  • When Rush did the remake of Paint it Black, the king had Neiled to kiss charlie watts's hand.

  • Give me Charlie Watts over Neil any day. There's a difference between creating drum parts to make a classic song and flashy drum kits and self-indulgent drum solos. Charlie has the swing, baby!

  • @siomig Let me guess....you are 68? i'm close aren't I? It's all good man, to each his own but nobody born after 1970 will pick Charly Watts over Neil Peart. That's like picking Ringo Starr over John Bonham. But yes, Peart looks up to Watts, not the other way around.

    Cheers

  • @xianshino I'm 24, born in 1986. It's a question of individual preference: technical ability/virtuosity vs. groove/feeling. I highly doubt that age is an important factor.

  • Neil Peart and Charlie Watts together? Beside each other? and theres VIDEO OF IT? :D:D

  • Sorry, but I think Mr. Watts is the Professor's hero, not the other way around.

  • I love Neil, but the statement that he is Charlie's hero is simply idiotic unless it came directly from Charlie - which would surprise me very much. It's irresponsible. It's not because he is your hero that everyone else has to view him the same way.

  • hey he's "Nobody's Hero"....pun intended.:) all drummers have something positive to contribute, no matter the skill level.

  • besides, Neil Peart is an asshole.

  • @Riconnaissance How much weed it takes to say that

  • @LivingInTheLimeligh7 as good as Peart is, Mike Portnoy is the most techically proficient rick drummer compared to both he and Watts,. Not to mention Peart and Rush in general have no feeling and soul to most of their music. I hate it when people confuse "favorite" drummer" with "best drummer". Portnoy may not be the best, but he's better than Peart in almost every way. Sorry, Rush fan, just because you like Peart doesn't change the fact that Portnoy is more skilled.

  • @Riconnaissance I just fell of my seat in laughter when i read that. No i didn't say he is my favorite, even though he is. And yes, Portnoy is a hell of a drummer, but Neil Peart is better nonetheless. Ignore this if you are trying to come up with something, cause i don't care. And previously you said Neil Peart is an asshole?Have you even ever watched his drum solos? Im not going to waste my time here so - bye.

  • @LivingInTheLimeligh7 good for you, i'm glad you find it funny. like i care what the opinion of a teenager is who still doesn't have a clue about life. i've listened to Rush for longer than you've been on this earth so big deal if you disagree. but i'm talking rock anyway, not other styles which I would agree Portnoy would come in 2nd to Peart. as far as Neil being an asshole, what does that have to do with his soloing? He is an asshole because of his disdain for his fans, whom he can't stand.

  • @Riconnaissance Well fine then.

  • @Riconnaissance

no feeling or soul? =\ idk, spirit of the radio has some serious movement powers within it.

  • @TOSYuan3195 I'm speaking generally; of course there are exceptions. Neil's style is mechanical, mathematical, precise. Not necessarily a bad thing--but he lacks groove, feeling, life, in his playing. That's not to say he doesn't ever give an emotive performance, but even when he does, it feels like a machine; like a Swiss timepiece. Cf. with something like Bonzo's "Fool in the Rain" shuffle for instance. Watch him solo: great skill, but no soul. He can play a jazz piece, but he can't play jazz.

  • @Riconnaissance

you're a troll and i feel sad for your stupid comment

  • It's actually "Charlie", not "Charly".

And as far as rock is concerned, Portnoy owns both of them. And I am not even that big of a fan of his.

  • Both of them love jazz drummers - Neil did his Buddy Rich records (and plays his ass off on jazz too). Charlie probably knows him through that.

  • @unlikeanyotherhuman yeah, that is odd...to go from timberlake to burton cummings. agreed.

  • The first time I heard "Fly By Night" I thought Neil was an octopus. "Only two arms couldn't do that!", I thought.

