  • Hey larry tried to exchange my air norton and tonezone today but your reps said i couldn't

because i live in Canada, very dissapointed, all i wanted was to exchange for the 36 anvr,i was more the willing to pay all shipping costs!!! Oh well....

  • @nicknkell

I understand your disappointment, but it wouldn't be fair to our other customers to make a single exception to our policy, and it isn't practical (or possible) to extend the policy beyond the US.

  • Larry, I am interested in buying your Air Classic-bridge. I have heard it is basically a PAF Classic without a cover (which now, I suppose has covers). Is this true? I love the sound of the paf classic, and all of your pickups!

    Thanks

  • @guitarist779

It is true. We combined the models. The Air Classic is now available with or without a cover.

  • Larry, or anyone,

John Petrucci is listed on the DiMarzio website as using the paf 36th set. Does he use another guitar he likes or does he have a set in his signature guitar?

  • @GuillermoSmyser

I believe they are in a Silhouette 20th Anniversary model.

  • Look fellas, I just bought another set of these. It just won't get any better than this (unless you want to spend 5 grand in real PAFs (no thanks...).

  • @MrCptGonzo Hi, Thanks for your kind comment and I'm glad that your are happy with our PAFs.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Hi Larry.

I bought a set of these and dropped them into a new Gibson Explorer Trem. They sound absolutely fantastic.

  • @ThieleM Happy Holidays and thanks for you're kind comment.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • I got a PAF 36th set of for my next project but neither of the two pickups have the black "PAF DiMarzio" label on the bottom, as shown in the video. The neck has only a hand written label "103" and the bridge has a white printed "DP223F (some number below)". Both are 4-conductor, short leg style and have the same baseplate with engraved with "DiMarzio Pickups Made in USA" as any other dimarzio I've owned. Should I be worried?

    Thanks!

  • @bancika Hi, NO worries, I reserved the sticker for the long leg, vintage coils with the traditional cable. Since they are so similar (in appearance), I do want them passed off as originals. The sound and everything else is the same as the one you purchased.

    Hope that helps, Happy Holidays.

    Larry DiMarzio

  • I just got this set in my 1975 Ibanez Les Paul and I love 'em! Great work, I'm a relatively heavy player but the low output has me experimenting blues/jazz territory now, loads of fun (mixed in with full-on-power on the neck pickup)

  • "I'm sure you'll like it as much as I do."

Really? I LOVE DiMarzio pickups but my ear is no where near as experienced or discerning as Larry's must be. I'd love the pickup, but I may never be able to appreciate everything that goes into it and the subtleties.

  • Hi Larry, I am building my own super strat with a HSH PU configuration. It's swamp ash body with a brass vibrato trem from wayne charvel measured at 2 inches. The neck is maple with medium nickel jumbo frets and scalloped. I will be installing a brass nut in the neck as well. I am looking for pick ups that are high powered but not muddy that can achieve crazy harmonics naturally and pinched also with great note articulation. I am playing a marshall and mesa triple rec high gain around 7-8 oclock

  • @duck2587

Standard-spaced D Actrivator neck and bridge models should be good, with a Chopper in the middle, or possibly a Fast Track 1 if you want a brighter sound for more versatility.

  • care!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • What is the name of the song at the begining of the video?

  • Hi Larry, I have an original set of dbl creams and they are in my 40th ann 59 LP. They are the most amazing pickups I have ever heard. I build guitars for a living at RnB Custom Guitars and consider myself an audiophile. I have WCR's Crossroads and have gone through many many sets of different brands. Will the New PAF's your doing sound similar to the 70's PAF's you were doing? Thanks, Sincerely, Brian Estes

  • @Guruguitartech

They aren't similar to our pickups from the 70s. The most recent versions incorporate much research we've done, especially in the last 10 years. We couldn't have made these pickups back in the 70s.

  • Hi Larry,

I just ordered another set of your PAFs (equipping all my LPs with them...), but this time I ordered a "custom made" set (basically double cream single cond.) via Axiomatic music in the UK. Do you have any idea how long these made to order Pups will take? Not being impatient, I already have a pair, just asking ;)

  • @MrCptGonzo Hi, Shipments of special orders arrive in the UK around the second week of every month. It will be in time for the mid-October delivery if the order has been placed with our UK Distributor MIRep Ltd. Phone: 1404 822699.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio

    Thanks, helps a lot :)

    best regards

  • You should make an Alnico 3 Humbucker like this I have this one and it sounds awesome but I would like an Alnico 3 in the neck, and I've had no luck finding one. It would be awesome if you made one.

