  • lost 4mins of my time doing this shit because it's not working in 1.2

  • this is huge compared to my version

  • Asdf fuck

  • 37 sec to notice night 20 sec to notice rainy day

  • The Night or Day change does a chunk Update and toggels the Bud Switch

  • @BinaryLp Nope the Night and day thing does not do a chunk update. The concept of this contraption is that in the day the Grass grows on the dirt block so that block gets an update not the chunk chunks cant toggle bud switches. And in the night the grass changes into dirt again and does an other BLOCK update, well thats it hope ya understand.

  • i dont get it. how does redstone know what lightlevel it is?

  • @SuperLord36 Redstone cant tell whats the light lvl but redstone can tell when a block updates by using a bud switch (just look it up). The dirt block changes into a grass block when its day and the block updates and the redstone can tell using a bud switch. And in the night the grass block changes back into a dirt block and causes an other update

  • i is confused >.< what is powering it? what is turning it on or off

  • @AskJoe1 It's the block update of the grassblock in the middle.. Look at Etho's vid.. The name was some kind of "Light sensor v.2"..

  • @AskJoe1 There is a bud switch powering this thing a block update detector. It detects block updates so grass growth and ofcourse changing back to a dirt block.

  • I found mine just stoped working severat times

  • The issue that I seem to find with this design and I can't remember if it was the same with Etho's is that it's fairly slow. If you wanted to hook this up so it would bring lights up so mobs don't spawn, you would already have a good amount of mobs spawn before it activates. I know Etho's design was somewhat random but this seems just plain slow.

  • DAMN MINECRAFT WATER PHYSICS

  • This wont work on 1.1

  • or use a bed to make it day :O magic

  • Hum... I can build some stuff with redstone, made a password for door and some traps, a on/off light for a house and a lock for a double door with pressure plates but I still don't understand well how pistons recieve and pass on power. Any tips anyone?

  • 0:17 already? seriously?

  • thats a bud switch

and i have a mor compact version

  • 0:17 ball ball PENIS!

  • @IMAKILLYAMATE 0:18 OHMAGOD YOU BROKE MY BAALLSS

  • @IMAKILLYAMATE haha! immaturity! :D

  • smart invention but i could just use a in game clock wich no offense is better

  • @vi3txcraft An in-game clock cannot be used to switch on lights automatically when it gets dark.

  • How about a tutorial that [a] works, and [b] doesn't involve such confusion as adding and removing the same damn block 5 or 6 times in a tutorial. Present it in screenshots of each block layer - simple. It worked at first, although VERY delayed, would only trigger at noon and midnight (when the sun/moon was in the middle of the sky)

  • @devil614 he places/ breaks blocks to update the pistons to put them in the right positions.

  • His 2.00 worked for the rain for me, dont know why not for you.

  • 6:66

  • awesome, i am still a novice with redstone, the only original thing i builded without looking at the wiki was a suffocation trap with pressure plates ._. keep doing great jobs :3

  • can we get a save?

  • BrowsOfSteel = Awesome sneaky ninja!

  • O_o

  • ok basically grass growing/dying causes a block update and when it updates the pistone it pushes a series going to the top and alllowing/cutting off water causing it to grow/die

  • Hey dude i can some things about redstone, BUT HOW THE HECK DOES THIS WORK?

  • @EyvalxD There is a bud switch a block update detector. It detects the grass growth and grass decay and makes a redstone pulse out of it.

  • i made one of these with 4 gold and a redstone. then a creeper killed me

  • Which one of the grass blocks dies and regrows?

  • This should work with mycelium right? Also do the iron block you put down have to be a different material than the rest of the structure?

  • Comment removed

  • guys. four gold and one redstone. this is more reliable. Honestly.

  • @TheDaniel366 What if you want doors to open in the morning, or shutters to close at night? You can do that with this machine. I want to see how a watch will do that.

  • @TheJfe33 well, put a bed. you'll wake in the morning. 3 wood + 3 wool. put a pressure plate next to a door from the inside. 3 stone. Put a button on the outside wall to make sure no creeper gets in. 2 more stone. No need to waste lots of space for a pointless mechanic which will do a work of 4 gold, one redstone, 3 wool, 3 wood and 5 stones. RLY.