  • It is pretty funny and a little scary to read all the pontificating by the reems of experts here about Charlie and Neil. I'm in my 50's and I can say modestly that I know a little of the inner workings of these guyws, particularily the Stones. I was in the lounge with them in the four seasons as soon as they arrived in Toronto from Europe and we spent an hour or so talking. Most of what has been posted about the drummers is BS.

  • Both great drummers, and Watts' work, as incredible as it is with the Stones, is only part of styles he is fluent in. Both drummers love and play jazz outside of their respective bands.

  • I believe you. Why wouldn't another drummer look up to Neil Peart? Why is that so hard to believe? It doesn't go by who's been playing longer, or "famous" longer, or who's "older" or any of that. It goes by talent, style, tech nique, and inpiration. I look "up" to many Musicians who could be younger, less experienced, etc. because they INSPIRE me. We all feed off of each other! I was at SARS to see RUSH. I'll see them again July 13 in TO. OOh yeaheayeah, wow yeah, Wo ooh YEAH!!!

  • BEACUSE NEIL PEART RULESSS

  • @cristobaldominguez its the other way around charlie watts thinks neil peart is god

  • this title i think should be reveresed(mistake)

  • Both Neil and Charlie are rock drummers who have a deep appreciation for jazz. They have more in common musically then you might think....not to mention their bands don't know when to retire. lol

  • I won't pretend to know for sure..any of this, but being a Rush fan for years, my take on it would be....Neil grew up listening to the Stones ,among others....and respects Charlie Watts...but I have never gotten the impression the Stones were at the top of Neil Peart's favourites list , as a band. As far as what Charlie Watts thinks of Neil...well, seeing that Neil is world renownned , Charlie Watts must have been at least aware of Neil Peart prior to this concert., but who knows.

  • Two great drummers!

  • Read Traveling Music by Neil Peart, he describes how he didn't recognise Charlie at first! Geddy found it funny lol :-)

  • i heard that charlie stayed out of the party scene most of the time.... durning thier wild years.

  • Read "Roadshow", I think, by Peart. He describes this interaction and how Watts was/is one of his drumming idols.

  • Even drummers from the old guard look up to Neil Peart.

  • all the great drummers look up to peart they idol him

  • You cannot compare the musical proficiency of the (3 chords and a single time signature) Rolling Stones with that of Rush. Rush are in a totally different world musically.

  • Come on peeps, it's a joke, although, Charley could be a fan. Who knows...

  • How could anyone possibly think Neil Peart is Charlie Watts' hero? Watts and the Stones had been touring the world for over a decade, with dozens of hits, when Neil first joined Rush. Their styles couldn't be more different.

  • I'm not saying Charlie is better than Neil (it's apples and oranges), just that there's no way Neil is Charlie's hero, because the order in history is backwards. That would be like Eddie Van Halen being Jimmy Page's hero, or Barry Bonds being Willie Mays' hero.

  • The order of history has no bearing on heroship - if someone comes along later and proves thmeselves worthy to a veteran, then it's their choice to honor

    them as hero.

  • i think the title is probably reversed...cuz neil loves the stones and charlie watts

  • That would be the logical thing to think, but read the comments of the original poster. He didn't accidentally switch it around. He either believes it (and doesn't know drumming or rock history very well) or is just screwing with us.

  • You don't have to be older than someone to be thier hero.

  • I could think it,and thats TRUE

  • @StillH2O I think he had it reveresed

  • Comment removed

  • @StillH2O

I think peart's his hero in terms of technical skill and speed...not in terms of who sold more records...

  • @TOSYuan3195 I don't think you understand the meaning of the word "hero". It means someone who is admired by another. Just because one person is better at something than another does not make that person the other's hero.

  • @StillH2O Maybe Charlie realizes when a drummer is so much better than he is.