  • @PhysicalGraffiti10

Using a different magnet grade won't necessarily get the sound you want. Substituting AL3 in this pickup would lose some clarity, especially on the low strings, which would not be good in the neck position.

  • Hi Larry,

I hope that you would answer my question. I'm planning to have a custom made Fat Strat ( H-S-S )guitar. Can I still get that woody and fat sound of the 36th. aniv. PAF if I use it in a Strat style guitar? Thanks and God bless

  • Thanks Larry

  • Hello Larry, I'm a starting guitar builder and customizer who never tried your 36th anniversary set. Up to now I only use the most expensive PAF RI british alnico II and IV humbuckers. I think you understand what I mean. Everybody is satisfied but I wonder if you ever compared your alnico V to these II and IV ? Can your technical system do the right work ? I think your own original PAF's can't be alnico V ??? I'm sorry but being a belgian french speaker I know my english isn't that good.

  • @jp6l6

To the best of our ability to measure the performance of the pickups in my guitar, the magnets are Alnico 5. The 36th Anniversary models do not copy the exact construction of the original pickups, and several of the changes we made allow Alnico 5 to perform very similarly to other magnet grades. In the end, the best proof is in the actual sound and feel of our pickups, and I am happy with the way they perform.

  • larry,

I just bought your PAF set to replace a pair of VERY expensive "Boutique" PAF replicas and your 200 dollar set SMOKES them. I guess it's a matter of taste, but yours sound unbelievably "full" and powerful, great for everything from Jazz to Heavy Metal, yet "Vintage-ey" and PAF-ish...the tone that can be heard on so many records! Will be doing a vid of them soon. Definately a keeper! Thanks!

  • @MrCptGonzo Thanks for your kind comments, I like them better too.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Hey Larry, How would you compare the 36th bridge to the super distortion? Obviously the 36th is aimed more towards vintage, but how does it handle harder classic rock?

  • @guitarist779

It can work well with heavier music if you have an amplifier with a fair amount of gain. High-gain amplifiers didn't exist when I designed the Super. At the time, the best way to get a heavier sound was with a hotter pickup.

  • why Alnico V? I heard Seth only used Alnico II and IV in the early PAFs

  • @ChineseR0ck

Thoe source you got this information from is incorrect.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Yes, you are right after a deeper research I found that Alnico 2,3 and 4 were used too! Sorry

    LES PAUL

    =

    SOME PRETTY AWESOME SOUND!

  • these pickups come in a "set" right?can you get them to work of your guitar has a coil tap?my guitar has 2 volumes and 1 tone/coil tap

  • Hi ! I have a question, I have an epiphone les paul std and want to put heavy gauge strings and use it for a metal. What set of humbuckers would you recommend for fat, higain, dark-sounding tone ? Regards.

  • @noszcholera

The choice will depend on what type of amp you have and exactly what type of metal you play. We can recommend the right pickups if you email this info to tech@dimarzio.com

  • Hello there, I have one question to ask, I was considering changing the pickups in my Les Paul and i just wanted to know if a black DP100 bridge and a nickle covered 36th PAF bridge would be a good combination

  • @FreightlinerTrukinCl

Yes, depending on the sound you have in mind.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Hi Larry, I've been looking at these pickups for a long time, to replace a Super Distortion in the bridge and a stock neck pickup in my Les Paul. Although the SD is a fantastic pickup, when combined with my heavy approach and thick string gauge, it can be a little too much with my already overdriven amp. I want something fatter, warmer but cleaner, with more clarity but not something too weak, basically classic but with balls. Any thoughts? Jack

  • @METALHEAD5396

A Norton might be good in terms of clarity. I don't think you'll be able to have the sound be a lot fatter as well, but that will result in less clarity.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thanks for the advice, I took the chance and bought the PAF set and couldn't be happier. The perfect combination!

  • i have a question I have a Dimarzio X2N in the bridge of my ibanez S i want to put a nice good neck pickup thats generally good for blues and has a well round sound, smooth and almost flowing.. would The 36th An. PAF be good any sugestions?? im trying to achieve the most versatile guitar.. but my forte is mostly blues, jazz, rock and sometimes metal

  • @jpjdo1212

I think you will get good results with either an F-spaced LiquiFire or Breed neck model. They are both a little louder than the PAF, and will balance better with the X2N.

