It changed again with Kingdom Reborn the article mentions. About names, I believe I recall a Nightshade way back. I regret not starting on release of Ultima Online (1997). I played from 1998, quit in May/June, July, more than one account. Many people were more than happy that I quit. One reason was because of all of the houses placed gave them plenty of items. 2 castles among the buildings, several keeps, a Felucca guards house. (Grandfathered account included). I imagine problems emerged from

Oh, this song...I played UO for 7 years - quit a few times, and kept coming back (as so many of my friends joked, UO has a way of pulling you back) - heck, I still want to come back. I played Catskills - and coming back for the last time to find that all the real RPers were gone, and in their place, those that bought their gold, their skills, their accounts...it tears a die-hard UO'er apart.
@XoCheryloX who were you on Catskills, the wife and I played on there as well, we were the McTaggerts; Samuel and Jaycee, Sethia, Doulos; all of then were our characters
@cable377777 I believe my first character on there was Nightshade. When I rejoined for the last time two years ago, there was a new Nightshade who accused me of 'name stealing'. That may have been one of my final straws. Regardless... I also had a few I didn't play so much - Faegan, Raelyn, and one other I can't recall.
Did EA ruin UO? Yes they Did. Remember though Origin was sold to EA in 1992. If not for EA's deep pockets UO would have never been made. Just saying cuz thiers lots of misinformation that EA bought Origin AFTER they made UO.
Song always brings back memories, my first graphical mmo and just starting HS. Why can't tehy make a new UO that was like the old one.
All lthe mmo's these days follow the same EQ formula mostly, no open world sandbox "do whatever you want" rather they hold your hand and lead you on a strict linear pathway, to me that flies directly in teh face of what an "rpg" is meant to be.
@gyloir -- "sandbox" isn't where the big $ is at for the people behind video games. It's all big business now. Before companies and devs could cater to their fanbase and did everything they could to make a playable/enjoyable game for *THAT* exceptional subset of people. Now, they are asked to appeal to the broadest market possible and we get cookie cutter MMO's (e.g., EQ/WoW/etc.). Just like Hollywood, the majority of stuff produced is crap. Still, possibility of a cool indie title exists...
This was my very first game and I still love it dearly. It just breaks my heart to log in and see so many of the old player run towns in ruins, shadows and ghosts of what once were. swords, anat, tactics, healing, taming, lore and vet.... I was so so very happy being a swordswoman and tamer.
This is the song of my childhood. I began playing UO when I was 7 years old back in 98. Yet, I remember watching as my father and elder brother played each day for a year before that. We quit because EA warped everything. This song actually makes me cry, because UO was THE game for me. It was the game that got me into games. It was the game that inspired me to do so many things as a child. There will never be another game like it, and thanks to EA, UO will never be as wonderful as it once was.
*cry* I miss how UO used to be :( Started playing back in August 1999. Loved it so so SO SO much that I failed College because of how addictive it was! Stopped mid 2004 because my guild split :-( just didn't feel the same. I loved Original. I loved Age of Shadows.
Came back for a week in 2009 but it just wasn't the same :-( I miss you UO. You were a big part of my life for 5 years.
Its a mixed reaction when I hear this song. On one hand it brings back many great memories, on the other hand, it brings immense sadness as I am reminded that something wonderful, something amazing is dead, lost to greed and incompetance. I only hope that after EA finally decides to shut down UO and stop abusing it, that someone who understood was UO was about buys it and restores it to its former glory, preferably during the T2A era.
There will never be a game like this ever again imo. The early years (Release until Pub 16) those were by far the best time I ever had gaming. I can't even play any MMOs anymore because they just don't live up.
@Adino1 You don't have to play others, Ultima may be pretty crappy now. But try out Free Shards like UO Gamers: Divinity. It's a very popular, and very fun, T2A Era Ultima Shard. And it's free!
everyone who ever played Ultima Online in its day... Pre-UOr, remember T2A.... remember when they wiped Siege Perilous (the day i quit to never return) Best memories of my life, memories I tried and failed to relive in world in warcraft

@Essefen actually, that was probably Ultima 9. Which is funny, when you think about it. Despite the bugs and drastically scaled back implementation it eventually recieved, it started out as a kind of proto-Oblivion. If EA had put a bit more faith in it, we could have had Oblivion nearly a decade early.

