  • What guitar is he playing?

  • @dashboardgurl2000 aren't white roses like, his seed? he's just saying what he wants, it's not like he's a "kindred spirit" in the way you think.

  • What the absolute fuck is this shit? I can't believe what I'm seeing. Where's the fucking sweater Jeff?!

  • i dunno, this or rap? well, while i do love lil wayne telling me all about doing drugs and being a dickhead, i'm gonna have to go with this. still on the fence, though...not really.

  • One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite artist!

  • There was a reference to Jeff and Neutral Milk Hotel on the show Parks and Rec. and it give me a little bit of hope.

  • You're in love with someone you've never met, Jeff? Funny, people feel the same about you.

  • @frankmarra dude, i bought tickets to see him play at the paramount theatre that monday after he plays the All Tomorrows Parties festival. i spent a crap load on the 2 tickets but it will be worth it. probably my fave musician of all time.

  • Can anyone help me with the strum pattern on this please?

  • @treysfull i can, listen to the song and practice. reading UDUDUUDuDUDuUDUDuDududududuDUDudUDUDUDuDUDududDU isnt going to make you a better guitar player

  • Jeff is our Townes.

  • I feel both triumphant and depressed listening to this song. A celebration of life while simultaneously a song about mass murder.

  • High art. What a fitting tribute to those innocents who died in that genocide.

  • I'm pretty much in love with Jeff Mangum.

  • He's probably one of the only people that can wail on a couple of chords and demand peoples interest... I mean this as a compliment.

  • i just found this band.. wtf someone give me more

  • this song has the best lyrics ever. EVER.

  • a day after my birthday. what a time in my life.

  • I quoted this song in an english essay. Brownie points awarded?

  • amazing lyrics

  • Well, he's married now...so there are at least two he loves.

  • The only man I ever loved, singing about the only girl he's ever loved. She's in his history books, he's on the screen.

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is an album in which it's impossible to pick a favorite song. However, this is probably the one I've listened to the most.

  • the only girl I ever loved

  • i adoreeeeeee this

  • what kind of guitar is he using there?

  • okay its a gibson es-125

  • amazing. Jeremy Koster did some really good stuff with Chocolate U.S.A. and Olivia Tremor Control. and one of the other members was in bablicon...There's been that rumour for the past ten years that theres two records worth of recorded N.M.H. material that was supposed to be released as a double album.

  • @liquidsnake1979

    Jeremy Koster?

Well....there's Julian Koster and then there's Jeremy Barnes....

  • ADORE. THIS. Always my favorite.

  • man, I dig his voice.

  • excuse me for being ignorant but i dont rly know much about this band, are they still around and are there more members in the band?

  • @littlebilly666

they've been on hiatus since around 1998. They are more members, but this guy was the singer/songwriter and the main driving force. You should listen to their album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, it'll blow your mind.

  • no, the lead singer went nuts. there were more members.

  • @littlebilly666

The drummer is Jeremy Barnes, from the band "A Hawk and a Hacksaw"

One of the members, Julian Koster, has a band called The Music Tapes and has alot of good solo stuff

  • mostly definately check out the album this is from, In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. it's one of the bests album of all time.

  • They're long gone and it's mostly this fellow.

Check 'em out on itunes-- they're pretty good.

  • greatest.

  • Favorite album ever, favorite song ever. This is fantastic. Jeff Magnum is without a doubt one of the most talented musicians ever born. Even if his music is simple, it is beautiful.

  • ay madre mia madre miaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • come back....please!

  • might be the greatest lyrics of all time.

  • this.

  • this X 1 million

  • Its about Anne Frank. Very sad..

Amazing how he still somehow manages to capture sadness in such an uplifting and hope-inspiring style, tempo

  • i wish i could have seen them play

    jeff mangum is genius

  • thank you for posting Neutral Milk Hotel!

  • this song makes me so happy even though its sad

  • Such an amazing band

In the aeroplane over the sea is by far one of the best albums ever to have been released

  • now she's a little boy in spain playing pianos filled with flames

    weeeeeeee!

  • so beautiful

  • this brings me pretty close to tears.

  • i love it when people can wail and get as intense live as they do in a recording. ahhh, hurts so good, jeff.

