Quality of voice work is up to more than just the actors. Games like Assassin's Creed, Max Payne, or Wad of Gore have more effort put into it than a game that was made elsewhere and just needs to be voiced over for the sake of consumers' xenophonophobia.
That said, XII really had an outstanding dub. Maybe it had to do with the near absence of emo, but whatever they did different with this title, i wish they did it always.
Balthier's English VA alone makes the English version better.
He is just that much more badass!
Also, Fran's (as well as the other Vierra) accent in the English version really adds to the notion that the Vierra are a different species than the Hume. It adds to the world's realism.
Of course, she also sounds really sexy, but that's just a plus. =p
Square Enix has a tendency contradict one of the horrors of localization: Screwed up voice dubbing. Except for Fran, I prefer the English voices. Basch's, I think, is quite well done in english!
I've always enjoyed Gideon Emery's Balthier. But there's something about that Japanese voice...It just feels like the role of a pirate, coupled with that voice, fit to make one piece of coolness.
i think this is the one and only time that I'll say, with confidence, that the english voice acting is even better than the japanese. top notch voice actors all round. shame there wasn't much character development in ffxii, could've been something special
Balthier and Vaan sound alot older in the Japanese VA
larsa's Japanese VA is cute haha , aw too bad there wasn't an option to just have both in a toggle on/off kinda thing....like the .Hack games did. Maybe then there wouldn't be so much arguments over which is better.
I think one reason the English voices fit the characters better is because the game has a medieval-ish setting. I mean 10 had western and eastern qualities so both the English and Japanese suited the characters. At least that's what I think.
Japanese Fran got a generic "mature soft-voiced woman" voice. Boring. :(
English Fran got the sexiest voice I've ever heard.
Also, another fun voice comparison that wasn't in this vid: The guards who are after Vaan at the start of the game speaks in a cockney accent in the english verions and the distinct yakuza way of talking in the japanese version - clever dubbing, since both speeches are known from sounding rough and vulgar, and are (stereotypically) spoken by thugs.
Usually, I really like the Japanese dub. But this time, there's no doubt that the English version is faaaaaaar better! Especially Balthier's voice by Gideon Emery, just perfect! ♥ The Japanese voice doesn't fit him at all! He's a seducer (EN), not a couch potato (JP) >o<
I've never been a big fan of english dubs but I have to say that the english voice acting for ff12 is really superb. each character - especially fran and balthier, have voices that not only match their characters, but also help to build their characters.
WOAH. O.o on my phone it can't pronounce the hap. Ones (it just has loads of computereh noises xD ), whitch is suprising considering its a smartphone ....
Larsa: Both versions are good. English voice fits his appearance, and make him look like a fearless warrior. Japanese version fits his age and childish character.
Usually i like jap but this time i prefer the eng. I was iching to hear ashe's voice in jap i really liked it, other characters i prefer eng. I love the game soo different from all other FF games.
Hm... I prefer Penelo and Larsa's voices in Japanese. Sounds more appropriate to me... the other characters sound better in English in my opinion. Thanks for the vid, it was really inhteresting :)
@DXXDgame you weeaboo a retarded asshole who thinks japanese voices are better even though you can obviously the english voices are better and tell me how do you know that japanese va are better if ITS NOT EVEN IN YOUR OWN FUCKING LANGUAGE you can't tell that a seriyu is good or bad. so your a dumbass and goodbye
@TurboBabyPuncher you stupid... how old are you think that Fran actually have? eng voice isn`t apropriate for her. It sounds like she is some kind of bitch in california beach. anyway, her jap voice is more apropriate for her mysterious age and her personality.
I gues that my western ears can't sense variety on the japanese voice cast. I prefer the english voice for all characters because they did well in showing each character's singularity. That's kind strange because I wacth a lot animes and i'm used to hear japanese voice dubs, but in this video they look almost all the same. And the english cast succeed in exalt the youth of Vaan and Penelo, the astuteness and cleverness of Balthier, the bravery and maturity of Basch...
Balthier: English!!!! Gideon Emery IS Balthier!! Seriously... he is a bit like his character in person. lol. A really amazing guy. Anyway!
Fran: English, Both are good but Nicole I feel adds more mystery to Fran.
Basch: English
Ashe: English. Kari is an AMAZING person! I was lucky enough to spend a day with her for a high school project. She is really wonderful at her craft and I respect her a lot.
Final Fantasy XII may not be my favorite Final Fantasy, but the english voice acting was awsome. I perfer all the english voice acting over the japanese, especially Ashe.
Vaan japanese, Balthier english, Fran english, Bash japanese, Penelo english, Larsa japanese (fits more to the age.), and I like Ashe only when she's silent - so you don't notice her at all, she doesn't deserve attention. :\