  • @TheDaniel366 This automates your whole house. Why press a button when it can just happen? You realize with Ethos second design, you can place this machine in a lake or something completely underground and have it work right? No waste of space. Tell me, would you rather have to press a whole bunch of buttons, or stuff to happen automatically? I'm sorry you want to live in the stone age and not explore any redstone at all.

  • Comment removed

  • @TheJfe33 Firstly, one super mega ultra grass clock automated door opener and shutter closer + one creeper = no super mega ultra grass clock automated door opener and shutter closer. Secondly, Everyone chooses for himself. I use red stone for traps and light signalling. You can use it for a grass clock. Have a nice day, sir.

  • @TheDaniel366 Firstly the grass clock can be placed underground with no room for things to ever spawn. Secondly two weeks ago you went on about how useless it is and saying that a compass is sooo much better and more reliable. If everyone uses just simple mechanics that the games has, there wouldn't be all this cool redstone shit.

  • @TheDaniel366 How does a watch detect light? >_> It just points out day and night..

  • ok, to all asking!

    this works in 1.0.0

it detects, not the change in light to update blocks, but the growth of grass. when the detector is in the off state (in other words, Day), it allows water to touch the grass. when it turns to night, the grass dies (which may take a little while. be patient). this updates a block by the piston. this process turns on the piston, allowing the water to stop touching the, now, dirt block. in the day, the grass grows again, updating it, and turns the output off

  • Does this still work in 1.0.0?

  • I can make a window.

  • confusing !!! i dont check this ! .....

  • 2:50 its an improved one of ethos etho has 111 episodes =O

  • lol penis at 0:17

  • i like it but what is for

  • lol, Penis at :

  • when its rain its dark though so it should really be on night when its raining...

  • I used to build redstone contraptions. Then I shot someone in the knee.

Shitty jokes aside, How does it work?

  • @Koloszrodosthe supposed to say then i GOT shot in the knee

  • @sk8kipaa I KNOW WHAT ARROW IN THE KNEE JOKES ARE. I don't think you got the irony of mine.

  • @sk8kipaa I know you fuckshit. The irony was that I reversed the joke making it that I SHOT someone in the knee. You have no sense of humour. Either that or you're just 10.

  • I built this and it only works for one night. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  • Isn't working in 1.0, the piston with controls the water doesn't update

  • I tried doing this and it didn't even power during night.

  • 00:17 u perv :D

  • looks awesome and i have a few ideas how i could use it... but how the hell does it work?

  • yay just made a castle with these spread throughout the grounds and there attached to t flip flops which turn the light on at sunset

  • 1:05 Foot Aplause

  • This is outdated D:

  • BrowsOfSteel, at 0:32, is that an iron block you attached to the sticky piston?

  • Wtf, how does a grass block dien effect redstone or water or somethin?

  • woah this is pretty cool but im new to redstone creations could you explain how this thing can detect night or day?

  • @kastor246 grass grows at a certain minimum light level and dies/turns into dirt below another certain light level. the bud(block update detector)-switch triggers if one block of grass turns into dirt and vice versa. this signal is then used to trigger a t-flipflop (t stands for "toggle", basically it is set to either on or off and toggles if it receives a signal). the output of this flipflop is your indicator for night/day. if there are still open questions, just reply or pm me.

  • @kastor246

First make standaart bud switch. Than make Tflipflop.

The light sensor works as follow:

Day= Grass under the water get's enough light to stay gras.

Night= Grass uner the water don''t get any light. So it will turn into dirt.

Bud switch detect that and the other piston will stop the water.

Day= Grass get's enough light to grow so it will be grass again and the bud switch detect that.

I know a other machine that is more compact but this will work fine :)

  • @kastor246 block update

  • @kastor246 probably mushrooms

  • @kastor246 it detects day and night because when the day and night changes the blocks update. the repeaters are backwards to the time after disableing the redstone torch so the only way to make the repeaters move is to update the blocks near it. this dosent work anymore as of 1.0 but you could use a repeaters clock with BIG ticks and it will work :P

  • @24Grox what the heck is blocks update?