  • neil said on anatomy of a drum solo that he is a buddy rich fan

  • I think you mean neil is a fan of charlie dumb dumb

  • Neil has said many times that Charlie is a big influence of his. Though it would seem that Charlie is Neil's hero, it can be argued that they both are big fans of each other, considering all that each of them has accomplished. You certainly don't hear that Charlie's drum solo was put up for a Grammy, but Charlie is one of the most revered drummers in rock history. It's just good that they got to mutually enjoy meeting each other. Think they got in a tickle fight afterward?

  • I never heard that, many drummers are neil influence like krupa, rich but not this basic drummer,I think you are inventing those crap comment

  • Don't be dumb, Watts has served as the backbone for one of the most successful bands ever for like 35/40 years.

  • @cristobaldominguez You are inventing crap comments and theories, you fucking pile of shit. Go fuck yourself!

  • @an04RoadKing Charlie Watts is more revered for his position in the Rolling stones, and not killing jagger than for his drumming skills!

  • I should smack you,,, king of assholes

  • why (and how) do they suck and why do you want to smack geddy lee in the mouth?

  • just not a fan of geddy lee, can't do his voice, i've tried. but everyone is different, I'm a big fan of neil young, and a lot of people cant take his voice.

Hope thats more of a politically correct response.

  • Neil Peart is the Chuck norris of drums

  • The bald headed guy in the middle with the AC/DC T shirt is Rick St.Pierre, Wizard Amps creator and guitar tech for Angus Young...I played drums for Rick in a Band called Sledge Rock Group in the 70's.

  • Neil was probably in awe. Many of these bands who are younger than the Stones were influenced by them. Neil is a damn good drummer, but Charlie is classic and you can't deny that.

  • true flexy633, and it is cool to see rush (who is still even considered an older band) is still younger than the stones and look up to them. but charlie DEFINITELY knows how good Neil is and would be the first to admit he's not better than him.

  • Well well well... Charlie is coffee and milk (at least with the Stones), whereas Peart is a whole range of fine cocktails... if you know what I mean...! Peart is simply one of the Gods of percussion, period.

  • Yeah, that'd be like saying John Bonham meets his hero Stewart Copeland. I mean Copeland is a great drummer in his own right, but he's no Bonham.

  • I think it is safe to say that Neil looks up to Charlie, as well he should, he's just only the drummer for the Stones.

  • Cut to the chase, Charlie is cool but Neil is King

  • yeah you know !!!!

  • seriously, safe to say the Stones a little higher on the rock hierarcy...up there with Zep/Bealtes/Who etc.

  • Actually it's pronounced Pee-e(a)rt, not that you would even care anyway. You seem rather deluded. A hero can be anyone of any age. Just because Charlie is a little more 'seasoned' than Neil does not mean that he can revere this great player and be influenced by him.

  • Yeah, I feel compelled to chime in here in support of ol' Charlie. He might not be the technician player Peart is, but he is, in my opinion, glorious on the drums, the way he hangs back on the beat and lifts the Stones tunes. He's subtle. It's unfair to compare these two players, really. It would be like comparing Bill Bruford to Ringo Starr. Bruford is a drumming god, but the Beatles would have been a lesser band with that kind of a drummer in their fold.

  • i've been drumming for about 15 yrs now and i can honestly say charlie watts does not in any way suck he has proving himself and stood the test of time not many drummers remain on the scene or the same band for all these years by just being mediorcre they are both great drummers and my mentors who i proudly look up to

  • ...im not comparing them, theyre two great drummers from different eras of music (sort of) im just saying that charlie has been around longer than neil and therefore could have potentially been an influence for him. neil is an amazing drummer, im in no way saying that charlie is better or worse, simply that he is of a different style. personally i like charlie better. thats more just because i dont like rush as much as the stones.

  • ...charlie watts' hero neil peart? i think its probably the other way around there...

  • agreed definitley!!

