  • While that is very cool, it is not safe for the people NOR the animals to be that close to them! Next time maintain your space and stop your engine. Those animals are very sensitive to sounds, just as dolphins. Excess noise impairs their ability to hunt and feed.

    Thanks for posting!

  • @ReddogAJ - you are a dumb ass...read the articles before you respond!

  • @marlinmccune I'm not sure what "articles" you are talking about, but it's definitely not safe for the people or animals to be that close.

  • @marlinmccune Also, there is not need for the harsh words.

  • I think its awesome. I love orcas. Im wanting to go on an Alaskan cruise to go whale watching.

  • Judging from the size of the pod, these guys are fish eaters, not mammal eaters. Transients tend to travel in pods with 2 to 6 mdmbers.

  • @PyramidheadFreak These were actually eating pilot whales...

  • I know Orcas swim in all oceans, but I didn't think they would swim in waters that warm. How warm was the water?

  • @HarryButtox91 The water was probably about 80 degrees...there are a few resident pods inn the Gulf and some transient ones too!

  • That's really neat. But strange. Orcas (killer whales) usually stay in colder water such as Alaskan and Antarctica waiters. They arentt fond of the warmer temp in gulf or Atlantic water

  • @productofyou89 Yes...They are found in the Gulf...do some research...I’m working with a number of scientists on this sighting too! If you decide to find more about about the subject I'd be glad to entertain your comments!

  • That's so cool!! Who would've thought whales off the Texas coast. But don't they need really deep water? How deep was the water? 400, 600, 800 feet?

  • I was in about 3,000 foot of water at the time about 80 miles offshore of Port Aransas...it was pretty cool!

  • @jm5390 The water was about 3,250'

  • The water was about 3,250'

  • I believe the poster when he says the whales were following them. Whales are very playful and curious creatures, they will come right up to a boat/ship which is one reason why there are so many that are hit and killed by ships along with dolphins.

  • @DiamondsGlow87 Thanks for the reply!

  • @DiamondsGlow87 Thanks for the reply!

  • wow amazing! so lucky!

  • @FxUCKTHEWORLD Thanks!

  • should be common decency to leave these creatures alone

  • Those whales were following us you dumb shit!

  • I’m tired of foreign dumbasses that live in a country that has absolutely no decency for ocean life commenting like they are Green Peace! You stupid lost idiot the whales were following us!

  • should be common decency to stay away from mthese creatures

aint we fucked with them enuff?

  • Your spelling and lack English language shows that you are a stupid socialistic liberal...what right do you have to judge anyone when your country rapes their ocean and ours!

  • @marlinmccune - I'm a socially liberal Texan - yes I know I'm rare. I appreciate your video and understand that you weren't hurting the whales, in fact you were probably the ones in danger. It looks like you had a great adventure. The more people who can get in touch with nature the more who will understand that we need to coexist not dominate.

  • dude im gonna be chillin on the beach gettin my bronze on and one of them things is gonna beach itself and eat me iv seen it on NATGEO!

  • Watchout! Hint: Don't wear a seal outfit! LOL!

  • They say that there are Orcas in all the worlds oceans. You just proved that they are in the gulf also. Awesome ! You came upon a good size pod, a lot of youngsters. Were they more grey behind the dorsal fins ? Transient pods tend to be more grey and, residents tend to be darker in color. Beautiful footage.

  • Thanks for the comments!

  • No matter who you are, seeing whales in the wild is just an incredible experience. What more reason do we need to protect them? Thanks for sharing your excitement!

  • You're Welcome!

    Capt. Scott McCune

  • Anytime! It was awsome to see!

  • Cool, I had no idea we had killer whales off a Texas coast.

  • It was a surprise to me too!

    Scott

  • My husband and I have traveled to Alaska and the PNW to see what we could have seen just off the coast at home?? Though think this experience was incredibly rare otherwise we would hear more about Orca in the Gulf. Thanks for posting - these are the most amazing creatures and I am just itching to get back to where I can experience them in the wild again. By my calculations, you would have been off the coast around Matagorda??

  • Well we left port from and came back to Port Aransas, TX...we were in range of Galveston to Port Aransas...They are incredible to see in the wild!

    Scott

  • That trip was made boy, regardless if they catch any fish or not.. WOW !

  • But fortunately we caught fish too!

    Scott

  • Great video. It looks like they were following the boat to play/show off.

  • They were...it was terrific!

    Scott

  • Magnifico! Thnx muchissimo! Let's hope man stops hunting them and using them for Amusement :-}

  • There is nothing wrong with using them for watching and amusment!

  • Man used to ride bulls chasing and bothering killer whales.LOL. To tree huggers you must be the anti Christ..LOL.. I never read all these comments wish I would of before now.. I am still rolling.. Some people are so dumb..

