I think everyone at some point in their life has been in this situation, and within it felt connected with a random stranger but couldn't quite do anything about it. It's almost perfect in a way...and almost a shame. Like that perfect little secret.
What was powerful for me about this movie was its subtlety. There is obvious tension between the two lead characters but it isn't overblown or made too obvious. There is nothing quite so compelling as unrequieted romantic tension. One senses the loneliness that Bill and Scarlett feel immersed in a strange world and how disconnected each one is from their spouses either by physical or emotional distance. And yet, if they had cheated on their spouses, it would have destroyed the film.
Every time I hear this song it gives me the feeling of the movie, I love that feeling..
I think people either love this film or they hate it. I just happen to think this film is so damn sexy.. It's one of my favourite movies of all time, actually I think it could be my favourite because I can watch it again and again and don't get bored with it, I don't mean like every week or so but every once in a while. Bill Murray, I think he's great in this film, so is Scarlett Johanson.
What a great combination... Roxy Music's classic ballad and one of the best movies of all time. Lost in Translation is a brilliant work of art. I love it! Both the movie and song are timeless. Thank you for posting this! Very "natsukashi" for me.
Yessss Lost in Translation, my favourite movie! But some people think it sucks, they think it's nothing special, why do we like it and they don't, what do we see in it that the others don't?
I love these people! I loved this movie, it was and always will be my all time favorite! It sent chills up my spine when Bill sang that song! It reminded me of my firt time in Tokyo and later the time I first started dating my lovely wife. We stayed at the Park Hyatt and I sat in the same seat Bill sat in at the New York Bar and I didn't even know it. I love you guys! I love Bill, I love Scarlett and I love Sophia! But most of all I love Japan! Thanks guys! I can't wait to ride the shinkansen!
Yep, believe it or not, you'll find love in many forms in your life and good times and bad times. It all hurts and feels wonderful, too. Don't give up.
If you love this movie, like I do, then you have a small Japanophile romantic in you somewhere.
Those that don't like this movie tend to have no interest in the kinds of things they find fun in the movie, the kind of things I find fun. Going out with strangers, being completely out of your element, not knowing where you're going, but know that you'll enjoy as much of is as you can. A good night is a night that ended completely different than how you planned it.
Reminds me of when I met my boyfriend John in the Far East- he was also a calm person and so sure of himself in all ways- we were together many years like this-
we all have been there: dreaming about true love, love without boundry, without walls. someone who understands us completely but life doesn't work out that way. we have kids, have bills to pay and a less than stellar wife. you can't have your cake and eat it too... why can't we?
less than stellar wife? i'm sorry, but your comment reads as if your audience was entirely heterosexual male (specifically, males looking for that "stellar" wife).
Or you have just publicly expressed your disappointment in your choice of matrimonial partner.
Again, wtf is your problem? I never said anything about the sex of the majority, that was all you.
Read before you start attacking people. Seriously, stop being a complete douche. Why did you come in to this thread and watch this great video just to be a complete dick to people?
I love Bill Murray so much! This film is amazingly beautiful all-around, but I love everything this man does. If I could, I'd kiss him right on the mouth.
Travel, loneliness and uncontrolable desire to be with someone to share something special thousands of miles away from home...I've felt that many times. This film is a master piece for men with a closed minded partner whose world revolves around material shits. Thanks for the video.
you could definitely look at the film this way, but i have doubts that the writer/director (a young woman), actually was thinking about it from this perspective.
Fortunately, the director made the two characters display their innocence and a beautiful sense of perceiving life.Amazing!Bill Murray is exceptional.Nothing ludicrous, nothing trivial...how come that such scenes can be natural and dreamlike at the same time? This movie makes you aware of your neglected soul and pure expectations.Someone special is waiting for us all somewhere, people!Don t quit waiting!
Awesome video juanjosetorres. Great song. Great movie. Great scene. Couldn't have said it better than the half-dozen people who left comments right before me.
One thing to add - another great use of a great song in this movie - "just Like Honey" by Jesus and Mary Chain at the very end of the movie. What a great film - wish I could watch it now.
Ive had this moment before, its just perfect. this movie is perfect, how he struggles between his life back home which is everyday life we all live, and this perfect life that coulda been with this perfect woman
theres somin bout this film which i jst love...to me its one of the best films ever made...cld watch it everyday..and wldnt be bored of it...it is true how such a simple karaoke scene can make such an big impact on the film.
So true! The karaoke scene may be my favorite too. Isn't it interesting how a simple scene of someone singing can make such an impact? There's no big action, no big one-liners, it's just a scene of people being real and that moment when your eyes lock with another's and there's all this unsaid potential and desire existing in the air inbetween you.
I haven´t actually watched the movie, but I´ve always thought this is the most sensual song ever.If I was a song, I´d be this one. Hope you like it. Rosita.
I totally agree...Far too many words in the English language, giving leeway to self inflated geeks' didactic urges...Shut the fck up pretty much sums it up...
