Just...bloody....superb......The quality of this music speaks for itself when a cheer can go up from a crowd like that for a forty year old composition that was originally classed as 'library music'. Pure class.
How can there only be 66000+ view of this? I know that I am responsible for the 257 views...I could watch this, and only this, all night long. And to think a host of untalented twits get million+ views
seriously though, mr hawkshaws organ solo at 1.55 is sublime. if not mistaken this musical composed the hit countdown tune as well - simply no end to this mans talents...
Alan Hawkshaw & Brian Bennett: thanks for making all that fantastic music on the label "Bruton Music" thanks for "beautify" the world, I love drinking coffee at night and listen to your music, I hope you are well! I'm excited to see them still playing, eternally through! greetings from Argentina.
That was awesome..simply awesome. I love the Jazz cafe and would have loved to have been at this. The massive cheer that goes up as the final note is played is extremely fitting for two masters as Hawkshaw and Mansfield are, and the KPM allstars have still got it. Fantastic upload, thanks.
God, would have loved to have been there - must have been an awesome night. Pity we can't see the legendary Brian Bennett in the vid but I'm not complaining honestly - so grateful that you recorded the gig at all.
@shortyktfc - i was there mate and it was bloody brilliant. Saw them again the next year (or was it the year after?) at the South Bank Centre and they were even better - it was part of the Meltdown festival and all the morons were across the road watching Pete Bloody Doherty singing songs from the Jungle Book instead. If they ever get together again & you're anywhere near I can't reccomend it highly enough :-)
Interestingly according to the info above, the KPM Allstars include Brian Bennett on drums who was responsible for another classic BBC sports theme, that of the Golf coverage. I think it's called "Chase Side Shoot Up"
Alan Hawkshaw also wrote the "Grange Hill" theme which was actually called "Chicken Run" or something like that, I think. A slightly re-mixed version was used as the theme tune for the original series of "GIVE US A CLUE"
go to moviegrooves and search for KPM ;-) quote: "This is an officially licenced CD release of a live recording of the KPM All Stars when they played at the Jazz Cafe in London, October 2006"

This is pretty much what the full track sounds like on the BBC Sport soundtrack LP.
The geezer on organ is called Alan Hawkshaw and he worked for the KPM music library at the same time as Keith Mansfield who wrote the tune. Between them they wrote loads of tracks that eventually became BBC theme tunes....The Beeb went to companies like KPM to buy library music for their shows because they didn't want to use chart music and have to pay royalties.
I'd love to meet Keith - He's a legend. He's done loads you know? Wimbledon, BBC Athletics & loads of other stuff, which is avaialble on obscure CD's, for example: "Pop Package, World Cup, Sporting Highlight's, Grandstand (alternative version) etc. etc. .....amazing!
couldn't agree with you more! these guys are musical artists in every sense of the word. loved this kind of music as a kid, still loving now. i never thought i'd see an old geezer get so funky!
By the way I hope every knows that Tony Hatch of Mrs and Mrs theme music also wrote the theme to Sposrtnight. I wish I could see these guys perform that live.
Hard pressed to find two harder working musicians back in the 60's. KPM 1000 series contains the best library music ever. It helped etch a massive form in the british 60's TV music style. Not forgetting Brian Bennett, Syd Dale, John Cameron, Duncan Lamont, Johnny Pearson, Dave Lindup & Johnny Hawksworth. Sensational.
Mansfield is a legend - he also composed Wimbledon, The Athletics theme (BBC) and The Big Match (ITV), as well as many other 60's/70's instrumental classics.
I am not quite sure if he did or not write Grange Hill but he did or i was told he did Tucker's Luck. Alan is a very good song writter and has writtern many good themes and songs and also had a short spell in The Shadows.