  • @KoltTv it means that at night it checks all the blocks because in night the blocks texture used to become darker. so it checked the blocks so it wont put different blocks. so somtimes the redstone dont update with the check.

  • @24Grox Dude Day and night does not do a block update. Its just the grass growth at day and the grass decay at night with water thats the block update not the freaking day night change. Dont talk shit about things you dont know anything about.

  • @TheAppleTreee on the old versions the blocks would update within day and night and thats how i used to make the sensors so i wasen't "shit talking"....

  • @kastor246 Just watch etho's vid. He explains it very well

  • @kastor246 He's creating something called a BUD switch, made popular be Etho as well. BUD stands for "block update detector". There's a glitch where if you power a block diagonally to a piston and update a block next to the piston, it will activate. Updating a block is like walking on redstone ore, or opening a door, or, in this case, grass growing on dirt. So during the day, the piston stays in because the grass is there, and it activates at night because there is no grass.

  • @kastor246 you could have lights that are only on at night

  • @kastor246 Its the grass that dies at nighttime, and regrows at daytime.. and just make a signal out of it!

  • @kastor246 in the day, the grass grows down to the normal dirt blocks, which updates a piston and causes the chain reaction

  • @kastor246 when you're new to redstone start with the basics, the basics of this project is a budswitch and water/grass minecraft physics. good luck :)

  • @kastor246 Ok this thing basically uses a block update detector a bud switch and there is a t-flip-flop connected to it. The grass grows at day and causes a block update the bud switch detects the update and toggles the t-flip-flop. And the grass decays because of a very low light lvl water+night and the grass decay causes an other update and toggles the t-flip-flop. Hope ya understand

  • if you put a block of glass above the water on that of etho's, there is no problem when it rains

  • Its just a bud switch Really

  • NICE! Very compact!

  • At 0:16 you made a penis!hahahahaha

  • i dont understand what does it do?

  • it worked! and i make it as a automatic lighter using redstonepower mod!

  • 0:17

  • @musicProAyodance BAHAHAHAHA!

  • @TheSilled Its a subliminal ~~~~

  • @musicProAyodance ik i was going to post that but then saw your comment and thought

    thats what she said

  • why not just look up?

  • @FromSpartaWithLove It's for circuitry you idiot. Redstone can't look up... Let's say you wan't a tune to play every night/day. You don't wanna activate it every time, so you make this automatic system. Which, as I said, can't simply look up. Good day troll...

  • @FromSpartaWithLove what if you want redstone to activate when its night you retard

  • @world295 its call an inverter retard.

  • @HowToAndCoolThings that's not what he was saying... look at what he was replying to.

  • @HowToAndCoolThings i wasnt talking about inverters retard

  • 0:16

lol y I be immature for

  • grass might have changed in 181

  • I tried all three sensors but with none of them the grass will die at night :( What am I doing wrong?

  • does it have to be grass?

  • It is less much better to use a clock.

  • talk

  • does this work on multiplayer?

  • OMAZING!

  • interesting design . Gona check it out

  • this is alot like etho's contraption :P

  • what a compact contraption! <3

  • Hello. Where did you get that flat sandstone map? Thanks!

    @BrowsOfSteel

  • @Yikak4 i can make one you need? PM me

  • Nice. Have you tried a four cubicle system, each cubicle facing a different direction. (cubicle=you buds switch) to see if it improve it's effectiveness.

  • (Sorry for bad grammar) I have a question: Why will the piston activate if the grass block changes to dirt? I used this block-change-will-activate-piston thing to make a farm counter. But I don’t understand why this works…

  • Thanks!

It was an easy tutorial, as I found etho's one abit hard to use, also very compact and simple, it fits in my house in MC XD

  • Lol had a few problems building this first few times so I'll share what I learned for new builders... build it fast and build it in the morning. If your having trouble with reliability build an array of them (three does pretty well) and have them feed into the same repeater so that you have a faster response time and if one misfires or gets obliterated by endermen or creepers you still have two left to do the job.