seen it yesterday... i dont understand it. but thats good. it left a special feeling that i just cant describe excactly. the movie is about love and romance but not in an ordinary way, its much more complex. its about being strange in a strange country, about the distance, about being empty in an empty relationship, about finding new joy of life, about falling in love without showing it, about .... haha, to be honest: it bored me!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It amazes me how many people see this movie as a love yarn without at all being aware of, or concerned by, the fact that they're both married. "Love" and "romance" become synonymous with breaking marital vows for a week's worth of novelty and taboo, in what is probably modern culture's greatest irony.
To feel anything less than *ambivalence* - in the best sense of that rapidly deteriorating word - towards the movie's tensions is emotional idiocy, puerile fantasy.
oh my god what IS wrong with you.... cant you just open your mind just a little bit... this movie is not, in your COMPLETEY INSANE VIEW, about sexual tension and adultory....??.... you really have no idea do you?.... its the friendship thats created when 2 people r lost in a country & culture that they no nothing about & finding them selves its not bout cheating on ur partners u stupid wanker... did u completely miss the whole point behind the movie
Apparently I did miss the whole point -- and apparently so did 99% of the people posting here. Thank you for sharing your trenchant exegetical skills to set us all straight!
Believe it or not, there are more layers to the human condition than upholding your wedding vows. The characters meet at a time when they feel isolated and hopeless, and that similarity only is enough to build a friendship on. The point is that there is no reasoning behind the connection, if anything it is a film about quaint and fortunate coincidence. Nevertheless, I do thank you for your acerbic grandiloquence and anachronistic moralising, now kindly slink on back to your simpler time.
Step 1: Consult the OED for the definition of "ambivalence".
Step 2: Ask yourself how this word is different from "revulsion" or "disgust", words which are grammatically (and, as you appear to argue, semantically) fungible in my last sentence.
Step 3: Kindly scan the remainder of the subliterate comments in this forum - teeming with teenage allusions to love and romance - to fathom the context in which I posted.
P.S. Your use of the word "grandiloquence" WAS intended ironically, wasn't it?
I'm never ironic when it comes to pointless youtube debates. Too much is at stake. How about YOU consult YOUR dictionary for the meaning of ambivalence. I think you will find that yes, in fact, it is synonymous with both revulsion and disgust. Wait, you live in stupid america were dey dont hav dicsionryz!
Out of curiosity (honestly), in what way is ambivalence deteriorating? Sometimes I hear it used as though it was 'semantically fungible' with apathy, is that what you were referring to?
"The coexistence in one person of contradictory emotions or attitudes (as love and hatred) towards a person or thing." (OED def.) So, no, my good sir, it is not quite synonymous with "disgust" and "revulsion" -- it implies rather conflict, attraction to the film's fragile beauty but a rejection of any sordid consummation.
As for the second question, yes, it's a common prey of catachrestic rot, with "apathy" being a common mutation - though not, as we can see, the only one. ...
haha, seriously? You gave me the definition, that's great.
Please reread my last post until you notice the tongue in my cheek (the first line is a good place to start.. read: 'of course it was ironic'). While I may not be entirely immune to catachresis, I can safely say that mistaking ambivalence for revulsion is not an error I'm likely to make. Furthermore, you weren't even the object of my sarcasm, so I'm a little 'nonplussed, slightly sad' that you felt the need to refute.
Lol!! Fecking eck, how ridiculous is this comment. Please, really think before you type!! Yes, I was extremely concerned by the fact that they were both married, lol. So concerned I immediately stopped going to the cinema....you tit.
Liar. Despite the fact I don't know who you are nor read anything you wrote (though it's obvious I'm infinitely poorer for it), nonetheless when we spoke about it last month you said, "I don't care. I'd have rocked her guts and cleaned up with my wife's wedding dress. That's love, baby." Furious, I came here and said YOU personally were not at all concerned that they were married, and afterwards advocated the unconditional surrender of personal happiness to connubial dharma.
Hmm, my god, you are disturbed. When we spoke?? Er, when was then that...oh, thats right...in your head...of course. How silly of me. Freak. I recommend seeing a doctor mate.
On a positive note, I really love this song and think it goes great with the movie. This is probably in my top 3 movies and I recently I stayed in the very hotel in the film which was a cool yet surreal experience I can tell you.
haha angry rants thru snarling jaws are all the more entertaining when they're colourfully composed. Are you one of those rare sorts that exhibit a positive correlation between anger and eloquence? Perhaps the key to connubial dharma is finding someone who expands your vocabulary each time you get into a fight? =P
No; if I were upset I'd go do something constructive, like strangle a homeless man. Arguing aesthetics on youtube can, if anything, only make one surprised, nonplussed, slightly sad. It is, nonetheless, good to be reminded that two people can share an identical object of affection, but have COMPLETELY different fantasies about it -- as, for instance, I would feel if discussing this movie with any of the epsilons who've posted about it.
With regards to the film, I admit I misinterpreted your stance on it - hence the initial self-deprecating reply. Perhaps I did approach their martial status with a little too much ambiv- sorry, apathy. But being married was not simply an obstacle to their relationship. It was part of what drove them together, each in mutual appreciation of the others circumstance. I suppose that's why I didn't devote enough consideration to their marriages; I subconsciousl