  • Hi mr. DiMarzio. I really like your pickups.

The last one I had was a DP-155 but I sold it because it was too noisy for my taste. I now use a Peavey Alnico humbucker from an Peavey Vandenberg (1988).

It's an extremely good pickup but the base/back is made out of plastic.

I've always wondered, why do Seymour Duncan pickups sound so much brighter than yours and does a LP-player like Slash seem to prefer them?

Do you also sell a bright and harmonic pickup who could replace my plastic Peavey?

  • @MrDunkJunk

I guess you aren't familiar with all of our pickups. The EJ Custom neck model and the Humbucker From Hell are very bright pickups (and much brighter than the pickups Slash uses). I'm not familiar with the specs of the Peavey pickup, but it sounds like you might like an Air Classic bridge model.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you for your response. The Peavey pickup sounds a lot like your PAF Pro only less powerfull. I like the pickup because it is very quiet, not EMG quiet but it does purify my tone from other noises. An Air Classic sounds like a good choice, I'm also familliar with your Tone Zone pickup which is also a nice pickup. Do you also have a suggestion for a neck pickup? I now use a Rockfield Mafia (a bad pickup which focusses to much on the bass notes and sounds very ''death metal'').

  • @MrDunkJunk

An Air Classic neck model should be good in the neck position.

  • Larry, thanks for the reco! I put in a bridge 36th Anniversary, double cream pickup, in my 1979Cherry Burst Les Paul Custom last night and it sounds AWESOME! Wow! The reeal sound of the guitar has been unleashed. When I purchased it in 1985, it had a broken Super Distortion in the bridge. I replaced it with an Al DiMeola Pickup (on reco) that year and have never been really happy with it. Now the guitar sounds and plays like a true vintage instrument. Thank you!

  • Larry Rocks and always has. Remember first meeting him in 1971 or 1972 when he was winding 'em himself in the "little shop" at Port Richmond and even on his apartment kitchen table in St. George. He's a fabulous guitarist as well as pick-up designer et. al.... In the day Larry taught me how to bend a note like EC, Jeff Beck and Billy Gibbons. I'll be forever grateful. His pick ups are smokin' hot. --- ---johnnyguitar335

  • Hey Larry

Got an air zone a year ago for my Japan Jackson in the rear. It sounded great then and now has settled in and really has a cool open personality.

I recommend Dimazio's to all my students who love em too!

    Thanks mate.

  • Can you explain how the plating system is "more magnetically transparent" please.

Nickel plating is nickel plating. The magnetic permeability difference of 95% nickel vs 92% is negligable at best.

    Just curious.

  • @JgHaverty

The thickness of the plating is critical. We've examined many covers with relatively thick plating and markedly different performance than ours. The most transparent performance is achieved with unplated covers, which we also offer as a standard option.

  • @LarryDiMarzio you could have just used a slightly stronger magnet :D Do you guys ever experiment with neodymium? airbucker modded neodymium core with enameled copper windings... I get chills thinking about it :)

  • @JgHaverty Thanks for your input. DiMarzio is always trying new combinations of material. And yes, our new Angel Acoustic pickup uses rare-earth magnets. However, we haven't liked the result in the electric guitar line up yet.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio is it a "too much" sound? Heck, you guys have the best pickups out there, Im not about to tell you what to do :D Im just a scientist type that has to over analyze everything. ALL of my guitars use dimarzio pickups (well, except my strat, but thats a different thing :p), and for good reason.

If you make a higher output tone zone, lemme know :)

  • @JgHaverty Hi, Thanks for using DiMarzio. From a science point of view there are lots of things about guitars and amps that should sound good if you look at specks, etc. The problem is that it doesn't work out that way all the time.

We are experimenting with the Tone Zone now for Rob Cagganio.

    All the best

    Larry

  • @LarryDiMarzio Yeah I've noticed that when I play with them lol. I put a ceramic magnet under your tone zone, and it came out suprisingly well. Give it a try ;) (if you havent already haha). It had a little more top end then I wanted, but probably something you could fix with less coils of wire perhaps. I dunno, mathematically, tone of a pickup theoretically SHOULD be an exact science :D

  • Hi Larry ! I ordered a set of these 36th Aniv. pickups a couple weeks ago, dropped them in and was simply AMAZED at the sounds they produce. I've been a DiMarzio pickup user for the last 30 years, and each new model you come out with is always a winner ! Thanks for bringing back a classic PAF !

