  • Fran and Larsa have the best English voices.

  • Quality of voice work is up to more than just the actors. Games like Assassin's Creed, Max Payne, or Wad of Gore have more effort put into it than a game that was made elsewhere and just needs to be voiced over for the sake of consumers' xenophonophobia.

That said, XII really had an outstanding dub. Maybe it had to do with the near absence of emo, but whatever they did different with this title, i wish they did it always.

  • Balthier's English VA alone makes the English version better.

He is just that much more badass!

Also, Fran's (as well as the other Vierra) accent in the English version really adds to the notion that the Vierra are a different species than the Hume. It adds to the world's realism.

Of course, she also sounds really sexy, but that's just a plus. =p

  • Japanese voices are much better.

  • Japanese voice is much better.

  • Yeah, weeaboos usually always prefer Japanese over English. It's funny to think what authorising can happen with a British accent. /facepalm

  • I never knew Kotetsu's voice from the Tiger & Bunny Anime can be so seductive! A natural Han Solo / James Bond personality combined is a bonus!

  • Square Enix has a tendency contradict one of the horrors of localization: Screwed up voice dubbing. Except for Fran, I prefer the English voices. Basch's, I think, is quite well done in english!

  • Larsaaa you so cute! :3

  • I'll never get over how beautiful Hiroaki Hirata's voice is... It makes me want to die.

  • Balthier - WILD TIGER

  • i think they're all great voices and suit the characters equally well in both dubs... but Vaans american voice is better imo

  • Yeah, the dub is PERFECT. Even better than Japanese dub, expecial Larsa and Penelo!

  • THE AMERICAN VOICE FOR VAAN SOUNDS GAAAAAAYYYY!!!

  • I've always enjoyed Gideon Emery's Balthier. But there's something about that Japanese voice...It just feels like the role of a pirate, coupled with that voice, fit to make one piece of coolness.

  • Fran is Sailor Venus!

  • @GraceOh And Basch is Bloo.

  • i think this is the one and only time that I'll say, with confidence, that the english voice acting is even better than the japanese. top notch voice actors all round. shame there wasn't much character development in ffxii, could've been something special

  • both are great imo

Balthier and Vaan sound alot older in the Japanese VA

larsa's Japanese VA is cute haha , aw too bad there wasn't an option to just have both in a toggle on/off kinda thing....like the .Hack games did. Maybe then there wouldn't be so much arguments over which is better.

  • That fact that English Larsa sounds 10 years older is what makes his VA so fken awesome, because he pulls it off so well.

  • I think one reason the English voices fit the characters better is because the game has a medieval-ish setting. I mean 10 had western and eastern qualities so both the English and Japanese suited the characters. At least that's what I think.

  • and Larsa. Talk about a precocious little fellah. He talks like he is at least twice as old.

  • Balthier's voice does not match a 22 year old man. Neither does Balthier's personality...

  • Japanese Fran got a generic "mature soft-voiced woman" voice. Boring. :(

English Fran got the sexiest voice I've ever heard.

Also, another fun voice comparison that wasn't in this vid: The guards who are after Vaan at the start of the game speaks in a cockney accent in the english verions and the distinct yakuza way of talking in the japanese version - clever dubbing, since both speeches are known from sounding rough and vulgar, and are (stereotypically) spoken by thugs.

  • i love the Eng. voice of Fran <3

I prefer more Eng voices !!

  • Balthier's ENG voice = The best for the leading man

  • English dub of FFXII is 100% good! Every game should be like this!

  • English Balthier is vastly superior.

  • I always prefer japanese voices but I love Ashes english voice. It´s a strong, independent voice...

  • i actually prefer the japanese version

  • Usually, I really like the Japanese dub. But this time, there's no doubt that the English version is faaaaaaar better! Especially Balthier's voice by Gideon Emery, just perfect! ♥ The Japanese voice doesn't fit him at all! He's a seducer (EN), not a couch potato (JP) >o<

  • Wow for the first time I actually prefer the English dub.

  • Usually, the original Japanese dub is the de facto victor.

