  • Aww good for you! ^_^

It's nice to see people out there like you, reafirms my beliefs in humanity.

  • @GingaUiido24 Thanks :-) They're amazing birds, and it's sad when you see them in distress, so you just have to help...

  • @mikepepler yes, many people assume they are just seagulls.. but I think they're gorgeous, intelligent and family-dedicated birds.

I was raised in a fishing town where everyone sees them as vermin, so I saw them as just that for years.. until my mother and I went out for a day and found one atop a roof tangled in wires. Needless to say, I was so sad. I assumed it would choke there, until I noticed another gull tugging at the wires to try and free his friend (which he eventually succeeded in)

  • @GingaUiido24 Maybe the other bird was its mate?

The most impressive gull "group defence" I saw was when I was trying to catch a baby one that had fallen off the roof, to get it back up there. There were 50+ gulls circling over me, shouting. Then a cat came from under a car to stalk the baby - one of the circling gulls (and NOT the chick's parent, as it was a different species), came down like a missile! I've never seen a cat run so fast! :-)

  • @mikepepler yes it could well have been. Afterall, it was an urban breeding colony - little puff-ball chicks stumbling around with them.

Yup, that's why I love gulls, they have such a strict dedication to eachother. Although they seem to have a society where the injured play no role - I witnessed a herring gull ripping at another one in the harbour water and then attempting to drown it. The attack was relentless, but my granda told me that they kill eachother if the other is suffering enough.

  • why didn't it just fly out..

  • @goldenchessboard They don't understand glass, so they keep trying to get out through the windows at the ends. Sometimes when you climb up there they do fly out in terror, but they have to go along the balcony to get enough run up to take off.

  • Gulls are large birds, and not all of them can alight straight up. Older, more mature gulls can alight over this, but this one, perhaps is still young. Thank you so much for posting and helping this gull. It made me feel very good to seee this. Thank you again!

  • It's nice to see someone cares enough for these lovely animals to save them. Good job!

  • i think gulls like that one need a bit of a running start to get air borne. I have never seen a gull leap into the air like a small bird without the wind blowing to aid them.

  • @6V92TA I have seen certain gulls alight straight up several feet, but I suppose they learn this, and not all gulls have the same intelligence level.

  • @mariojragucci2 I can understand the intelligence part really. Ive never seen a gull alight straight up without the wind blowin. I really miss these birds. We dont have them here in Atlanta. Grew up with them in Cleveland, Ohio. I miss that constant squawking and fighting they do in the Spring and Summer.