  • are these 2 or 4 conductor pups?

  • @newking70 available as single of 4 conductor pickups.

  • @JgHaverty Hi, Yes, you can get 4 conductor wiring or vintage style. Please check out dimarzio.com for more options.

    All the best,

    Larry

  • Hi Larry, I am currently shopping for PAF pickups for my hollowbody lp but there are so many out there. I was wondering if you can help me narrow it down by telling me why your 36th Anniversary PAF is better than the competition out there such as Klein, Throback, Bareknuckle Mule, and the Seymour Duncan's Seth Lovers to name a few. I would be extremely grateful to hear your honest opinion. Thanks!

  • @thecrow780

That's a pretty impossible question to answer easily. I'll just say that we could have made pickups that were exact duplicates of the originals, but that wouldn't have represented who we are. These pickups sound and feel good when I play them, and that's always been what matters to me. .

  • hi larry i have an ibanez rg with a floyd rose style tremelo, basswood body and maple neck and need to decide on what pickups to get. i mainly play instumental rock like satch and vai but my band sometimes also plays death metal and we tune down. im looking for a fairly high output pear of pickups and with fair amount of distortion but also a nice clean sound...so quite versatile if u could recommend a few models i would be extremely grateful.

  • @robosvideos

Either an F-spaced Evo 2 or Crunch Lab in the bridge position and an F-spaced Evolution neck model in the neck might be a good set.

  • Tried the Gibson 57 Classics in my Les Paul - too harsh. These are much better, and for a lot less money.

  • hmm anybody know how these would sound on an sg?

  • @eerahman

The neck position is very smooth-sounding. The bridge position doesn't have nearly as much authority as it does in a Les Paul, but it's very articulate, and you can run a lot of amp gain without getting a muddy sound.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks....well so what would you recomend within the dimarzio brand for a good sg pickup combination mainly for versitality/classic gibson sound

  • @eerahman

I'm not certain that versatility and a classic Gibson sound would call for the same pickups. I recommend emailing us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the music you play and the type of amp you use, so we can offer the best recommendations.

  • Mr. DiMarzio

would you consider giving your audience/consumers a better sample of your pick upI.sounds rather then the usual shred grouping? Not everyone out here plays that and if you are only appealing to a younger crowd then I am sure there are a lot of other distributors out there to choose from.

  • @CDNBOBify

We're currently doing major revisions on our website, which will include a wider range of sound clips. However, I think there are a fair number of clips on our site that don't fall into the shred category, by players who aren't members of the younger crowd (although they'd probably be happy to be included in that group as well).

  • Why don't you scatterwound it like the original? '59 PAF pickups all sound so different and organic because of their sloppy wiring. If you'd just build it with the same ingredients and process it would be a real PAF? Maybe even degauss the magnets. Why are all the major p/u builders trying to replace crafstmanship with computers? Analog all the way! Grtz,

    Laurens

  • @lauriedepaurie

We're interested in making the best-sounding pickups we can, and we're interested in making them consistently. Computers have not taken the place of craftsmanship in our shop, as anyone who's visited it can tell you. We've been doing pickup research for over 35 years, and we feel strongly about using what we've learned instead of simply imitating the work of others.

  • The original paf pick ups in your gibson les paul 59 were alnico 5?

  • do dimarzio have alnico 2 version of this, if is there is one please let me know

  • @nochi969286

There is no need for an Alnico 2 version, because the magnetic field of the 36th Anniversary PAF was designed to function the same way, and using Alnico 5 instead produces more stable results.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you Mr. DiMarzio for making these pickups they are incredible

  • I opted for an Air Classic (n) & 36th PAF (b) to replace the too trebly/ bassy '59s in my old ES-335. Steve Blucher was right! This combination is versatile and great for British-Invasion cleans to up to 70s classic rock tones. Wonderful mids with the 36th PAF.

  • do you make these but in a P90' s form ?? i could change them in my Gibson classic

  • do you make these but in a P90' s form ?? i could change them in my SG clasic

  • @AlochEX

We don't, but it's on our list of upcoming projects.