  • I know...FUNNY!

    Scott

  • man your real lucky the only time ive seen an orca is at seaWorld in San Antonio but you got to see tem in the wild and the fact that they were in the gulf is amazing thanks for sharing your video

  • WTF!!!!!! orcas in the gulf, here in texas?!?! this is awesome, nice footage, not a very common sight @_@

  • Hmmm, 80 NM east of Port Aransas, I guess that means these are off of Louisiana...

  • HaHa! nope the Texas Coast is huge and curves...80NM is almost the middle of the Texas offshore grounds...about 150 NM to the NW is the Louisiana side of the Gulf...

  • Great Video!

  • Thanks!

  • My 6 yr old daughter wants to study killer whales. Thank you for your amazing video. It is great to see them in the wild!

  • Thanks for the reply! I'm glad it was of use!

    Scott

  • However, marlinmccune, if the whales were no longer under your boat at some point, then you probably should have backed away and given them some space. Even if you accidently encountered them on a fishing trip. If moving the boat won't cause possible harm to the orca, then it needs to be done.

  • So, it's actually much, much safer to swim with a wild orca than it is captive.

  • Also, on the subject of swimming with these animal, it's safer to swim with a wild orca than a captive one. So far, there has only been one recorded wild orca attack on a human. A surfer was paddling out to sea and a transient(a mammal-eating orca.) mistakened him for a seal from below. The whale grabbed his leg, but then let go instantly when he realized the man was not a seal. The surfer only suffered minor injuries. There have been well over 10 orca attacks in captivity.

  • i survived ike my ass you know you ran

  • Beautiful video, I live in Galveston and survived Ike. I think that since Ike the water is cleaner, clearer and it looks deeper. The level of the high water mark on the groins is now beneath the tides...um, the water comes over the groins more than before and the sand bars have changed.

  • Yes I believe there is some good that comes from a big hurricane...too bad it takes something that strong to clean out the bay system! I'm glad you made it through the storm!

    Scott

  • Beautiful video I have seen close encounters like this its once in a lifetime.I hope to see more like this thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for the note!

    Scott

  • I'm sure you recorded the GPS reading, nice video! Once in a lifetime.

  • Well the pod moves around a lot so the GPS numbers arent all that important but it was a spectacular event to witness!

    Thanks!

    Scott

  • I actually work with a conservation group as a Marine Educator regarding threatened and endangered species, including killer whales. A typo is merely a typo, but seeing as your comments are primarily geared to degrade me vs. something more constructive, ie. educate the public on killer whales, I will choose to exit this forum. Please excuse the run on sentence!

  • Thank you for exiting the forum!

If you had taken the time to read a few other comments you would have seen that the Director of Gulf Resource Network and my former boss had made nice comments and the GRN with my permission used the video for a major promotion regarding the vast resources in the Gulf and solidifying the vote for the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act!

  • This video was posted to supply enjoyment for people who do not get on the water and see such rare sites, this was the first VIDEO of Killer Whales in the Gulf! I did not post it to get accosted by radical conservationists!

  • Now if you would like to change your attitude I would be glad to entertain you!

    Capt. Scott McCune

  • IN response to being called and idiot by marlinmccune...I do actually have a clue...I work closely with fisheries to monitor the vessel activity around killer whales...if you were well read you would have already known that there are be whale wise guidelines that were established by scientists. They found that when a boat was within 100m of the whales the whales changed their behaviour. Scientists have also determined that resident whales share fish at the surface, another reason not to bug them!

  • I work with and was employed by conservation organizations. If you were well read you would have known that conservation organizations have used my video in campaigns promoting Gulf resources, in addition to that you would be able to produce replies that are complete sentences and have no typos! Our 45 fishing yacht dose not create the sonic ambiences that Navy ships and such create.

  • Whales are also capable of doing twice the speed of my fishing vessel. As stated before these Whales saw the boat from a long distance and were curious, there were no bait fish around, we had not caught a fish all day nor had we seen any bait activity. When we were about 20NM inshore of the Whale pod we started catching fish Mahi-Mahi and Ono! A LOT of people have enjoyed and have been enlightened by this video! You are still an idiot! LEAVE ME ALONE!

  • @taipanbay Are these the same scientists that said there were no killer whales in the gulf? The same scientists that said those that think they saw killer whales in the gulf actually saw pilot whales?

  • @weninjason Why the hell do you even bother to post a stupid comment like this...the scientists invovled are the ones that have been tracking the pods in the gulf for YEARS...and they are from different countries! Does that answer your smart ass question?

  • It is absolutely horrendous that this boat is continually driving over and around these whales. Whales die from ship strike quite often. One should check out the be whale wise guidelines. There are fines for such actions in the State of Washington. BE WHALE WISE!