I'm right there with you, i am learning to become a game designer as well, i would love to team up with you and whoever else to bring back the good old days of UO, i have never played a game that fun since UO, no MMO has ever been the same for me, and i would love to make a new game that would bring back the good old day's

The one and only pre T2A shard. Oldschool OSI gameplay of 97-98(dread lords, virtue guards, plate mages etc). If you miss good old uo days check this out uogenesis (dot) com
@diggwadd That's a very depressing idea. I always felt this song was more about an amazing story to begin, not the drudge march of one ending. Personally, what I'll do is carry around a tape player or other audio device with speakers and click to play the UO death fanfare right before I die. Let's just hope there's an ankh nearby!
I just thought I would post that over the last week Ive started playing UO again for free. Google search uosecondage and the shard will come up. Is a very active and populated server (almost always 500 people or more on) and it is perfect. Exactly the way I loved the game before EA destroyed it. I hope to see any of you there.
It was the best ever, and will always be. I've played Orgin servers and I've played player run shards off and on since the beginning. After Azeroth decided to shut down IPY the game was never the same.
No, as blackdreath said, you can download the entire game from the website. The patcher which is also included with the download will get all the patches you need to be up and running. Just follow the instructions on the website and voila, welcome to UO: The way it was meant to be :)
i'd say the best thing about this game was indeed the consequences...along with the social aspect, which manifested itself in a truly unique and incredible way that has never been replicated to this day. Graphics didn't matter, it was about who had your back and if you could hold your own on the field. It seemed so casual most the time and I think that's a major part of it's earlier success. Casual I say, but also capable of producing some of the most intense pvp i've ever been involved in.
You guys know alot of these "feelings" are becaused you played when you were most likely really young/younger. Nothing wrong with that, just something to consider when biasing =) good game tho, I loved it.
You're right I started playing in 97, nothing to this day has touched me personally in regards to all the MMO's I see today. UO just had this magical feel to it, like nothing fancy, just like you're living in a real world, with real consequences.
If you died, it was always a risk that you wouldn't get your gear back, the only magic items were Silver, ruin, might, power vanq, nothing more, nothing less, no factions just player ran guilds.
I miss the game, but after playing it for 6 years I am glad I quit. It ate my life away like WOW did when it first came out. Fuck online games. I'll never play them or console games again. I have real life shit to do.
Some people find working in the hot sun all day fun. Some people find selling drugs and breaking the law fun. Some people like haggis.
Is it really so weird to think that people might have more fun online than IRL? Obviously it's no replacement, but if I have more fun spending 5 hours on a raid Friday night than I would going out to the bar for 5 hours on a Friday night what's wrong with that?
in this world the further become's the past as the past fade's soon into memory. and memory becomes that of the past as well. all i have to say in this matter is if UO die's the beginning of all the mmorpg's well be lost. most do not understand that ultima online started it all.
But hey, nearly 10 Years ... The bad and sad thing is that there is no other Game like UO. Only stupid Grinding, 1337HaXXoRPvP, UlraHighPhotoRealisticGraphics, etc ...
I remember the first Time, as i see that u can go to an Tree and get Wood from them - awesome, the first Dungeon, Solens with some older Players in my Trial Time. They show me some things, realy nice People, very friendly. I miss the Atmo and the "RP" feeling when u explore the Land ...
@KingsKnight7 (I know this response is really late but here it is anyway)
I remember in UO before they had the sound working right this (and other songs) would play at random times, like sometimes you would recall/gate and the sound would cut in, they way it just played randomly gave it a really errie atmosphere for me.
BTW There is a download for the UO sound track (Pre-UO:R) on torrent. I actually turned a few of them into .abc files to play in LOTRO
I played from 98-03. I loved the game but had to leave. My thing on UO was PVP and PVP as we knew it, is gone now. True MMO pvp will never be like old school UO. I loved running from PKs while I trained as a noob. Factions was great, but care bear land and the Item based bullshit that followed, destroyed UO.
Because it brings memory of the game (or the lifestyle) that's gone for a good :( i'm listening "stones" every morning just to bring back memories of perfect game, perfect world, perfect players, perfect story-line.
EA has ruined it, who wanna watch elves running with sunglasses in trammel? that's simply not fair for ultima fans :/
EA did more than destroy UO, they also destroyed Ultima as a whole. Ultima IX was their monstrosity, and it raped the series. It broke my heart. Hearing this song brings back so many memories.
Perhaps if by proper patching you mean completely and utterly changing the story around, then I might agree. But a defining moment of the Ultima series was when Dupre sacrificed his life to restore the balance of a dying world. That was huge - a character who had been a part of the series since Ultima II, an emotional blow to long time fans.
And in Ultima IX he comes back from the dead? No mention at ALL of why he died or what happens to Balance with him no longer a part of the Serpent.
100% agree, the story line of Ultima IX was kind of upsetting, but the game play was actually really great...after patching of course. But you aren't the only one who has the feelings about Ultima IX's story. There are countless die hard ultima fans that got teams together to "re-do" ultima IX using Dungeon Siege 2 engines, and one even using The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion engine.
I remember playing UO for years. i started in 2000 and loved it. once they added powerscrolls and the likes the game went to complete shit for good. EA totally ruined a perfect game. i even played on player servers like In Por Ylem.
Ah UO... before EA took over, everyone knew how to PVP.. you had to EARN your items, not camp in Doom all damn day... Artifacts killed this game severely...
Doom? I quit the game years ago, but started with beta in 96 right after alpha was over. I only know doom is a dungeon from the other ultima games, had no idea they put it in UO...sigh
Yeah, it's a good thing you quit before Doom was added. Doom is a place where you fight these Champs Monsters, and at random you get this artifacts which drastically makes the player over-powered like the Hat of Magi and etc.
Not only the artifacts are overpowered but they are so f-in rare that you have people actually staying in Doom for days and months looking for one, and the spawn time is crazy.. they drop like 1 artifact every week or month...
I know this might seem weird but i agree with terry cause they ruined the game with mondains legacy and all the exp that were not by the orig company i really think the need a new patch like 1999 because i played when i was 4 was born in 1996 cause this version IS SHIT
You are so wrong about EA saving the game. Ea Murdered UO. There is a huge player base that plays UO Gamers which is like the old ultima online. About 800 players on one shard at any given time. Compare that to EA and there 80 players if that. IF EA would just change it back to the way it was in 1999 and leave it that way. It would blow up again more than any other online game. I would bet my last dollar on that.
Twas the beginning! Dread Lords and Corpse looters hearken!