I'm for the Japanese voices, considering I watch Japanese Anime alot, and I discovered that the lip sync was off like crazy, and that bothered me. Larsa sounds older, which I like since he doesn't seem 12 to me Dx. Balthier I liked in English since I view him as an awesome kick-ass British Sky Pirate.
english voices sounds better. i have to admit even though i did not like this game, it has the best voice acting in any final fantasy game....voice acting in ff13 is a joke.
I actually like Basch voice in Japanese, Larsa too^^
Balthier is definately better in English, he is forever the suave British pirate in my eyes. Penelo sounds too boy-ish in Japanese and Ashe sounds like the typical annoying-japanese-girl. In conclusion the English voices are better:)
I guess you really can't account for taste. Fran's VA made me want to stab myself in the ears everytime I heard her, but loads of people seem to love her. Her seiyuu is quite good though.
The english audio was horrible in general. It was so obviously STUDIO, it bothered me from the very first minute I played the game. And I never got used to it either. That's probably another reason why I played this game only once.
The English voices go perfect with this game, especially since it's in a more European setting (like Vagrant Story).
What I find most odd, though, is that Fran's voice is more exotic in the English version than the Japanese one. You'd really expect it to be the other way around... I suppose it must be her accent. God the voices in XII are amazing...
I must say that I prefer English far more than Japanese. It fits with the game and the personalities of the characters more. My favorites are probably Ashe, Vaan, Larsa, and Fran.
I think Japanese version was better than English version...except Balthier in english version...my favourite is Basch,Fran,Balthier and Ashe in Japanese version...
Vaan and Balthier have such a good english voice, specially Balthier, his english voice makes him who he is.
I prefer English Basch voice because I can't imagine a knight talking in japanese, it doesn't make sense -.-
The only one I prefer in it's japanese version is Fran.
She is a Viera, they are a tribe who consider themselves better than the other tribes. When I hear the english dub I just hear a teenager being insuportable, Japanese one is more adult.
I like both, but I'd have to go with the English version.
I liked how the English actors differentiated the voices more and it made them all more unique and individual. Because after all most of the main characters came from different parts of Ivalice. Japanese, to me, sounded to similar...but that can because I am used to the english one. I loved them both though!! <3 :DDD
Vaan: Japanese. Bobby Edner doesn't put that much emotion into Vaan's voice. It's like a drone, and sounds like Edner is too close to the recording equipment.
Balthier: English... does anyone need to ask why? Sure it's deep in the original..but..Gideon Emery owned in this.
Fran: English, sounds more mysterious. I love the sort of Icelandic accent it has!
Basch: Both do very well.
Ashe: English. More noble.
Penelo: Both are good, though that the Japanese version suits her more!
Balthier : The English one seemed to have more expression in the way he talked; the accent seemed to also add into the factor. The Japanese one just seemed pretty plain. Kind of like a voice you could hear in just about any other typical anime or something.
Fran : I like both... The Japanese one sounds pretty, and the English one makes her sound more like she belongs in a place like Eruyt Village. More... foreign-like.
Perfeito!
I really.. don't like the Jap voices for this game XD I started in English, staying with english... Jap is okay with DBZ and such, I find it makes them sound funny, especially Goku XD but yeh.. FFXII, best in english... my opinion
ESPECIALLY Balthier. his american voice gives him sooo much classy charm he could kill your whole family and still swoon over him. his Japanese actor is just kinda standard.
American? Hm, well then again, could of easily fooled me.. I can't see any differences between Canadian and American accents >.> except the ones that are just.. much different.
You know, you got to feel a little sorry for the English dubbers. The better that the animation gets, the harder it is for them to fit the English forces to it.
I think that, considering what they had to work with, this was an extraordinary display of dubbing. One of the best I've ever heard.
Still, nothing beats the English dub of FMA. The ladies, they LOVE Vic Mignogna.
Don't take this as a insult, but i always thought Fran's voice sounded like Bjork (not when she is singing, but when talking) Its has that very Icelandic accent.
Oh, and for those of you who say all Japanese voices sound the same, the Japanese say the exact same thing about American voices and accents. The reason the untrained ear can't tell the difference in Japanese accents is because they use slightly different dialects, which ARE included in the Japanese voices on this game.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
English voices DESTROYED this game. It wouldn't have been nearly as soul burning painful to watch if they did something about the dub-lag or gestures and their timing. Not to mention there are times when the American voice actors are clearly trying to cram everything they are intending to say into the time allowed to them. Come on, Square Enix, take the hint from Bandai (never thought I would say that) and namco, give players the ability to switch between the two languages.
I like how diverse the English voices are. You know, how the characters have different accents and whatnot depending on where they come from in the game. It makes it seem more real that way.
And the English voices are better suiting, in my opinion. Balthier, for instance - he sounds like just another guy in the Japanese version, but in English his voice gives him that certain quality that just makes him.
Fran and Larsa have the best English voices.