  • @LarryDimarzio Hey Larry, I'm planning on installing some DiMarzios in my '91 Les Paul, and I'm set on having a covered 36th Anniversary in the neck position, but I'm toying around with some ideas as to what to put in the bridge. I recently installed one of these and a Norton in the neck and bridge of my Hamer, but I'm not sure if that'd be the best combo for my GIbson.

  • @sXeSnowmansXe

It depends on the sound you want, and you didn't say what that is. Email us at tech@dimarzio.com with a description of what you're looking for & we'' give you some good suggestions..

  • Hey larry, I love the sound of your 36th Anniversary. Is there any combination you'd recommened in order to get that Jimmy Page tone out of my guitar? Also, Should I place the 36th PAF on the neck or bridge? It doesn't have to be an exact tone I'd just like your recommendation.

  • @xXXPrinceAlbertXXx

Go to our website and you will see that the 36th Anniversary PAF is available in standard and bridge models (DP103 & DP223). You didn't say what type of guitar you have, but the normal recommendation would be a DP103 in the neck and DP223 in the bridge position.

  • Whats the sound difference of a PAF and PAF 36th anniversary? And would pairing a PAF 36th anniversary in the neck and a Super Distortion in the bridge be a good idea?

  • @theamericanpsycho79

Our original model from the late 1970s was called the PAF. Some players have also shortened the full name of the PAF 36th Anniversary models to PAF, since it's our current version.

A PAF 36th in the neck and Super Distortion in the bridge should be perfectly OK, although of course it depends on the sound you're looking for.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I play a lot of Ozzy and 80s metal, I ruin my guitar signal through an MXR Distortion + and MXR 10 Band EQ into a 1978 Marshall JMP 2204. I am guessing it would sound perfect for my playing style and help me perfectly achieve the should I am looking for.

  • @theamericanpsycho79

It's impossible to say in advance that it would be perfect, but I can say it should be a good choice.

  • @LarryDiMarzio thanks Larry, I am going for it!

  • I just ordered a set for my Carvin SC90. Considering that A2 works well with alder and these are voiced like A2's I suspect that they will be a good combination. I'm looking forward to installing them.

  • Hi Larry,

Your 36th Anniversary PAF's are very tempting indeed! Can I order a set with out WAX?

  • Will a 36th PAF and a Liquifire on a PRS be a good combination?

  • @pompa98

Yes, if you're putting the LiquiFire in the bridge position and PAF in the neck.

  • Just wondering, what would an Ibanez S sound like if you put a pair of 36th anniv. PAFs in there?

  • @yazonkyoudai

Thee won't be as much low-end response as with a Les Paul, but the mids should be solid and the highs shouldn't be too thin.

  • @LarryDiMarzio I see. Thanks for the info!

  • LarryDiMarzio what pickups do you yhink are good for a jimmy page soun??

  • he sounds like the Yoda in guitar. :)

  • @ArthursChannel it depends on the guitar, but the 36th Anniversary PAFs are a good choice to start with.

  • i just bought a new les paul with a 57 clssic and a burstbucker 3. but they hum like crazy, are your new paf pickups completely quiet when your not touching a string?

  • @muscletruckdude Hi, Yes, the DiMarzio pickups are humbucking and very quiet but from your description I think you have a grounding problem with your guitar. I suggest go back to the store, contacting Gibson or take it to repair shop.

    Hope that helps,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • @LarryDiMarzio thank you very much.

  • @muscletruckdude

Are you sure you're not confusing pickup "squeel" vs. "hum?" Humbuckers don't hum - thus the name. If you use low output humbuckers with high gain amps, you will get feedback regardless of potting. Just my 2 cents.

  • @Nytan01 That isn't entirely true. No humbucker cancels 100% of the hum, and some models are noisier than others. And a properly-potted low output pickup shouldn't squeal with a high-gain amp.

  • @LarryDiMarzio

Haha, I've been told. Never argue against Larry. He knows his stuff. Any chance of putting out an Alnico II PAF? I've been waiting for something comparable to Duncan's offering. Too many "Slash" models out there.

  • @Nytan01

One of the cool things about the 36th Anniv. PAF is that it uses an Alnico V magnet but basically performs like a pickup with an Alnico II magnet. Alnico V is more stable & reliable, so that's what we prefer to use when possible.

  • My 81 Tokai Love Rock came with US Dimarzio. I wonder those are the original Dimargio pafs

  • hi larry congratulations for really good work the best pick up i play in years the sound its really good

  • fai schifo come pepsca comunista di merda

  • Out of left field questions. Would you know what kind of magnets were used in '74 LP Custom? Which in line would come closest?