But FFXII is the exception to the rule.

The combination of perfect cast and _Excellent Script_ was the winning formula.

  • I've never been a big fan of english dubs but I have to say that the english voice acting for ff12 is really superb. each character - especially fran and balthier, have voices that not only match their characters, but also help to build their characters.

  • Vaan's jap voice was awesome!

  • WOAH. O.o on my phone it can't pronounce the hap. Ones (it just has loads of computereh noises xD ), whitch is suprising considering its a smartphone ....

  • Larsa: Both versions are good. English voice fits his appearance, and make him look like a fearless warrior. Japanese version fits his age and childish character.

  • Vaan: Both versions are good. Eng voice fits his appearance. Jap voice fits his young age.

Balthier: Definitely English. Jap voice does not fit his character!!

Basch: Both versions are good. Eng voice fits his fearless character. Jap voice fits his appearance.

Ashe: Japanese version for sure, since she is more emotional.

Fran: Hmm....tricky one. Both versions seem good. Eng voice fits her looks. Jap voice makes her dangerous.

Penelo: English for sure! Jap voice makes her far older than she is!

  • oh god Fran is mush better in eng

  • Balthier 6:10 <3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3<3

  • larsa and penelo's japanese voice sucks.

  • ...vaan's japanese voice.....is...deeper... ( anythings deeper..)

  • @FroodTreeXD you like it?

  • @IJPRayaBinSaeng Hahha.. hmm, I dono..

  • I don't like fran japanesse voice :S

  • Usually i like jap but this time i prefer the eng. I was iching to hear ashe's voice in jap i really liked it, other characters i prefer eng. I love the game soo different from all other FF games.

  • And Larsa is Sabo??

  • Ashe's voice is done by Boa Hancock's from One Piece, right?

  • I knew there was a connection between One Piece and this game somewhere. Oh Sanji.... you must be happy.

Hee hee. I don't know how many times those hi-potions Larsa had kept me alive. Especially the X-Potions.

  • Ashe sounds like Sakura from Naruto in Japanese

  • Baltheir's jap voice does his epic character no justice!

  • Lol I thought Larsa was a girl the first time I saw him.

  • Hm... I prefer Penelo and Larsa's voices in Japanese. Sounds more appropriate to me... the other characters sound better in English in my opinion. Thanks for the vid, it was really inhteresting :)

  • im not sure why but the english voice of fran if you did it more cartoony it would sound almost like berri from conkers bad fur day.

  • i usually love jap voice, but these days english dub has improved a lot.

  • Balthier vs Fenris!

  • Vaan sounds like a nerd O___o

  • no matter what i always prefer japanese

  • @DXXDgame you weeaboo a retarded asshole who thinks japanese voices are better even though you can obviously the english voices are better and tell me how do you know that japanese va are better if ITS NOT EVEN IN YOUR OWN FUCKING LANGUAGE you can't tell that a seriyu is good or bad. so your a dumbass and goodbye

  • @SuperChris41 voice acting is still acting. We've all heard bad voice acting.

  • english voice actors seem to have access to a wider range of accents overall. probably due to the wide range of accents in the european world.

  • Penelo just Sucks! She shouldnt been in this game

  • Fran sounds so inappropriately old in the Japanese version.

  • @TurboBabyPuncher you stupid... how old are you think that Fran actually have? eng voice isn`t apropriate for her. It sounds like she is some kind of bitch in california beach. anyway, her jap voice is more apropriate for her mysterious age and her personality.

  • I love Larsa's voice, Johnny McKeown, I really prefer him instead that Yuka Imai.. but I can't find any information about him on internet!!! =(

  • Thumbs up if you'd tap Fran.

  • Vaan: English, youthful and vivacious

Balthier: English, Goes with his Appearance and charm

    Fran: English, Calm and Intelligent

Bashe: Both, English version sounds bold, japanese version sounds fearless

Penelo: English, Playful and trustworthy. When I listen to her english voice it almost makes everything seem better.

Larsa: English, Young and absolute. The "I'm young but i have power, and i know how to use it" kind of impression.

