And safety glass, laminated tempered glass, wouldn't have large loose fragments either. The only actual glass that would shatter in that manor would be standard plate glass like you would find in your home windows, not something DOT approved

I saw the episode last night. I did 2 years of storm chasing, including being in the middle of an EF1 tornado (rather wimpy at that). What you saw was very, very real. They were in what looks like an EF3 or getting close to an EF4 tornado. That will blow windows out of a car when there's debris flying around - which there was.

A comment on debris - I was hit with a twig in that EF1 that passed right over me and it embedded in my arm about an inch. The above tornado was much more powerful.