  • Dashboardgurl2000, you're very correct, but i dont think that his love is particularly stronger for Ann than anyone else in her situation. She symbolizes everything that happened, and the evils that took place.

  • such a great singer for a such a bad guitar player!! this is Neutral Milk Hotel! this is legend! this is ROCK N ROLL god damm it!! fucking good

  • i dont suppose anyone knows what that guitar is?

  • A Gibson ES-125

  • i love you and i want to have your babies. thank you very much.

    :-)

  • :^p indeed.

  • great song

  • Everyone has a right to their own opinion to music even if it is expressed in a childish light. If no one but musicians are allowed to say something negative about a band/musician, then it would follow that it is only they that can say something positive as well.

  • i wish i had the opportunity to see nmh live. they are one of the best bands i have ever listened to. so powerful.

  • "and here's where your mother sleeps, and here is the room where your brothers were born"

everytime he sings that line, it's something so powerful to me, i can't even describe it. I have no idea why that's my favorite line in the song, but it is<3

  • wholehearted agreement

  • 2:49 is pretty scary.

  • gahahahahaha!!!

  • HAHAHAHAHA that made me laugh really hard and you're right, it's fucking terrifying.

  • Brilliant. This is my favourite NMH song.

  • This is amazing!!!!I've never seen any movies of him live. He is so vulnerable when he's performing, I've never seen anything like it.

  • Brillian lyrics... We need to see more of Jeff... PLEASE!!!

  • dude this guy rocks so fucking much. great video.

  • I don't get why people say he is a bad singer.

    It sound great to me.

  • who says this? his range is incredible..and almost no singer commands me to sing along more..and usually when i do my voice cracks all over because i don't have nearly as much lungs as this guy.. to me he has one of the coolest most appealing voices in rock history

  • lol i used to have trouble reaching his high notes but i kept doing sirens and it helped so much so now i sing Aeroplane songs just about everyday in my truck =]

#1 album in my list, swurtagod

  • Sirens? is that some sort of exercise?

  • yeahh its where you start with the lowest note you can hit and bend all the way to the highest note you can hit and keep doing it over and over trying to widen your range. it really helps.

  • thats great! thanks for the advice, ill give it a try.

  • what are sirens?

i have trouble getting the high notes in aeroplane too

  • He has the best voice i have ever heard, besides Colin Hay.

  • love this song

  • that's weird

  • You're preaching to the choir, Tom.

  • BEST SONGWRITER EVER!!

  • Jeff Magnum is....AMAZING. Words can't even describe it! I'm working on covering this song and this is like intimidating me lol

  • It's Mangum not Magnum

  • whoops...ok then jeff MANGUM is AMAZING.

  • I'm slowly slipping in love with his singing.

I was at FYE the other day and I asked for In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and the bitch was like, "Don't you think his voice sounds annoying?!?!" And I was speechless. Arrogance.

  • you should've slapped him/her/it/?

  • I could definitely see how some find his voice annoying. It's very nasal and he belts out at full steam. Personally, I love it; But I can see how some might not feel the same.

  • What the hell were you doing shopping at FYE?

  • jeff mangum is like stephen malkmus but 10 times more indie

  • except that that doesn't mean anything

  • decades aren't written in possessive form unless something is owned by a decade, which, as of yet, is empirically impossible. '90s not 90's.

  • If you didn't get what he was saying because of a misplaced apostrophe, maybe he is not the stupid one here...

  • I agree that it doesn't make sense that decades would be written as possessives, but it's actually correct according to some authoritative sources. For example, take a look at the NY Times' style guide. That doesn't make any more sense, but you can't just assume ignorance when you see it written that way.

On another note, this is an outstanding song, and it's sad to see the band agree that they would rather retreat into obscurity, while I'd rather see them write more songs as awesome as this.

  • Anybody catch what Mangum says at the end?

  • "and this is where scott plays the trombone and trumpet, and it sounds really good, but he's not here because he's in california"

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar that is?

  • Gibson ES-125

  • i prefer the album version, always gets me rattled up

  • rust never sleeps

  • you fool, that's decaf

  • her eyes♪

  • panda is a genius. mangum as well.