    Ashe: Both, independent and fustrated.

  • I don't like Penelo in Jap but Basch, Gabranth and Balther has much better Jap dubbings

  • wow they do so better in english.. usually i like it in japanese

  • i think they sound better in english because the ffxii cast all look caucasian..

  • Comment removed

  • @thequeenundisputed Yeah, you go and think about that... *rolls eyes*

  • @Kirjava6 I meant XIII, I typed V out of habit.

  • I can only stand Larsa and Ashe in the Japanese version...Penelo sounds like an old lady in Japanese. XD

  • ... the royalty of Ashe, Vayne and Larsa and the mystery and mystique of my beloved Fran

    o/

  • I gues that my western ears can't sense variety on the japanese voice cast. I prefer the english voice for all characters because they did well in showing each character's singularity. That's kind strange because I wacth a lot animes and i'm used to hear japanese voice dubs, but in this video they look almost all the same. And the english cast succeed in exalt the youth of Vaan and Penelo, the astuteness and cleverness of Balthier, the bravery and maturity of Basch...

  • Fran's a rare case where her english voice is actually pretty good and suits her well.. The rest.. well.. less we say about those the better

  • they need to pit Balthier against Captain jack sparrow, to see who could out smart each other thr most XD

  • Vaan: (Vann always bothered me but...) English

Balthier: English!!!! Gideon Emery IS Balthier!! Seriously... he is a bit like his character in person. lol. A really amazing guy. Anyway!

Fran: English, Both are good but Nicole I feel adds more mystery to Fran.

    Basch: English

Ashe: English. Kari is an AMAZING person! I was lucky enough to spend a day with her for a high school project. She is really wonderful at her craft and I respect her a lot.

    Penelo: Both

    Larsa: Both

  • I love Fran's voice, Nicole Fantl u are the best xD

  • Vaan: English!!

    Balthier: Eh, English.

    Fran: Japanese.

    Basch: I'm okay with both.

    Ashe: Japanese.

    Penelo: English!

    Larsa: Both..!

  • Vaan: Japaneses

    Balthier: English!

    Fran: English

    Basch: Both

    Ashe: Both

    Penelo: Japaneses

    Larsa: Both

  • Its not that Baltheir's Japanes voice is bad... Its just NOTHING can copeat with an english accesnt!

  • Let's see...

Vaan: I prefer his English voice.

    Balthier: ENGLISH!!!

Fran:Both.. but, her English VA accent is smexy.

    Basch: Both surprisingly.

    Ashe:English. Because...

Kari Wahlgren is Haruko from FLCL AND Lady from Devil May Cry!

But her Japaneses voice is pretty cool.

    Penelo: English. Hands down.

Larsa: Both surprisringly but I like his English voice more.

  • FFXII shows the world how video-game dubbing should be. Great attention to detail with the script and perfect casting.

  • Final Fantasy XII may not be my favorite Final Fantasy, but the english voice acting was awsome. I perfer all the english voice acting over the japanese, especially Ashe.

  • Vaan's Japanese VA is... Otoya-san? Holy crap.

  • how do you get english subs with japanese dubs? I have the collectors edition.

  • aw, balthier's japanese voice is so unsexy!!!!!

  • English Fran reminds me of the Last Unicorn.

  • i prefer:

vaan-english HE SOUNDS MORE LIKE A KID!

balthier-english HE SOUNDS DRUNK IN JAPANESE

    fran-english

    basch-english

    ashe-japanese

  • vaan-japanese

    balthier-english

    fran-japanese

    basch-english

    ashe-japanese

    penelo-english

    larsa-japanese

  • The English voice of Penelo is so much BETTER! :P

  • i thoguth Ashe had a british accent

  • Basch is so hot <3

  • @magicicle

Omg. I thought I was the only who thought this. I keep hearing Balthier, hes okay, but Basch I always like. He has nice abbs. =) Basch is hot indeed.

