Respond to this video...But Hicks grew up in Texas. These men shared plenty of views, but it must have been a lot harder for Hicks to espouse them in Texas than it was for Carlin to espouse them in NYC or California, despite the generational difference between the two. Plus, Hicks came up at a time when it seemed Carlin was largely ignoring political humor in favor of topical humor (I'm talking the early 80s). With the Vietnam War over, it seemed like Carlin somewhat mellowed (until 1988).
@DamnDogNow I think Carlin is funnier and more important, although that is ultimately subjective. I will say this: Hicks' transformation of thought was arguably more admirable than Carlin's. I'm not speaking of the thoughts themselves, but the fact of the transformation. Carlin came from an urban, multi-cultural environment (NYC) that would have nurtured his tenancies. His major obstacles were a conservative generation and religion. Once he broke free of those, he became himself.
@Alphabex8 I only read my Joseph Smith stuff drin 32 oz. coffees & smoke (kind of a Jack Mormon) in public at Waffle House. To get away from my 8 nagging wives & 16 kids.
This kind of makes me sad. I'm from TN and I work in Waffle House. I don't really see a problem with that. I know you're not supposed to take offense in the field of comedy, but damn! I don't understand why servers at Waffle House receive such a bad reputation.
@xrlk72 You are just saying that because Lewis hasn't died... yet. As soon as he croaks you will be all "Good ol' Lewis... he was the best there was!" People like you make me sick!
@ultramegachikken Orrrr maybe Lewis Black just isn't as good as Hicks or Carlin was? Ever think of that? Lewis Black is funny, but he's not at Carlin/Hicks level.
you're all wrong! Lenny Bruce goes at the top of that list. he inspired all those comedians. in fact Geroge Carlin was arrested with Bruce spent a night in jail with him and it changed his life
he knew the secret, and was taken from us before he could reveal it .... Wonderful comedian, great entertainer, speaker of the truth ... gone and sadly missed!
He revealed all of his "secrets", and what he considered truth in his lifetime.
I am very sad that he is gone. And, that the world cannot hear his comedy anymore. But, it is up to you and me to continue spreading his message, in his ( and our ) honor.

as much as I like Bill Hicks, most of his alleged encounters, like the one above, and the ones with cops, are made up events. I think he is the greatest comic ever btw, but the story about the waitress is not true.
It's actually quite the opposite, most comedians base their material on real life events. Sometimes when they refer to another person in a story it's actually them. Louis CK's "everything is amazing, no one is happy" bit was based on his reaction to not getting what he wanted instantaneously.

I really like Lewis but I wouldn't give him the status of Hicks and Carlin, at least not yet. Also you definitely have to throw Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce into that list.
@18thseason with you on that Lewis is great but not quite a Bill Hicks or Carlin. Pryor, Bruce certainly rank up there and among contemporary comedians, Doug Stanhope has the balls and truth to make it to the list.
@kuroganeblack The big three what? Comics you think had the same ideology as you? You're even wrong about that, Lewis Black and Carlin have very little in common even ideologically, let alone in talent.
Oh how I would have LOVED his material for the last 8 years. He hated Bush Sr. pretty bad so I can only imagine his stuff on dubbya, 9/11, reality TV, the state of rock music and movies, the patriot act...