  • Panda Bear? I agree if that is the case!

  • I still consider "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" as the best album ever made, but if someone were to say that "Ok Computer" and "Loveless" were better, I would have no problem with that since those are the only other albums I would consider epic and perfect. It just comes to show that you know great music if you if you consider those 3 albums your favorites.

  • That is all relative :P but yes they are good albums

  • it probably would have came anyway, but i'm sure too much acid and then people falling in love with you and camping out on your lawn do not help.

  • this is just the grrrrrrrrreeeeatest thing i've ever heard. reminds me of when i was a lad...

  • what is Jeff doing now??? is he in a band? or is he still writing music?

  • he plays with the other Elephant 6 bands as backup mainly

  • Jeff Mangum... The way he writes songs, I'd swear he's never heard a conventional pop song in his life.

    It's absolutely effing fantastic.

  • I would give anything to see him perform live. Amazing. Simply amazing.

  • what is that guitar? a kay? a gibson?

    i want that!

  • gibson es-125

  • hardly. what does the number of chords have to do with how good or bad a song is?

  • He's just such an amazing song writer.

No one has seen him for ten years. maybe he's aged horribly. But imagine the songs he must have written between since then.

  • no one has seen him for ten years? Not even family? Thats so sad. A horrible loss.

  • Well. 2006/7 he started being spotted in the kind of bands the destruction of Orange Six left in the wakes gigs.

Yeahh he's family. He's in hiding from limelight in Athens, Georgia.

Athens is smaller than my hometown (in georgia) so one day i intend to find him.

  • Well at least he's still alive. Yeah, fame can do some bad stuff to people.

  • neutral milk hotel weren't exactly famous

  • Yeah but in hindsight, they were an amazing band to come out of the 90's, the were just indie, which is the definition of "off the beaten track." Let me put it this way, if you had to say who was a better songwriter, would you pick Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, or Jeff Magnum of NMH? Only talking about their lyrics, music has no part to play in this. I make this comparison because Cobain is hailed as the unquestionable messiah of the 90's

  • "Cobain is hailed as the unquestionable messiah of the 90's"

    Is he really?

I think it's an unfair comparison. Nirvana are very different to Neutral Milk Hotel. And they're both good in their own ways.

  • He's been laying low, but he's been doing random stuff since 97,' and plenty of people have seen him. He even released a bulgarian folk cover album in 01'

  • For the record, it's field recordings, not covers.

  • oops, don't know why I'd call it a cover album, that'd be like calling a christmas album a cover album I suppose.

  • Hes been on a few things, backing vocals on apples in stereos latest album, and hes doing something for another album soon

  • wow can u believe that it has been almost 11 years since NMH was at the peak of their awesomeness??

  • This is my all time favorite NMH song. Everything about it is amazing in every way.

Hehe, yeah. I would probably sell my house to see Jeff Mangum perform live. Logical priorities be damned.

  • Haha that made me laugh. ^

  • now she's a little boy in Spain, playing pianos filled with flames...

  • jeff makes his own kind of music

  • amen.

  • rad guitar

  • this song is amazing!

  • does anyone know what kind of guitar he's using? i've wanted to know for ahile. he gets so many great tones out of it and i want the NMH guitar lol.

  • Looks like an archtop with a dog-ear P90 pickup in it. Looks like a Gibson ES-125 with the pickguard removed. These guitars were produced between 1941-1970, and are not considered collectable. It was more of a student model, though they can go from $750 to upwards of $1000, depending on the condition.

  • never mind wow its easy

  • my band wants to cover this song anyone know the chords to it?

  • If i'm not mistaken the chords are C, G, D, and then an A comes in in the "and here's where your..." part. Hope I helped!

  • The "and here's where your..." part is G Am Bm C G. Thats not what Jeff actually plays put its how the song is voiced. Also, on the record, those are the notes the horns and bass hit. And yes, my friend, it is C G D for the rest.

  • i love neutral milk hotel

  • Owns :D So glad my dutch friend introduced me :)

  • !!!!!!!!!!

  • thank you for finding this!

i've never seen jeff live before...so glad you put this video up!

  • he is one of the true music geniuses

  • an artist