  • it totally grosses me out that Vaan and Penelo hook up lol

  • Vaan japanese, Balthier english, Fran english, Bash japanese, Penelo english, Larsa japanese (fits more to the age.), and I like Ashe only when she's silent - so you don't notice her at all, she doesn't deserve attention. :\

  • Wow, Frans voice is a really good example of how a voice can change a character. If I had gotten used to the Japanese Fran, and not the English voice, I think I would have interpreted her character quite differently.

  • The one game where I prefer the entire english cast. So well done!

  • the guy that does vaan's voice does hope's voice in final fantasy xiii right?

  • Frans voice sounds old in Japanes, besides I like her accent in English better.

Balthiers voice in english is superb a voice worthy of prodigal sky pirate.

Vaans voice in japanese sounds really good, I like both.

I prefer Basch's english voice than the Japanese one.

Ashe's voice sounds really good in Japanese and in English.

Penelo's voice sounds like a little boy in Jap.

Hmmm. . . Larsa's is. . .idk, I guess the english voice is the one I like most.

  • Vaan - Japanese

    Balthier - ENGLISHENGLISHENGLISH

Fran - English, because she speaks with that nice accent :D

    Basch - English

    Ashe - Japanese

    Penelo - English

Larsa - I think his English voice makes him sound too old, so I'll choose the Japanese voice. He is, after all, only 12 years old :D

  • Japanese Balthier got nothing on English Balthier

  • I like all the English voice betters, except maybe for Ashes.

Whenever Ashe talks in english she comes off as a spoiled whiny bitch princess to me. (But who knows, I haven't played for a really long time.)

  • Vann - Japanese is the best

    Balthier - English wins

    Fran - Japanese

    Basch - English

    Ashe - Japanese

    Penelo - English

    Larsa - Japanese

  • Balthier sounds a lot like Sanji in One Piece...

  • after Dirge of Cerberus-Final Fantasy VII, i consider this EAV the best than i hear, i also like most than japanese. but the japanese voice of balthier and larsa's english one... i though than i hear them before. anyways. english is my favorite

  • I'd like to congratulate for both English and Japanese Voice cast of Final Fantasy XII for the excellent work well done

  • Comment removed

  • I'm for the Japanese voices, considering I watch Japanese Anime alot, and I discovered that the lip sync was off like crazy, and that bothered me. Larsa sounds older, which I like since he doesn't seem 12 to me Dx. Balthier I liked in English since I view him as an awesome kick-ass British Sky Pirate.

  • I'm glad you included Larsa as well. He's just an awesome character :)

  • Comment removed

  • english voices sounds better. i have to admit even though i did not like this game, it has the best voice acting in any final fantasy game....voice acting in ff13 is a joke.

  • fran's jap voice is mad!

  • im a sucker for anime so ill stick with the japanese voices though i agree that the english dub was quite awesome too. :)

  • English voice acting was very good in this game. Japanese acting was, 'eh'. Sounds like pretty much any other anime.

  • I actually like Basch voice in Japanese, Larsa too^^

Balthier is definately better in English, he is forever the suave British pirate in my eyes. Penelo sounds too boy-ish in Japanese and Ashe sounds like the typical annoying-japanese-girl. In conclusion the English voices are better:)

  • Vaan: I dunno. I seem to like his English voice more for some reason. It just fits him better.

    Balthier: English

    Fran: English. Accent is great

    Basch: English

Ashe: English is cool, but the Japanese one has much more emotion.

    Penelo: English

    Larsa: English, better accent.

In all, English voices are better in my opinion.

    5/5

  • I guess you really can't account for taste. Fran's VA made me want to stab myself in the ears everytime I heard her, but loads of people seem to love her. Her seiyuu is quite good though.

  • Ashe is a lot better in Japanese to me. (In English, she sounds kinda rough...)

    Vaan is awesome in both.

    Balthier is better in English.

Don't like Fran either way -.-

    Basch is better in English

    PENELO JAPANESE FTW!!

  • The english audio was horrible in general. It was so obviously STUDIO, it bothered me from the very first minute I played the game. And I never got used to it either. That's probably another reason why I played this game only once.