English voice acting was very good in this game. Japanese acting was, 'eh'. Sounds like pretty much any other anime.

Vaan: I dunno. I seem to like his English voice more for some reason. It just fits him better.
Balthier: English
Fran: English. Accent is great
Basch: English
Ashe: English is cool, but the Japanese one has much more emotion.
Penelo: English
Larsa: English, better accent.
In all, English voices are better in my opinion.

I guess you really can't account for taste. Fran's VA made me want to stab myself in the ears everytime I heard her, but loads of people seem to love her. Her seiyuu is quite good though.

Ashe is a lot better in Japanese to me. (In English, she sounds kinda rough...)
Vaan is awesome in both.
Balthier is better in English.
Don't like Fran either way -.-
Basch is better in English
PENELO JAPANESE FTW!!

The english audio was horrible in general. It was so obviously STUDIO, it bothered me from the very first minute I played the game. And I never got used to it either. That's probably another reason why I played this game only once.

Balthier in english is awaseme!
Same is Fran, bunny, sexy, bitchy ;D
Love them both!
I also like Larsas english

The English voices go perfect with this game, especially since it's in a more European setting (like Vagrant Story).
What I find most odd, though, is that Fran's voice is more exotic in the English version than the Japanese one. You'd really expect it to be the other way around... I suppose it must be her accent. God the voices in XII are amazing...

This is the ONLY (so far) final fantasy that (with voices) were I like the english actors better then the Japanese ones.

I must say that I prefer English far more than Japanese. It fits with the game and the personalities of the characters more. My favorites are probably Ashe, Vaan, Larsa, and Fran.

Is it just me or does Penelo's Japanese voice sound manlier than Larsa's... o_O

Penelo: English sounds more girlie I just like it more
Larsa: English more royal like

Vaan-English. Japanese sounds too old. I feel Bobby Edner really nailed Vaan.
Balthier-English all the way.
Fran-Both of them are really good but English for the mouthwatering Icelandic accent.
Basch-Got to go with Keith Ferguson.
Ashe-English for some reason.
Penelo-Either
Larsa-English all the way. I like that he's a boy in this version.

