As far as domination by Peugeot/Citroen I think that 8 WRC titles in a row count for domination in my book. Audis? Nowhere to be seen and they are still living off that halo effect of winning in the 80s, but VW are on the way back which is good to see and to be encouraged.
All I am saying is that it suited certain manufacturers to drive the banning process as they were no longer winning; better for them to leave on a winning perception rather than wait until Lancia and Peugeot gained the Marketing high ground which they would have done as they had the better cars. The Quattro was no longer as competitive and in truth only excelled while every other manufacturer ran two wheel drive cars.
I agree that the overriding reason given for the banning of Group B cars was the death of Henri Toivonen; I was and still am a huge fan so I am well aware and was gutted at his death; he certainly wouldn’t have wanted Group B banned
Brave drivers have been killed in horrific accidents before without wholesale banning of certain categories of rallying/track racing etc.
Politics from inside FISA is driven by self interest as per all organisations and the governing board of FISA is populated by very influential representatives of the Automotive Industry which is what you would expect when you think about it. It is an opportunity to direct and influence the direction of motorsport which best reflects your own strengths as a manufacturer.
It was a normally aspirated V6 you morons designed and developed specifically for the 6R4; a massive investment by BL but all came to nought when Audi stopped winning and got Group B cas banned. They couldn't stand the fact that Lancia and Peugeot were better than them and Peugeot /Citroen have been winning ever since.. so Audi are stil sulking.
The engine ended up being the engine in the Jaguar XJ220; not a lot of people know that haha.
Audi had no choice in stopping rallying as did all the other teams, it was banned after the death of Henri Toivonen and the near death incidents involving spectators. FISA banned Grp B, Audi had nothing to do with it! Citroen/Peugeot have not been winning ever since either - Mitsubishi, Subaru etc have dominated too!! Get your facts right!
i might be young but i was brought up with this sound! and my god i love this sound!!!!!!!!!!! and i have actually sat in the genuine prodrive built 6R4
Last i herd Tom Walkinshaw brought the rights to the 6r4 engine and he works very close to jaguar hence the 220 jag and i think Tom was going to set up a race series where the 6r4 engine would be used in track cars .
I dont think that the delta integrale got about 900hp, even the most powerful got 700 or so. And if you want to elect a "best rallye car ever made", you cant compare it with the audi quattro.
it wasnt a twin turbo. yes it was a modified rover v8. but it was naturally aspirated, you would hear the turbo's unloading through waste gates etc....
Based on a modified Rover V8 but had bespoke cylinder heads, block etc. A lot of Metros in Rally cross did actually use the bi-turbo engine aswell, those things were even more savage! with around 700bhp and a very low overall weight I guess that's no surprise!
@fivenine Actually it was not a modified Rover v8. It did use a modified Rover v8 during chassis development though, but never raced with it. The engine was bespoke and is thought to be the first engine specifically designed for rallying. The guy who designed it was an ex-employee of Cosworth and it's supposed to use some design elements of the Cosworth DFV.
Years later a turbo version of the engine was used in the Jaguar XJ220.
Believe it or not they started with a Rover (buick) V8 and lopped two cylinders off, and used that as a starting point for David Wood and cosworth to work on, adding overhead Cams etc...
No it's a twin turbo V6, it was meant to be a V12 when people pre-ordered them but jaguar hit the ground hard and couldn't fund it so instead used a V6 unit with 2 turbo's strapped to it. Hence why it's called the 220, it was meant to hit 220mph but the V6 wouldn't carry it that far.
yeah it may have been capable of that speed because of its power...the reality is it never had the gearing to do that...so your original comment is still stupid and irrelevant...so once again....fuck off
its not the point you get the place to get 220 mph but it can make 220mph i agree they have short gears but they dont have only 5 gers for example they got even 9 like lancia delta
yea the car with that kind of power can reach about 190-200 maybe 220 without all the spoilers....im was trying to make the point their gears are not set up for that
thats right they can make 220mph but their gears are not made for that becose its very hard that you can find an place on rally stages to get 220mph.but the could easly made longer gears and i belive thy could get even more than 220mph becose they are very smal cars and not heavy with one hell of a power.take a look of lancia delta HF integrale its the best rally car ever made. and it haves 900HP
@nvidia4x4 The Lancia Delta has 9 gears? Where did you get that from? As a road car or a race car, the only transmission I've ever heard of a Delta having is a 5-speed. Six, maybe in the newest models..I don't remember. Is this some kind of racing modification I've never heard of or something? Or did you mean to type "6" instead of "9"?
@kalasnikov121 Oh, okay! =) You had me searching Google for a few minutes looking for the "9-speed" transmission you mentioned! Of course, I found nothing. =P
LOL - that's my recording which John Price used on his website - awesome sounding car. The mics couldn't quite cope with the volume of the induction but gave a really nice wave reflected edge to the sound.

The MG Metro 6R4 (6 cylinder R rear engine 4 wheel drive)
It was a special one off designed V6,Indeed the first development engines used to power prototype cars was a Rover V8 with two cylinders lopped off.
The finished engine was designated V64V standing for V6 for the configuration and 4V denoting four valves per cylinder.
Stats:-
Capacity: 2991 cc
Performance: International spec: 0-60 mph 3.2 seconds. 0-110 mph 10.00 secs. Clubman spec: 0-60 mph 4.5 seconds. 0-100 mph 12.8 secs.

I heard that the Ferrari F40 has the same engine as the Metro. The sound is a little bit similar.
Jamirofan89 3 years ago
I believe the Jaguar XJ220 inherited the 6R4 engine (with a couple of turbos for good measure). The F40 had a V8 twin-turbo of Ferrari's own design.
85driftermk3 3 years ago 5
Yes your right.I forgot the F40 has V8.
Jamirofan89 3 years ago
JAg XJ220 has a V12, this is a V6 but it is essentially half of the Jag engine.
gaz4110 2 years ago
The XJ220 is powered by a 3.5 litre twin turbo V6.
The Jag XJR15 had a V12, though. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
