fuckn riff

  • The consummate live performance, and flawless. Passion, dynamics, energy, emotion, drive...MUSIC doesn't get any better than this, and it's totally LIVE folks, no protools or overdubs - just real musicians who have honed their craft over many a gig lead by legendary vocalist/guitarist/songwriter BILLY THORPE.

RIP Billy, keeping your memory alive.

  • Great comment and totally agree. BT and band were unreal and can't be copied. He was a legend before RIP. He will always remain the same.

  • This is so good - I've seen it on Rage a couple of times. Does anyone know when it was performed? It is comparable to anything by any artist of the era ... from anywhere.

Oz music owes a lot to Thorpie. Vale. Thanks so much for posting. Jimbo

  • brilliant, just amazing

    RIP billy

  • mama.. that's some psych!

  • Holy S@#T... wow

  • THIS is what GOOD ROCK 'N ROLL is all about!!!!!!!

  • Don't make anything like they used to!

    R.I.P. Billy

  • This is classic Aussie pub rock,Long Live Billy, and those that followed.

  • What a kick ass fuckin' tune!!!

  • A lead guitar, a stack of Marshals turned up LOUD, and Billy belting out Mama!!! Takes me back 35 years to my long lost youth trailing Thorpie from pub to Sunbury. What great nights they were..... loud and thumpin, piss n chics, aw hell, if only we could go back!. R.I.P. Thorpie, there'll never be another like you.

  • Heavy and beautiful!

  • Whoa!

  • Power. Respect. Thorpie.

  • I posted some vid's of Thorpie on my Blog for download

    see video description for URL

  • i'M TOTALLY ADICTED TO THIS VIDEO, I JAM IT MYSELF ASWELL

    THORPIE IS GOD!

  • gtk the best should bring it back.billy gangster of love any vids anyone

  • eres el mejor billy.

  • Classic early 70's Australlian Hardrock Hell make The Aztecs as well known as Buffalo, Lobby Loyd & Coloured Balls, Kahvas Jute or biggies Masters Apprentices or Akka/dakka! Thorpie rocks on!

  • Poder Azteca! A powerful song, good oldie. Bien pacheco ese!

  • dead set legend

  • the ultimate in feel......

  • Jesus!!! that was cool

  • The best of the best. A master vocalist and master guitarist that none will ever come close to

  • yes Wolfmother owe a lot here.

  • Bad and fuckin loud,no one will ever be this good again

  • Billy Thorpe will live forever unless you sir or madam are of a disinchanted youth, and i only turned 22 on jan 20 '07, people live the CLASSICS

  • Read my post "AGAIN" junior, and if your "disenchanted youth" comment is not in reply to me, then please ignore.