The key is to never settle. You might end up alone, but you've probably had a much more interesting and rewarding existence as a result.
Perhaps maybe you actually DID meet this mythical "soul mate" of yours after so many years.
Maybe I sound like an idealist, but I've done a good amount of living even though I'm just a baby in the wider aspect of things.
So, take my comments with a grain of salt.

What a great film - wish I could watch it now.

theres somin bout this film which i jst love...to me its one of the best films ever made...cld watch it everyday..and wldnt be bored of it...it is true how such a simple karaoke scene can make such an big impact on the film.

love this part in the movie.... it was my favorite!!
maluciaallen 3 years ago
So true! The karaoke scene may be my favorite too. Isn't it interesting how a simple scene of someone singing can make such an impact? There's no big action, no big one-liners, it's just a scene of people being real and that moment when your eyes lock with another's and there's all this unsaid potential and desire existing in the air inbetween you.

questo film è una carezza, per tutti coloro che, proprio come bob, si sono persi e fanno tanta fatica ad andare avanti
69picasso 3 years ago

This is the best movie I've ever seen in my entire life! The atmosphere, the characters the acting.. it all leaves me breathless.
Japan as a background is used amazingly.
This song is beautiful and the lyrics definitly also intensify the whole meaning of the movie.
So..wondeful. <3 Congratulations to Sofia for making such a masterpiece. :) It's a kind of addiction. loveeeee it!!

seen it yesterday... i dont understand it. but thats good. it left a special feeling that i just cant describe excactly. the movie is about love and romance but not in an ordinary way, its much more complex. its about being strange in a strange country, about the distance, about being empty in an empty relationship, about finding new joy of life, about falling in love without showing it, about .... haha, to be honest: it bored me!!!

It amazes me how many people see this movie as a love yarn without at all being aware of, or concerned by, the fact that they're both married. "Love" and "romance" become synonymous with breaking marital vows for a week's worth of novelty and taboo, in what is probably modern culture's greatest irony.
To feel anything less than *ambivalence* - in the best sense of that rapidly deteriorating word - towards the movie's tensions is emotional idiocy, puerile fantasy.
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
oh my god what IS wrong with you.... cant you just open your mind just a little bit... this movie is not, in your COMPLETEY INSANE VIEW, about sexual tension and adultory....??.... you really have no idea do you?.... its the friendship thats created when 2 people r lost in a country & culture that they no nothing about & finding them selves its not bout cheating on ur partners u stupid wanker... did u completely miss the whole point behind the movie
SmellyBean123 3 years ago 2
100% agree with what you have just said!
Their relationships are falling apart and they feel like they are both lost.
But they find themselves in each other!
Japan is such a great setting for the movie aswell.