@diggwadd I would like that too. But it would be too much nerdy.

I love IPY because it gave me UO Redemption
mindatlarge 2 years ago
All I got to says is IPY. If you don't know what IPY is then you missed out on 2 years of the best UO times ever.
jamescgale 2 years ago
yeah, second age is awesome. i've tried a few free shards before that never did anything for me. second age is just like i remember UO.
seablue 2 years ago
I just thought I would post that over the last week Ive started playing UO again for free. Google search uosecondage and the shard will come up. Is a very active and populated server (almost always 500 people or more on) and it is perfect. Exactly the way I loved the game before EA destroyed it. I hope to see any of you there.
erem35 2 years ago
Thats where i played for a while, really good free shard.
Blackdreath 2 years ago
Did you ever play IPY?
It was the best ever, and will always be. I've played Orgin servers and I've played player run shards off and on since the beginning. After Azeroth decided to shut down IPY the game was never the same.
jamescgale 2 years ago
Must i have UO`cd to play on this server? Never played uo but i have frends that did.
machiavelli1109 2 years ago
you can download UO client from their site.
Blackdreath 2 years ago
No, as blackdreath said, you can download the entire game from the website. The patcher which is also included with the download will get all the patches you need to be up and running. Just follow the instructions on the website and voila, welcome to UO: The way it was meant to be :)

Well thats a mouthfull. ;)

Yeah its a shame. I really loved this game. To go back and play it all again... :)

honestly listening to this makes me want to start playing again every time, yet I know it's never gonna happen ...

ever heard of freeshards?
Hybrid: UOR shard, 600-1000 people on a day on average.
Defiance: Pretty sure has UOR and AOS. European, but still has a good amount of people on
DarkStar Gaming: My shard, in development.
Games still amazing when your playing on those shards (mines not done yet). If you want to start playing UO again, just msg me.
WolfxxShadow 2 years ago
i'd say the best thing about this game was indeed the consequences...along with the social aspect, which manifested itself in a truly unique and incredible way that has never been replicated to this day. Graphics didn't matter, it was about who had your back and if you could hold your own on the field. It seemed so casual most the time and I think that's a major part of it's earlier success. Casual I say, but also capable of producing some of the most intense pvp i've ever been involved in.
Chronostious 2 years ago 2
free servers are available you guys. like the way it used to be, pre-trammel. just google search

I need the sheet music of this song... please.
If anyone know where I could find it, I be very happy.
UO FOREVER!. I like some things of the AOS. I don´t like the runebook and the gates...

You guys know alot of these "feelings" are becaused you played when you were most likely really young/younger. Nothing wrong with that, just something to consider when biasing =) good game tho, I loved it.

For all the lovers of pre-trammel UO: Check out MO at mortalonline, com. Should be out by Q4