  • Balthier in english is awaseme!

Same is Fran, bunny, sexy, bitchy ;D

    Love them both!

    I also like Larsas english

  • The English voices go perfect with this game, especially since it's in a more European setting (like Vagrant Story).

What I find most odd, though, is that Fran's voice is more exotic in the English version than the Japanese one. You'd really expect it to be the other way around... I suppose it must be her accent. God the voices in XII are amazing...

  • This is the ONLY (so far) final fantasy that (with voices) were I like the english actors better then the Japanese ones.

  • I must say that I prefer English far more than Japanese. It fits with the game and the personalities of the characters more. My favorites are probably Ashe, Vaan, Larsa, and Fran.

  • Is it just me or does Penelo's Japanese voice sound manlier than Larsa's... o_O

  • vaan=kurenai otoya the best!

  • Vaan: I can't stand him but English,

    Balthier: English love the accent

Fran: Japanese it seems to fit her more

    Basch: English

Asche: either but Japanese has more emotion I can't decide

Penelo: English sounds more girlie I just like it more

    Larsa: English more royal like

  • Vaan-English. Japanese sounds too old. I feel Bobby Edner really nailed Vaan.

    Balthier-English all the way.

Fran-Both of them are really good but English for the mouthwatering Icelandic accent.

Basch-Got to go with Keith Ferguson.

    Ashe-English for some reason.

    Penelo-Either

Larsa-English all the way. I like that he's a boy in this version.

  • Vaan: i can't stand him in English, so yeah, Japanese

Balthier: oh dear lord, make the Japanese version STOP! *cries in a corner*

Fran: Japanese is ok, but i prefer the English version.

Bash: isn't my fav either way, but about equal

Asche: either one really, they're kinda on par with each other

Penelo: if the English was voiced like the Japanese, i wouldn't hate her so much

Larsa: i like both, but the Japanese version reminds me of Ciel from Kuroshitsuji... which is a strange thought for Larsa

  • Vaan: Both, but I prefer hearing the Japanese version

Balthier: Both, but I like the English one..

Fran: Japanese. Her voice fit with her appearance

    Basch: Both....For obvious reasons

Ashe: Both are excellent..I like both of the voice

Penelo: Japanese...cause she sounds freak when in English version

Larsa:Japanese...That's make him fit to his age..The English version I like his way of talking..British accents...<3

  • Vaan: Both are good, and fit Vaan's "matured teenager" personality well. There are times when both sound aggressive.

    Balthier: English, British accent. <3

Fran: Both are good, although I feel Japanese fits her more.

Basch: English, Keith Ferguson never let us down. Japanese

Ashe: Both are good and did a pretty good job.

Penelo: I feel as though English fits her more, but both are very good.

Larsa: Japanese has a good side, and makes him sound more like his age. English is good too.

  • But in the English version its subtitle is little off than the dub itself..I'm not lying...

  • I think Japanese version was better than English version...except Balthier in english version...my favourite is Basch,Fran,Balthier and Ashe in Japanese version...

  • I like the English version better.

Vaan and Balthier have such a good english voice, specially Balthier, his english voice makes him who he is.

I prefer English Basch voice because I can't imagine a knight talking in japanese, it doesn't make sense -.-

The only one I prefer in it's japanese version is Fran.

She is a Viera, they are a tribe who consider themselves better than the other tribes. When I hear the english dub I just hear a teenager being insuportable, Japanese one is more adult.

  • I like both, but I'd have to go with the English version.

I liked how the English actors differentiated the voices more and it made them all more unique and individual. Because after all most of the main characters came from different parts of Ivalice. Japanese, to me, sounded to similar...but that can because I am used to the english one. I loved them both though!! <3 :DDD

  • vaan: english is much better

    balthier: english

fran:japanase is her stile of voice

basch: japanase is more like him

    ashe: mmmm i liked both

  • Vaan: Japanese. Bobby Edner doesn't put that much emotion into Vaan's voice. It's like a drone, and sounds like Edner is too close to the recording equipment.

