  • awesome game... classic.

  • Just avoid the friggin' tornadoes, fool! ;)

Yes, when I was five years old, and never had heard the word 'framerate', this game was friggin' awesome.

  • This game looks like shit but in a good way. I love how it totally tries to push the sms beyond what it's capable of. I was a fan of space harrier, after burner and thunder blade on the SMS. This is kind of like their deformed little brother. It's much more forgiving than after burner and thunder blade in the difficulty level. Space harrier looked much better and is still the best of any pseudo 3D shooter on the master system but this one is just plain dumb fun.

  • nice

  • I think maybe you realised you were being a bit harsh here. Bearing in mind the capabilities of the hardware, Galaxy Force was a remarkable achievement.

You're rather unfair on the gameplay, in particular. It certainly isn't random by any stretch of the imagination. And to be fair you weren't really paying attention. That's why you picked the same level twice!

I personally find it very playable, even today. But there you go. I still really enjoy your videos!

  • You're entitled to your opinion, but I stand by every word I said.

  • @creepytennis i agree totally

  • Galaxy Force was a powerful coin-op, so it was difficult to port it to home consoles - especially the 8-bit machines.

I'm all for reviewing retro games based on how they play now - rather than focusing on nostalgia. Nostalgia has its place, but if a game doesn't stand the test of time, accept the fact.

I think Space Harrier on the MS is ok, but I'm not sure how it fares today?

  • This game is After Burner's evil step-brother

  • This was one of my fave games.I played the arcade version first, and actualy having this to play at home felt specail.I always thought even on the SM that it would stand the test of time, but now i don't understand what i saw in the home version, your video Steve has killed my child hood memories lol. Please don't do a video on the arcade,I would still like to think that it is good.

  • The Mega Drive version wasn't much better.

  • This is the type of game that I would have been really bummed to have paid to rent back in the day.

  • I am sure I had this in the C64 and it was S**te on that also

  • puke!!!! man thats bad!!

  • U R teh l33tz :D

  • It looked like it might have had some potential but didn't deliver.

The graphics, at times, were ok (considering its age), except for the tunnels...my God, they'd hurt your eyes if you played them for too long!

The music was awful, the gameplay looked alright, I guess besides it being choppy.

Good SWILL, bad YouTube buffer rate!!!!!!!!!!! :(

  • That's not the YT buffer rate, that's the framerate on the game :P

  • Meh I don't think this game is that bad. I've seen worse on the Master System like the F-16 Fighter game. *shudders*

  • I think I have that game. One of those that came on a card, as opposed to cart?

Hmmm... okay, must check that I haven't done that one already, and if I haven't... I think we have tomorrows game :D

  • Good God!!

What horrific mess. How can such a good After Burner and Space Harrier be on the same system that this was produced for???

What they were trying to accomplish with this game would have worked on the Genesis, but not the Master System.

It is a horrible mess, with nice background graphics and a few cool effects (like the tornado).

But, it obviously plays like shit. Indeed it seems to play like After Burner and Space Harrier...after being mangled in a wood chipper.

  • lol @ wood chipper :D

It really was far too ambitious for the Master System. Like trying to do quantum theory on an abacus.

  • LOL, I don't think it's THAT much more advanced, but I get what you mean.

But, games like this didn't help the Master System win any fans, that's for sure.

  • Nothing wrong with speaking your mind. If you don't like something you should say so. So long as you say only nice things about Atic Atac, Brian Bloodaxe and Dragontorc of Avalon!

    This game looks horrendous.

    Good video (again)

  • I like Atic Atac... though I never actually understood what I was supposed to be doing. Never played the others :)

  • Pink skies? The second stage looks cool, but it looks like they could have done more with this, big time.

  • Did not know there was a port of Galaxy Force for the SMS? I have Galaxy Force II for the Genesis which looks better than this one but i find the game play to be ok which is surprising seeing how much i like Space Harrier and these two games are very much a like.

  • *shudder* I'm with you on this one...!

  • Well at least there's a perfect, or near perfect, arcade port on the Saturn. My least favorite port of this game is on the Genesis/Mega Drive. The controls are too stiff, like Super Thunder Blade, IMO.

  • I can't imagine a worse version than this. That must be bloody awful.

  • "It's appalling!" lmao

Glad you can see the funny side to being "abused" here on Youtube Steve. It's bound to happen if you speak your mind & nobody wants to see that stop happening. Just put up with the abuse xD

  • It gets trying sometimes, but it's never from any of my subscribers, coz you all understand what I'm doing... and that's why I'll keep doing it the way I do it.

That sounds like a bad song :S

  • cool vid. I only have 4 games for the master system and 2 of them are built in. One i can't play as the lightgun doesn't work so i can only play those dodgy sonic ports. I will buy more. this game looks OKish but not my cup of tea.

  • That's just plain dodgy. Looks good for about 27 seconds and then it gets really bad.

  • I think I was taking a nap during those 27 seconds ;)

  • Migraine inducing graphics and gameplay!

    Flockkin' Hell!

  • lol @ flockkin' hell :D

  • God, this looks AWFUL! Games like this were never meant to be romanced with such a system, it just doesn't work!

I'll have to check out the arcade version.

  • The arcade version is actually pretty good! =)

  • I saw a video of it, and yeah, it's very impressive.

  • When a friend picked this up in 1989 we thought this was good and had a load of fun with it. That was until we saw the Arcade version and that did blow us away.

  • That's the thing, back in the day, this probably didn't look so bad. There wasn't too much to compare it too. But yes, I took a look at that arcade version, and it's very impressive.

  • The movement is choppy because this game doesn't use sprites; it uses the background graphics for the enemies and obstacles which can only move block-by-block. The same technique was used in the SMS version of Space Harrier.

  • Shite Harrier. The Megadrive sequel was pretty ropey too.

  • Nothing good about this game, even considering its age. I still love the Master System.

  • Just looks like a sprite swap of Space Harrier with massive cookies ont he ground :D

  • space Harrier with a big chunk of After Burner and a huge dose of craptastic :D

  • This ^

  • I was about to say the same thing but Space harrier was atleast decent.

  • Galaxy Force does look pretty bad.

  • cool game ,retro indeed ...nicely retro cool :D