If u stun when u hear that sound, if u feel strange when you hear, u are very old in UO.
Abacan 2 years ago
I remember the first time when I played it (no official server, I´m from Argentina).
It was too big, every day I discovered something new.
DragoonApprentice 2 years ago
You're right I started playing in 97, nothing to this day has touched me personally in regards to all the MMO's I see today. UO just had this magical feel to it, like nothing fancy, just like you're living in a real world, with real consequences.
If you died, it was always a risk that you wouldn't get your gear back, the only magic items were Silver, ruin, might, power vanq, nothing more, nothing less, no factions just player ran guilds.
It was so basic but all good things must end.
panzertrance 2 years ago
yep the age of shadows addition just ruined it all with luna
hunhulio 2 years ago
Get on freeshards. UO Gamers: Hybrid is a UOR server with fellucca only.
600-1000 people on average
Not any customs, but their are rares items that staff give out on the holidays and events like CtF, Bomb Run, and arena tournaments.
It also has custom scripts for Texas Hold'em (big moneymaker), dueling, etc.
Give it a shot, it's still pretty damn fun
WolfxxShadow 2 years ago
I miss the game, but after playing it for 6 years I am glad I quit. It ate my life away like WOW did when it first came out. Fuck online games. I'll never play them or console games again. I have real life shit to do.
jamescgale 2 years ago
Then you die and after a few decades every one forgets you any ways and in the end the only thing that matters is you had fun.
AmnesiacJack 2 years ago 2
Good point lol
jamescgale 2 years ago
yea but is it really more fun than to do stuff in real life?
wyrmguard 2 years ago
Some people find working in the hot sun all day fun. Some people find selling drugs and breaking the law fun. Some people like haggis.
Is it really so weird to think that people might have more fun online than IRL? Obviously it's no replacement, but if I have more fun spending 5 hours on a raid Friday night than I would going out to the bar for 5 hours on a Friday night what's wrong with that?
AmnesiacJack 2 years ago 3
in this world the further become's the past as the past fade's soon into memory. and memory becomes that of the past as well. all i have to say in this matter is if UO die's the beginning of all the mmorpg's well be lost. most do not understand that ultima online started it all.

Aye ...

You are right.

EA has ruined it, who wanna watch elves running with sunglasses in trammel? that's simply not fair for ultima fans :/
pabluuz 2 years ago 2
EA did more than destroy UO, they also destroyed Ultima as a whole. Ultima IX was their monstrosity, and it raped the series. It broke my heart. Hearing this song brings back so many memories.
Hekirou 2 years ago 3
After proper patching Ultima IX is a great game.
Blackdreath 2 years ago
Perhaps if by proper patching you mean completely and utterly changing the story around, then I might agree. But a defining moment of the Ultima series was when Dupre sacrificed his life to restore the balance of a dying world. That was huge - a character who had been a part of the series since Ultima II, an emotional blow to long time fans.
And in Ultima IX he comes back from the dead? No mention at ALL of why he died or what happens to Balance with him no longer a part of the Serpent.
Hekirou 2 years ago
In short: his sacrifice was invalidated and ignored. And I will never forgive EA for destroying the character and the series.
Hekirou 2 years ago 3
100% agree, the story line of Ultima IX was kind of upsetting, but the game play was actually really great...after patching of course. But you aren't the only one who has the feelings about Ultima IX's story. There are countless die hard ultima fans that got teams together to "re-do" ultima IX using Dungeon Siege 2 engines, and one even using The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion engine.
turtal46 2 years ago
The only problem is that I don't own either DS2 or Oblivion, so I can't play either of those : (
Hekirou 2 years ago
I remember playing UO for years. i started in 2000 and loved it. once they added powerscrolls and the likes the game went to complete shit for good. EA totally ruined a perfect game. i even played on player servers like In Por Ylem.

Dnide666 2 years ago
Ah UO... before EA took over, everyone knew how to PVP.. you had to EARN your items, not camp in Doom all damn day... Artifacts killed this game severely...
Setsotama 2 years ago 3
Doom? I quit the game years ago, but started with beta in 96 right after alpha was over. I only know doom is a dungeon from the other ultima games, had no idea they put it in UO...sigh
turtal46 2 years ago
Yeah, it's a good thing you quit before Doom was added. Doom is a place where you fight these Champs Monsters, and at random you get this artifacts which drastically makes the player over-powered like the Hat of Magi and etc.
Not only the artifacts are overpowered but they are so f-in rare that you have people actually staying in Doom for days and months looking for one, and the spawn time is crazy.. they drop like 1 artifact every week or month...
Setsotama 2 years ago
I'm gona cry.
kolan667 2 years ago
wow this brings me back so much... I used to play this game for a ridiculous amount of time each day.... gets me emotional lol
kolan667 2 years ago 2
I know this might seem weird but i agree with terry cause they ruined the game with mondains legacy and all the exp that were not by the orig company i really think the need a new patch like 1999 because i played when i was 4 was born in 1996 cause this version IS SHIT
AkatsukiLeader33 2 years ago
You are so wrong about EA saving the game. Ea Murdered UO. There is a huge player base that plays UO Gamers which is like the old ultima online. About 800 players on one shard at any given time. Compare that to EA and there 80 players if that. IF EA would just change it back to the way it was in 1999 and leave it that way. It would blow up again more than any other online game. I would bet my last dollar on that.