  • @PrsFenderJackson1980

I'm not 100% certain, but almost positive it was Alnico 5. Our 36th Anniversary PAF (DP103) isn't identical, but should work well in yout guitar.

  • Hey Larry, I have a question for ya:

What do you think of the Gibson 57's as opposed to your 36th Ann. PAF's?

  • @ZepIV

I think they're pretty different in terms of tone. Our Air Classic models are closer to the 57s.,

  • @LarryDiMarzio Sir, U mean, The Vintage Set or The Classic Rock Set of The 36th Anniversary Series.

  • @helldx07 The Classic Rock set consists of a 36th Anniv. PAF in the neck position and a Super Distortion in the bridge position. The Vintage Set has 2 PAFs. The Air Classic neck and bridge models are not in either set. You can see a complete description of them on our website.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you, Sir.

  • is the neck model of the PAF 36 anniversary a good bridge pickup for the humbucker from hell as a neck pickup?

  • @wuwei5150

    Yes, it should be OK.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you sir!

  • is the neck model of the PAF 36 anniversary a good bridge pickup for the humbucker from hell?

  • Hey Larry, I have a Strat with a SD S, a Chopper and an Air Norton S installed.

While the Super Distortion in the bridge just holds the tone forever, the sustain of the Air Norton is more than meh-ish. Holds the note for about 5 secs and then just dies down without fading.

Any cure for that? Using .10-.46 Daddario Strings with a Schaller Floyd Rose.

  • @Mustang1204

It's hard to offer an opinion without being in the room & hearing the guitar, but sustain comes from the combination of the guitar, pickup and amp. The SD is louder than the AN, and it may be driving the amp harder. You might try adjusting the AN a little closer to the strings if there's enough distance between them to work with.

  • @LarryDiMarzio

    Thanks, will try that.

  • Hi larry,

I have a custom tele with SSH routings and i wanted to choose dimarzio pickups that can play everything, what would you recommend?

  • @nung1009

It's hard to recommend pickups without a lot more information to go on. Please email tech@dimarzio.com with a description of the guitar, amp, and whether you want true single-coils or humcancelling pickups.

  • Hello Larry, I am thinking about replacing my 72 Thinline stock humbuckers with a set of these. How do you think they will sound with the hollybody. Also which set do you reccomend for this paticular guitar.

  • @lboyd2506

They might work well in this guitar, but it's impossible to make a recommendation without knowing what sound you're looking for. Drop an email to tech@dimarzio.com & we should be able to recommend the right pickups.

  • Hey Larry, seems that those are a great pair of pickups... are they wax poted ?... i want to buy this set cause my set of Duncans SH-1 and SH-6 seems to be more noisy than most humbuckers i have seen... how the 36th aniv PAF behave against the hum in mid gain to high gain settings ?... The duncans bring some noise even with noise gates !

  • @erikmilan1987

All of our humbuckers are wax potted. I think they behave well with high gain settings, but keep in mind that amps and effects can contribute to the overall noise level, and high gain makes everything very sensitive.

  • Hi Larry,

I currently have a 58 Les Paul VOS with Burstbuckers. My Burstbucker neck is kind of on the muddy side. Do theses pickups sound different than the Burstbuckers or are they very similar in tonal pallet? Very interested but a little confused.

  • @ykcor1138

I think our PAF is less muddy, but if you really need to lose the mud, you might check out the Air Classic neck model. It has good chime for a neck pickup.

  • Hello Larry,

Is the 36th anniversary PAF available in Nickel, for bridge and neck? I don't find them here in Germany and I REALLY want to stick to DiMarzio since I really love the SD S, Chopper S and Air Norton S I have in my Strat.

They say once DiMarzio, always DiMarzio.

  • @Mustang1204

It is available with a nickel cover in both standard and F-spacing. You might try contacting Sound Service, our distributor in Germany. Their email address is info@sound-service.eu

  • I'm considering Tele Pickups. I like the Twang Kings but have read a review that says True Velvets are everything you want out of Twang Kings and nothing you don't.

If it's not apparent I'm looking at a country guitar. I'm gonna try swamp ash with quilt maple. What are your thoughts on the Twang King to True Velvet thing?

