  • Also, when motion tracking, you should probably bump up the shutter speed, just sayin

  • Hey, at 24p i cannot set shutter speed to 1/50, but 1/48. I guess that's how they made it though since 48 is the double of 24, so will this be ok? :)

  • Thanks so much! Now i can check shutter speed off of my list!! Since i shoot at 24fps i will keep it on 5o and worry about iso and aperture.

  • Does this work for the t1i?

  • NEED HELP!! ANYBODY!! i dont know how to SET the shutter speed when in video mode... i can do it in the picture parts of the camera but not in the movie mode

  • @KinsTV Your video capture mode is probably in Auto mode. Go to your Menu and change it to Manual.

  • That tripod and head cost two times the T2i

  • @DeSpark89 It is most likely because lights run at 50hz. Try shooting at 25 or 24 frames per second.

  • where did you get that get up for the rebel t2i? the lens cap hood and view finder?

  • very informative, thanks!

  • how do u adjust the shutter speed?

  • @BradLewandowski read your manual

  • how to a lock it to that shutter speed!?!?!?

  • @jacobasghar just change your shutter by using the dial and it won't auto change

  • Little tip here, thumbs up so people can see :)

when shooting at 25fps or 60fps or any fps (frames per second) The shutter speed should be double that, so for 25fps it should be 1/50 shutter speed and 60fps 1/120. This is to achieve the "normal" motion blur look. High shutter speeds in films like 28 days laters and saving private ryan are used in creative ways, if your not looking for every shot to be creative, i'd stick to the "normal" shutter speeds.

  • @ChuckyTrance You need to have installed "custom firmware" the Magic Lantern to change those setting on camera.

  • but how can I change it?

  • this guys and idiot, for 60p it should be 120th/s.

  • I had this problem in my first movie shot with the Canon 550D, last week. I searched the internet for days and never found anything about how to solve this, until now!! Thanks a lot. =)

  • @timoisdabomb A matte box, it's like a very big sun cap.

  • on a real camera (film camera) the shutter is determined by how fast the film is cranked. as the shutter is at a 180 degree angle this means that at 24fps the shutter is 1/48th of a second and if overcranked to 48fps the shutter will be 1/96th of a second. On a DSLR/video cam for 24fp/ 25fps the nearsest you'll get is 1/50th a second and for 60p it should be 1/120th and for 50p 1/100th of a second. You generally double what ever the frame rate is. He's full of it.

  • @charvelgtrs, a really fast shutter looks like shit for just about anything, because it's unnatural and not how the human eye actually perceives motion. Unless you're Steven Spielberg, you probably can't pull it off without it looking weird/like shit.

  • The shutter speed comment is bullshit. It really depends on what you are going to do with your footage. If I need to motion track a certain shot, or if I want to slow down my footage a lot (with twixtor for example) it is best to go for a high shutter speed due to less motion blur.

  • Great Job, Thanks.

  • But for some super slow motion fun

ur going to need a very high shutter speed like 1/1000

  • NOT TRUE

  • I have no idea what is going on in this video. Can you explain? I'm trying to understand shutter but since i'm starting from zero, this video didn't really help me.

  • No insight in dslr-filming.!

Shutterspeed at 1/1000-1/4000 is also very usefull if you want to do post-slowmotion on fast moving objects. This is because each frame is individually sharper and it's easier for the algorithms in fx. Twixtor to calculate the in-between frames position = more precise and smooth slowmotion.

    Thought I was joke!

  • Yesterday i got my Røde Videomic, i was so happy for have bought it, and i was like "i'm going pro today". But when I found out about the problem, I was very angry, because I didn't research on it, as I normally do... I was ready to throw the videomic out of my window, but then i found "Magic Lantern", on a random site about the 5D. I scroll down at the site and found out it was also available for the 550d. My eyes was filled with tears :'D! I'll never go back to the normal Firmware! NEVER!

  • use 1/50 for 24/25p, but use 1/120 for 60p. general rule of thumb is multiply your frame rate by 2 and that is your shutter.