Balthier: English... does anyone need to ask why? Sure it's deep in the original..but..Gideon Emery owned in this.

Fran: English, sounds more mysterious. I love the sort of Icelandic accent it has!

    Basch: Both do very well.

    Ashe: English. More noble.

Penelo: Both are good, though that the Japanese version suits her more!

    Larsa: Both.

  • I liked the English better. The japanese voices sound too modern. Plus the acting for the Japanese is too simple

  • The english dub here is a disgrace to the FF series. Not just in terms of actor quality but in terms of audio compression. God I hate dubs.

  • o great another dub hatter japanese is not that good either

  • @GLMnumber9 Shat ap jap fanbay

  • Vaan: English

Balthier: I love him with an English accent! The Japanese version, because it's deeper, seems to suit him more.

    Fran: Japanese for sure.

    Basch: both work for me.

Ashe: both work on this one too.

    Penelo: English.

Larsa: I thought the English version was a girl! But I do like it better for some reason.

  • Basch : For some reason, I think I like the English one better. :3

Ashe : Ohh, I like both the Japanese *and* English. ♥

Penelo : The English one sounds more childish, in a way, and it seems to fit her character. But I do like the Japanese voice too. ^ ^

Larsa : The English one sounds more royal-like [xD], so it definitely fits with his position. I lurrrv Larsa~ :]

  • Vaan : I liked both.

Balthier : The English one seemed to have more expression in the way he talked; the accent seemed to also add into the factor. The Japanese one just seemed pretty plain. Kind of like a voice you could hear in just about any other typical anime or something.

Fran : I like both... The Japanese one sounds pretty, and the English one makes her sound more like she belongs in a place like Eruyt Village. More... foreign-like.

  • lol japan Fran voice fits more to her

  • Perfeito!

  • I love their voices. the accent. specially baltheir.

  • I wasn't complaining at all about the english voice in this game. I think this game perfected the english dubbing for over seas games.

  • I really.. don't like the Jap voices for this game XD I started in English, staying with english... Jap is okay with DBZ and such, I find it makes them sound funny, especially Goku XD but yeh.. FFXII, best in english... my opinion

  • ESPECIALLY Balthier. his american voice gives him sooo much classy charm he could kill your whole family and still swoon over him. his Japanese actor is just kinda standard.

  • American? Hm, well then again, could of easily fooled me.. I can't see any differences between Canadian and American accents >.> except the ones that are just.. much different.

  • psshha, stop complaining about stupid details. no one cares.

  • That wasn't complaining, it was merely pointing out things :P

  • I find the english ones quite superior. Specially in characters like Fran and Balthier :3

  • Vaan: Japanese (it just suits him better for some reason)

    Balthier: English (well duh)

    Fran: Japanese (Sounds more mysterious)

    Basch: Both

    Ashe: Japanese (has more emotion)

    Penelo: Both

Larsa: ENGLISH (Japanese is a girl...Larsa's a guy)

  • You know, you got to feel a little sorry for the English dubbers. The better that the animation gets, the harder it is for them to fit the English forces to it.

I think that, considering what they had to work with, this was an extraordinary display of dubbing. One of the best I've ever heard.

Still, nothing beats the English dub of FMA. The ladies, they LOVE Vic Mignogna.

  • Fran has a delicious voice in both languages.

  • Don't take this as a insult, but i always thought Fran's voice sounded like Bjork (not when she is singing, but when talking) Its has that very Icelandic accent.

  • i usualy like the japanese voiceings better on these but this one is a lil' iffy

  • Oh, and for those of you who say all Japanese voices sound the same, the Japanese say the exact same thing about American voices and accents. The reason the untrained ear can't tell the difference in Japanese accents is because they use slightly different dialects, which ARE included in the Japanese voices on this game.

  • I like how diverse the English voices are. You know, how the characters have different accents and whatnot depending on where they come from in the game. It makes it seem more real that way.

And the English voices are better suiting, in my opinion. Balthier, for instance - he sounds like just another guy in the Japanese version, but in English his voice gives him that certain quality that just makes him.