  • @GuillermoSmyser

The Twang Kings have more actual "twang" than the True Velvet, and will probably be the best choice for a good country sound.

  • @LarryDiMarzio Thank you so much. I really appreciate it! Your pickups are amazing and I am so impressed that you take the time to respond to us. If this isn't actually Larry Dimarzio himself I still really appreciate hearing from someone who knows.

I really didn't know anything about the true velvets.

  • @GuillermoSmyser Hi, Glad to be of help and thanks for your kind words.

    All the best,

    Larry DiMarzio

  • Just to clarify, long/short legs refers to the height of the legs? So a short leg pickup would sit lower in the ring?

  • Would these pickups be a good match for a Neck-Thru Explorer-Type Guitar (Full Mahagoni) ?

  • @gacktology

Yes, although of course it depends on the sound you're looking for.

  • Mr. DiMarzio, what would be the (tonal) difference between the 36th ann. PAF and the Air Classic? And could you explain to me what is the technique behind the AirBuckers? Grazie mille.

  • @goldeneagle701

The PAF has smoother mids and treble, while the Air Classic has more chime. An airbucker has a gap between the magnet and the polepieces, which reduces the magnetic field over the pickup.

  • I wanted to know which pickups would better fit the led zeppelin tone im looking for, which pups do you recommend??

  • @sonoranguitarlois

I recommend the 36th Anniv. PAFs for the classic Les Paul sound most often associated with Zeppelin, but pickup choice will also depend on the specific guitar and amp you have.

  • Mr. DiMarzio: I'm after a vintage-voiced HBer replacement set for my ES-335. Would your 36th Anniversaries be good for Beatles & 'Stones music? Thanks, Larry

  • Mr. DiMarzio: Would your 36th P/Us be a good fit for Beatles & 'Stones music in my ES-335? (I don't want high-octane output) BTW, your Twang Kings are the best and I often say so in numerous forums. Thanks, Larry

  • You might do better with the Air Classic neck and bridge models to get the sound you're going for with a 335.

  • Can't wait for mine to come in!!! Great pickup Dr. Larry if I may ;)... Jamie Humphrie makes these bad boys sing!!

  • Hi, Mr. Dimarzio! I'm thinking about changing the pickups on my Ibanez JTK 40. But I don't know to which ones I could change them for.

I'm looking for a pair of chrome plated Humbuckers. I need their sound to be crystal clear, but also I don't want them to get muddy with distortion. I think the best person who can recommend me something is you. So what would you recommend me?

thanks for your time and for making such amazing work.

  • Hi, Mr DiMarzio! I really like your pickups.

I got a question. I got an Ibanez Jet King 40, and I'm looking for a really versatile nickel plated humbuckers, which dosn't get muddy with distortion, but I want them to be crystal clear on the cleans. I thought you would be the best person who could recommend me something. Thanks for your time, and for you excelent work!

  • Hi Larry... I am building a Fat Strat and was wondering if this PAF 36th F-Spaced is a good choice for a Strat Humbucker in the bridge position. Thanks!

  • why F spaced?

  • Because the polepieces will align better with the strings than they will with a standard-spaced pickup. Standard spacing is too narrow.

  • I never knew that...I assumed F spaced pickups were for models of guitars that used a floyd rose style bridge. Thanks for the info :)

  • Hey, I was thinking of either getting a pair of 36's or an air norton in the neck and a norton in the bridge. I'm looking for a modern voice with clarity, a little bite, good harmonics, tone, a good amount of output without being distorted and sustain. Simply put, I'm mostly looking for versatility. What pickups do you think I should go for?

  • Actually, you might look at Joe Satriani's pickups - PAF Joe in the neck and Mo' Joe in the bridge. They work very well in a Les Paul.

  • thank you very much Mr. Dimarzio. I appreciate the advice :)

  • say, I'm considering swapping out the pickups in my les paul. They're a burstbucker 3 and 57 classic. They get a fairly good tone, but the sustain is not good and i struggle to get harmonics. I was thinking about either getting a pair of PAF 36's or an Air Norton in the neck and a Norton in the bridge. I'm looking for pickups with a more modern voice, versaitility, good harmonics, and clarity. What do you think?

  • im planning to use burstbucker 2 in the neck and burstbucker 3 for the bridge pickup to to atleast make it sound like a 1959 les paul but after seeing this vid it got me thinking which is the better pickup to get the sound of a 59 les paul..