Balthier: Both, but I like the English one..
Fran: Japanese. Her voice fit with her appearance
Basch: Both....For obvious reasons
Ashe: Both are excellent..I like both of the voice
Penelo: Japanese...cause she sounds freak when in English version
Larsa:Japanese...That's make him fit to his age..The English version I like his way of talking..British accents...<3

Vaan: i can't stand him in English, so yeah, Japanese
Balthier: oh dear lord, make the Japanese version STOP! *cries in a corner*
Fran: Japanese is ok, but i prefer the English version.
Bash: isn't my fav either way, but about equal
Asche: either one really, they're kinda on par with each other
Penelo: if the English was voiced like the Japanese, i wouldn't hate her so much
Larsa: i like both, but the Japanese version reminds me of Ciel from Kuroshitsuji... which is a strange thought for Larsa

Vaan: Both are good, and fit Vaan's "matured teenager" personality well. There are times when both sound aggressive.
Balthier: English, British accent. <3
Fran: Both are good, although I feel Japanese fits her more.
Basch: English, Keith Ferguson never let us down. Japanese
Ashe: Both are good and did a pretty good job.
Penelo: I feel as though English fits her more, but both are very good.
Larsa: Japanese has a good side, and makes him sound more like his age. English is good too.

But in the English version its subtitle is little off than the dub itself..I'm not lying...

I think Japanese version was better than English version...except Balthier in english version...my favourite is Basch,Fran,Balthier and Ashe in Japanese version...

I like the English version better.
When I hear the english dub I just hear a teenager being insuportable, Japanese one is more adult.
silverpotato92 2 years ago 2

Larsa: Both.

I liked the English better. The japanese voices sound too modern. Plus the acting for the Japanese is too simple

The english dub here is a disgrace to the FF series. Not just in terms of actor quality but in terms of audio compression. God I hate dubs.

Vaan: English
Balthier: I love him with an English accent! The Japanese version, because it's deeper, seems to suit him more.
Fran: Japanese for sure.
Basch: both work for me.
Ashe: both work on this one too.
Penelo: English.
Larsa: I thought the English version was a girl! But I do like it better for some reason.
GaaraFan07 2 years ago
Basch : For some reason, I think I like the English one better. :3
Ashe : Ohh, I like both the Japanese *and* English. ♥
Penelo : The English one sounds more childish, in a way, and it seems to fit her character. But I do like the Japanese voice too. ^ ^
Larsa : The English one sounds more royal-like [xD], so it definitely fits with his position. I lurrrv Larsa~ :]

Vaan : I liked both.

I really.. don't like the Jap voices for this game XD I started in English, staying with english...

Don't take this as a insult, but i always thought Fran's voice sounded like Bjork (not when she is singing, but when talking) Its has that very Icelandic accent.

thethirdkira666 2 years ago
Oh, and for those of you who say all Japanese voices sound the same, the Japanese say the exact same thing about American voices and accents. The reason the untrained ear can't tell the difference in Japanese accents is because they use slightly different dialects, which ARE included in the Japanese voices on this game.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
English voices DESTROYED this game. It wouldn't have been nearly as soul burning painful to watch if they did something about the dub-lag or gestures and their timing. Not to mention there are times when the American voice actors are clearly trying to cram everything they are intending to say into the time allowed to them. Come on, Square Enix, take the hint from Bandai (never thought I would say that) and namco, give players the ability to switch between the two languages.
vaughanify 2 years ago
I like how diverse the English voices are. You know, how the characters have different accents and whatnot depending on where they come from in the game. It makes it seem more real that way.
And the English voices are better suiting, in my opinion. Balthier, for instance - he sounds like just another guy in the Japanese version, but in English his voice gives him that certain quality that just makes him.