  • Well, it's the Pro Argen formula.

  • works good would like to see a more acurate version though

  • How does it actually work? Can someone please explain

  • Very cool idea. I didn't realize that underwater grass reverts to dirt without light.

  • how does it work

  • does it work on SMP

  • 0:16 LOL :P

  • Ill stick to my watch.

  • how did you get that landscape so flat?

  • @godwr123 MC Edit

  • Penis lol 0.17

  • Okay? Nothing really happened. This video was very anti-climatic.

  • thanks

  • ah i get it water will only kill the grass at night then when day comes around the grass grows triggering the flood

if its flooding at night and the grass dies it closes the flood

  • такое дерьмо блядь ебаное шо таво мама рот

  • This just blowed my mind minecraft physics is weird (and cool) how does it even work?

  • I don't really get how this works :\

  • Does it differentiate rain and storms? Because I would like to use this to lock doors and put up water defenses at night, but monsters spawn in storms too...will it protect me in storms is the question.

  • I THINK I may have improved the design on your size a bit further (4x3x5). Don't quote me on that though. I'll see about uploading a video if I'm right.

  • Anyone have a link to Etho's origional?

  • Modloader doesnt work anyways?

  • i don't get it, a pitson is activated because mud changes into grass??? how is that even possible

  • @Wolvus1 Don't you believe in magic? =(

  • @Wolvus1 There is a property of pistons where if set up right they wont retract/expand untill a block registers a change and forces the piston to check if it should move. Therefor the grass changing triggers this event and the pistons will move, which I presume turns off the power so next time it updates they all retract... Sorry for the lack of detail, I haven't experimented this, nor can recall the exact details for the system atm D=

  • What does it do

  • awesome

  • I have a problem. It burns out very fast like after 2 nights I really need this in a custom map.. Sooo.. It's a bit fail if it doesent reset...

  • Hello,

I'm having a litlle problem : the grass directly under the water correctly dies but the 2nd grass , the one that must die, doesn't die so the whole system doesn't work. Do you know how to fix this ?

  • @Othenor

The only thing I can think of is that you have an outside light source keeping it alive. Try surrounding the whole contraption in blocks if it isn’t already.

  • @BrowsOfSteel The side non-sticky piston does not update at day, is this normal?

  • To my utter surprise I have found someone who is as good as/better than Etho.

  • @JackofAllTrades799 there are plenty of ppl just as good or as good as etho, and i wouldn't necessarily say hes just as good just cause he figured out one thing. I bet if you or i worked on one thing like this we could easily do it

  • So, you have to have an array? One won't do the job?

  • This is awesome for an un-modded version of Minecraft! I like the design but I rather use Risugami's light sensor. :l Though epic machine!

  • Omg! How in the world does this work! Explain?

  • What could this be used for? Im not being a smartass, just curious. Pretty genius design either way

  • @RMD343 light switch off in the day, on in the night, shutting/opening a mob trap for best mob killing, MOAR YAY

  • @RMD343 You could make an automatic light switch that turns on during nighttime

  • How does this work? Is there some block that gets an update when it is night? I havnt watched Ethos video.

  • @WASDsweden The water destroys the grass at night but during the day it's bright enough for the grass to spread back on to the block it came off. That block changing in to mud then back to grass is the update that makes the piston activate.

  • @elementalguy2 Thanks

  • @elementalguy2 so while the grass has spread during the day how does it know to open the pistons again at night to let the water flood to destroy the grass?

  • @shune84 Light from the sun doesn't get reduced in brightness due to water so the grass can survive, after a certain time the sunlight is gone so the light level is no longer high enough to keep the grass a live so the block updates to a dirt block. Once sunrise occurs again the grass from the neighbouring rings of grass spread on to the dirt as the light level is high enough again, this causes another update. Hope that's a bit clearer.

  • @Paindefender It's sad that people can't wait that long. ಠ_ಠ

  • @Paindefender what?

  • nice one =)