  • what kind of lense it s that on the front

  • Very good video.

  • Thats an awsome microphone I want one for my next video!!!

  • great video thanks!

  • what matte did he use

  • Don't listen to him when he says to never use a really fast shutter. If you want to get that Saving Private Ryan motion effect then a fast shudder is needed. Actually, a fast shudder looks great with just about every action scene. Makes things look more intense.

  • @charvelgtrs it really depends on what look you want. if you want that look then fine, if you don't then fine also. It's all subjective really.

  • @charvelgtrs yeah this guy is clearly making lame movies no one wants to see..

  • @charvelgtrs What i don't understand, is how the shutter speed is different from the frame rate... any quick explanation?

  • @Buhzie15

In video terms shutter speed is how long the sensor is able to build a charge per second to capture light. Frame rate does not affect exposure, but how many frames per second of motion you will capture. Each framerate works best with a specific shutter speed settings to achieve natural looking motion.

24p is what they use in movies, 30p is what most consumer camcorders shoot at and 60p is what they use in the News and Sporting events.

  • @charvelgtrs right.. there are never any do's or donts with film. if it gives you the look you want, do it.

  • @charvelgtrs He doenst say to never use it - he gives you a hint to avoid some issues, man. Incredible like 32 others cant interpret wisely whats he saying. Thats amazing.

  • @charvelgtrs also if you like to motion track your shot later and you used a low shutter speed, there will be much motion blur which makes it nearly impossible to track anything. so keep this in mind too.

  • @charvelgtrs What are the best settings for the 18-55 lens? I'm confused with 1/50 and 1/60 in here.

  • @KoSoVaAnGeL

It doesn't matter what lens you use.

  • @charvelgtrs The thing is I am having a lot of noise. I would like to know what is the max iso I should use not to have noise in video when shooting at low light. I know above 400 will not be good. How about the shutter speed and aperture?

    Thanks

  • @KoSoVaAnGeL

I shoot up to ISO 1600 without a problem. Though, if you want better low-light video than get yourself a prime lens like a 50mm 1.8. The standard shutter speed settings is 1/50th for 24fps and 1/60th for 30fps.

  • @charvelgtrs shutter

  • @MrRaptur3

    ???

  • @charvelgtrs I think you misunderstood. He's referring to people using fast shutter speeds for general movie shots. But you are right, it really depends on the scene and what style you are going for. IMO, people overuse that cranked shutter speed style that it becomes distracting when utilized in a dialogue scenes where simple composition would suffice.

  • @charvelgtrs How do I set a high shutter speed in movie mode on the t2i? And you're right. For every fight scene I shoot its - 1/150 and up.

  • what mattebok is that canon using?

  • very helpful .. thanks!!

  • wow great stuff thanks... think im actually gonna learn something now instead of scratching my head at peoples results haha.

  • 60p would be better with 125 shutter speed

  • I bought my first DSLR which is canon 550d/T2i, When I put it into the shutter mode to freeze a moving object it gives a dark picture, I am using the kit lens 18-55mm, do I need to change my lens? can anyone help me with it?

  • @kalibreadagru

get into a place with more light, raise the iso or the aperture. That's what happens when you raise the shutter speed with any camera. light goes away when you increase the shutter speed.

  • @BenHughesStudios

thank you for adding to my knowledge

  • how do u get 60p?

  • @DeckDiaries With the update

  • @DeckDiaries - On the T2i (550D), the way to get 60p is only in 720p mode. You cannot get 60p in 1080p mode.

  • @INTERNATIONALvids haha you right dawg

  • Really great!

But how do I adjust the shutter speed in movie mode? I can't figure it out!

  • @ra81haxa

You just scroll the wheel on top of the camera. It's really simple. You should read the manual.

  • the turning knob thing, i had the same problem...in 30fp it can't go less then 60 so turn the knob thing right...

  • @ra81haxa same dude

  • nice to see you again sir! its been a while! thanks for your 50D video, im now in command of my 50D!
