I saw the original Who and Led Zep here in NYC at Madison Sq. Garden back in the early 70s. I though Keith Moon was clearly superior to Bonham...although Bonham was up there with the drummers I have seen over the years. Drummers invariably play to the music. For the Beatles, Ringo was perfect. For the Stones, Charlie Watts was similarly a right fit.

Maybe because I have crap speakers on my computer... but I know at around 4:35 there is a harmonic overtone that is created by the perfect tuning of the two "floor toms" that sounds so cool!!! That is what the the crowd is responding to at 4:38. If you can play this over a good sound system, you can hear it.

The truth is I haven't got the foggiest clue. But I think he has his left and right feet on a kick drum each and his hands on one of the floor toms. Correct me anyone. I'll be more than happy to know how he does it.

Back in the 80's, when I was about 20, I saw Neil Peart and Alex live about two weeks apart. And I had seen Rush live before. But it was the first time I'd seen Van Halen. It was the tour where they opened for Black Sabbath. And they still had Ozzie. And David Lee was still shrieking and prancing about on stage. Props to Sammy but I prefer the original line-up.

Before that I thought Neil Peart was the best drummer I'd ever see live. K. Moon and John Henry both having passed. But I was wrong!!