the movie's about getting mashed on Santori Whiskey and scoring with chicks 20 years younger!
denisthemenace13 3 years ago
Apparently I did miss the whole point -- and apparently so did 99% of the people posting here. Thank you for sharing your trenchant exegetical skills to set us all straight!
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago 3
Believe it or not, there are more layers to the human condition than upholding your wedding vows. The characters meet at a time when they feel isolated and hopeless, and that similarity only is enough to build a friendship on. The point is that there is no reasoning behind the connection, if anything it is a film about quaint and fortunate coincidence. Nevertheless, I do thank you for your acerbic grandiloquence and anachronistic moralising, now kindly slink on back to your simpler time.
disdanic 3 years ago
Step 1: Consult the OED for the definition of "ambivalence".
Step 2: Ask yourself how this word is different from "revulsion" or "disgust", words which are grammatically (and, as you appear to argue, semantically) fungible in my last sentence.
Step 3: Kindly scan the remainder of the subliterate comments in this forum - teeming with teenage allusions to love and romance - to fathom the context in which I posted.
P.S. Your use of the word "grandiloquence" WAS intended ironically, wasn't it?
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
I'm never ironic when it comes to pointless youtube debates. Too much is at stake. How about YOU consult YOUR dictionary for the meaning of ambivalence. I think you will find that yes, in fact, it is synonymous with both revulsion and disgust. Wait, you live in stupid america were dey dont hav dicsionryz!
Out of curiosity (honestly), in what way is ambivalence deteriorating? Sometimes I hear it used as though it was 'semantically fungible' with apathy, is that what you were referring to?
disdanic 3 years ago
"The coexistence in one person of contradictory emotions or attitudes (as love and hatred) towards a person or thing." (OED def.) So, no, my good sir, it is not quite synonymous with "disgust" and "revulsion" -- it implies rather conflict, attraction to the film's fragile beauty but a rejection of any sordid consummation.
As for the second question, yes, it's a common prey of catachrestic rot, with "apathy" being a common mutation - though not, as we can see, the only one. ...
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
haha, seriously? You gave me the definition, that's great.
Please reread my last post until you notice the tongue in my cheek (the first line is a good place to start.. read: 'of course it was ironic'). While I may not be entirely immune to catachresis, I can safely say that mistaking ambivalence for revulsion is not an error I'm likely to make. Furthermore, you weren't even the object of my sarcasm, so I'm a little 'nonplussed, slightly sad' that you felt the need to refute.
disdanic 3 years ago
Ah. Well, I'm afraid the internets proves sterile soil for my sarcasm receptors, at least when it comes to the negation variety.
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
Lol!! Fecking eck, how ridiculous is this comment. Please, really think before you type!! Yes, I was extremely concerned by the fact that they were both married, lol. So concerned I immediately stopped going to the cinema....you tit.
mungbean78 3 years ago
Rube.
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
Hmm, my god, you are disturbed. When we spoke?? Er, when was then that...oh, thats right...in your head...of course. How silly of me. Freak. I recommend seeing a doctor mate.
On a positive note, I really love this song and think it goes great with the movie. This is probably in my top 3 movies and I recently I stayed in the very hotel in the film which was a cool yet surreal experience I can tell you.
mungbean78 3 years ago
Interesting: you're [allegedly] British and yet took seriously sarcasm that would've seemed obvious to a toad.
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
haha angry rants thru snarling jaws are all the more entertaining when they're colourfully composed. Are you one of those rare sorts that exhibit a positive correlation between anger and eloquence? Perhaps the key to connubial dharma is finding someone who expands your vocabulary each time you get into a fight? =P
disdanic 3 years ago
No; if I were upset I'd go do something constructive, like strangle a homeless man. Arguing aesthetics on youtube can, if anything, only make one surprised, nonplussed, slightly sad. It is, nonetheless, good to be reminded that two people can share an identical object of affection, but have COMPLETELY different fantasies about it -- as, for instance, I would feel if discussing this movie with any of the epsilons who've posted about it.
lurdanhelhart 3 years ago
With regards to the film, I admit I misinterpreted your stance on it - hence the initial self-deprecating reply. Perhaps I did approach their martial status with a little too much ambiv- sorry, apathy. But being married was not simply an obstacle to their relationship. It was part of what drove them together, each in mutual appreciation of the others circumstance. I suppose that's why I didn't devote enough consideration to their marriages; I subconsciousl
