i think this is so cool that you found a video from 1903!!! it's really fascinating how people back then didn't care who they were dancing with, like when people were "cartwheeling" over the guy on his knees. nowadays...we all just think we're better than everyone (not that i do)
Anyone comparring "cakewalk" to "blackface" is crazy....What you said is like comparing 1st degree murder to accidental homicide.....Do your research……. white people did black face with the purpose of hurting blacks. It was propaganda against racial equality, and mint to stoke the flames of hate and fear.... Blakeface had a vicious intent..... (White face) was not a whole industry created to humiliate white people!
+Maybe+ you should learn to spell before you tell others to go to school. And your grammar made my head spin. It's to be expected, racists are morons.

Hello sir. Thank you very much for uploading this video. I recently did a video about the historical evolution of dances, and this one was the first that I started with. As a thank you, I linked back to your video in the description. Check it out for yourself and see how dance has changed over this century. Once again, thanks.
The rag time music on this video is an anachronism. Rag came about around 1900 or later. Cakewalks go back to the 1840's. The tune "Dixie" is a cakewalk.
I love the guy that keeps flipping and dropping that woman on the beach. I think that "Superman" song and dance could be inspired by this sort of craze
for your information if you want to know about the history of both. Ragtime is a musical concept and later came the cakewalk a form of dance, born from the hearts of the colored folks. All part of the evolution of the evolving African culture of the world. White folks only emulated the cakewalk, by way of comedy. get your facts straight.
Funny thing is..the cakewalk was invented by black people to make fun of the way white people danced. The white people saw them doing it and decided that it was a catchy dance..
Ragtime and Cakewalk are not the same thing. Historically they came about at almost the same time, the Cakewalk predating the Rag in print by a couple years . Cakewalks have simple syncopation and a simple usually single note melody line. Ragtime was not intended to be danced to, and is more melodically and rhythmically complex.
Wow. Except cakewalks were done in the postbellum south as a way to deride black people. A cakewalk revival would be a white supremacy revival. Nice try though.
hahaha i'm doing lsat practice tests and i'm like 'what the fuck is the cakewalk'? - 'is that where people dance for cakes'? - tough passage though initially
I find it humorous that the white cakewalkers on the beach were imitating the black cakewalkers, who actually were imititaing the wealthy white cakewalkers who were imititating the black cakewalkers who started the whole thing.
Whew! That wore me out more than cakewalking my own damn self.
@olivej1914 me too, the first example in a long line of cultural treasures created by African-Americans (not just music and dance, but bar-b-que as well) that were co-opted by white society. i wouldn't say "stolen' because that implies the thing stolen remained the same in white hands, and white versions of black music, dance, etc., has NEVER been anywhere as good as the original.
That stuff wasn't really co-opted by white society, it was the creation of distinct styles as the result of a white-black culture clash. Country, blues, American folk, creole, etc. al. weren't strictly "created by African-Americans" or European-Americans, but were influenced by each other. There's no "white versions of black music, dance, etc.", it's just another style influence. And one version of a specific style being "anywhere as good as the original" is more a matter of taste, I think.
I can't find info on Charlie Charles. I'm researching hip hop roots and finding lots of interesting stuff - Snake Hips, Congolese dancing - but I'm having a hard time finding out about this 2x Charlie.