  • You are another idiot that doesn't have a clue! These Whales followed us and are one of the most agile mammals in the world! Go hug a tree!

  • taipanbay, your right. There are guidelines one has to take when around these animals. However, these orca were FOLLOWING marlinmccune and purposely swimming under their boat. If marlinemccune had turned sharply to get away from it then, he(or she) would have run the risk of hitting the orca for sure. The best thing to do is too slowly maneuver away from the whale and if it he follows, he follows. Marlin did the right thing. There's really nothing one can do if the whale decides to follow.

  • I would love to make a living in the outdoors. It must be awsome. I would love to spot killer whales and they come close to the boat.

  • Thanks! I just wanted to share something special with peopleI didnt deserve getting a rude comment! Im proud of being from the country, being a cowboy and making my living in the outdoors! Like somebody once said Id spit some Beechnut in that dudes eye and shootem with my old 45 a country boy will survive! LOL!

    The Saltwater Cowboy

  • Lol, you must have copied and paseted that because I saw this same comment written to someone else.

  • This is very awesome! Thanks for sharing your video!

  • Oh you are welcome...it was amazing!

  • Killer Whales in the Gulf? Pretty crazy, now if only the Bluefins would show themselves!

  • We've had a few on...but never one to the boat...a boat docked next to us at the Mobile Big Game Tournament got one during the tourney though...we got a hunk of that...it was great!

  • looks like you might have some hired help anyway awesome footage

  • That was the edited footage...we filmed for about 45 minutes...it was very cool...they followed us everywhere...we finally just picked up and headed back toward Port A!

  • Would they let you swim with them or would they attack you?

  • How awesome is that?? I am so glad that they finally comfirmed your sightings as Orca!! What the hell else could it have been dummies!! Great filming coming from someone who works with and appreciates wildlife everywhere ;)

  • Are these dangerous?

  • considering they eat fish, sharks, etc. i would not jump in the water. these are not seaworld orca. heh

  • Like the other comment...I don't think I'd swin with them...they might be hungry! LOL!

  • Thank you so much for posting these. I live on the gulf coast and I'm fasinated by killer whales. I think they're cool. I would love to work at sea world or swim with them. lol

  • We were fishing you idiot...they followed us! I bet you voted for Obama too!

  • OOOOOOOOoooo what a great comeback for that "idiot - that I'm almost POSITIVE voted for the obot."

Thanks for sharing the video - much enjoyed. Weren't you guys scared though?

  • awsome video

  • Thanks! It was super cool!

    Scott

  • I'm surprised your mother didn't swallow Crystalette...

Awesome vid guys! I think there is another vid out of Port 'A' of this same pod recorded recently. Could it be the same pod? Great footage and congrats on the surprise.

  • The Hale Yeah recorded some...I only saw two on the video...our pod had many whales in them...I'm helping the scientist keep track of them...very interesting!

  • I know...that Crystalette comment was weird!

  • Capt John Holley-Destin, FL I've seen the orcas twice in the Gulf. 1st time in 1988 the scientist told me I had to be mistaken(OK-nothing else looks like an ORCA) 2nd time in 2002 I got pictures. There were at least 11, but maybe 12. 2 very large males, 2 small calves w/ their mothers and they appeared to stay in 2 seperate groups. Both calves simultaniously turned upside an began nocking heads with their mothers on opposite sides of the boat. 1 large male rushed a lure then backed off---wild

  • Hey there --- Orca's can, and are seen, in virtually EVERY sea in the World. While they do seem to prefer colder waters of less than 60 degrees, there are nomadic pods of Orca's that will enter the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic --- feeding primarily on Crustaceans and deep water species of fish like Tuna or Grouper. Rarely, they can be seen in the Gulf preying on other types of Dolphins or Whales. They have been seen in the Mississippi River as well in Louisiana.

  • They were the coolest thing I've ever seen out there!

    Capt. Scott

  • Wow, a pod of Killer whales in their natural habitat... priceless

  • Yes! It was cool!

  • This is fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing this. I've kayaked with the resident pod in Washington State's San Juan Islands - and that was really inspiring. I had heard they were in the Gulf, but had no idea so many were at one time. One more reason to protect the Gulf!

    Aaron Viles

  • Wow, what an amazing thing to see! I've never heard of orcas in the Gulf of Mexico! That must've been really great to see up close! Cool video; thanks for sharing :)

  • These are a resident pod that visits the Gulf...I have received emails from scientists from all over the world wanting the video and started a webpage for them...This was the first time they were able to actually see a video of the resident pod...it was very cool!

    Fish More, Live Longer!

    Capt. Scott McCune

  • No to the killing of whales. In June, DARERMO LA GRAN BATALLA POR LAS BALLENAS. Gracias por tu video