  • you probably dont know Neilpeart so,Charly watts sucks as a drummer

  • I think Neil would probably punch you in the nose for saying that about Charlie

  • YOU CANT COMPARE GOD NEIL PEART WITH A COMMON DRUMMER LIKE chw

  • you probably dont know to much about drums

  • Sorry that was supposed to be a reply to the dude that played for Rick St Pierre

  • "charlie said hello to neil" does not mean that neil is charlie's hero.

  • Nicke1873: ITA that ephilosopher is annoying. But...woaaaah! lol!

  • hes so freaking lucky im jealous

  • Like seeing DeNiro and Pacino in HEAT.

  • well said

  • ePhilosopher, none of your comments make sense. Die in a fire.

  • ya wut he said lol

  • That was cool. Long Live Rock-N-Roll.

  • I know fuck all about drumming but when the "drummer's drummer" Neil Peart writes that Charlie Watts is great (and Ringo iirc?) then that's good enough for me.

  • charlie is a simple but great drummmer, and a cool guy

  • was that burton cummings at the end?

  • Haha cummings.

  • I've seen both these bands numerous times and I have to say Charlie has the best live sound I have ever heard, with a kick drum that feels like it's hitting you in the chest, and a groove like a machine, but Neil is...well...Neil. Need I say more?

  • I heard when compared to a metronome that Charlie Watts had the best timing amongst pro drummers. But who knows, the world is however like the internet, full of liars. Charlie Watts and Neil Pearts facial expressions are few and far between if you ever watch them. They seemed detached.

  • So why aren't you the first in line to buy tickets then? I heard you can take 12 inches of meat down that throat-hole of yours...

  • Want to KILL you for being DUMB...but got to understand that there are IGNORANT asshats in the world like yourself.

  • HAHAHAH! SUUUUUUURE THEY DO SON, SUUUURE THEY DO...

I was browsing online for some good drum workshop DVDs (Terry Bozio, Neil Peart, etc) and I found a Watts DVD called: How to SUCK ASS in drums and live on the limelight at the expense of my bandmate's success.

  • whatever.... There both richer than the state of California and draw thousands of people every show. But Peart is still in another league.

  • Stop calling Charlie Watts Neil Peart's "fellow legend". He's not even close to Peart's level...

  • dudeeee, watts has a bettttter groove than neil.

  • Hahahaha... What a waste of SPERM... shoot yourself dude.

  • The bald headed guy in the middle with the AC/DC T shirt is Rick St.Pierre, Wizard Amps creator and guitar tech for Angus Young...I played drums for Rick in a Band called Sledge Rock Group in the 70's.

  • really? and you like Rush also?

  • Wizard Amps KILL. What is Rick's problem? He is not getting the product out there! There is a lot of Marshall\Mesa\HiWatt\H&K\Orange\VHT\Bogner dissatisifaction, he could cash in on..

  • backsticking

    more cowbell... less sympathy... echoechoecho

  • muttville1 your such a faggot, I hope you know that

  • oh keef186 is your countryman boyfriend, aren't you sweet stickin up for him. i'm really touched

  • Muttville's so lonely he crying for attention.

  • boooooo hooooooo! dont't ever talk about my english.

  • thats all u got? thats what i thought...checkmate!!

  • anyway you cant compare a basic drummer like CHW with god Neil Peart,,galaxies of difference

  • Oh shit not you again. You seem like a smart guy why don't you find it yourself?

Notice how all of your comments have negative votes? That means that nobody likes your comments so why bother?

  • first off its vote not votes(hmmmm, i wonder who did that) second i am not very bright so i am STILL waiting for a answer. i will be here if u can come up with 1, good luck & talk to u soon i hope.

  • Your English is impecable!

  • These guys both have a mutual admiration for the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich.

When this clip was filmed, Neil Peart had no idea that it was Charlie Watts from the Stones who was talking to him and you can see him smile once he realized who it was.

  • R U Kidding me? who in the hell doesnt know charlie + he is a fellow legend + he was on the same bill + oh i give up. i hope u dont really think this is the case.

  • Here's the story taken directly from the RUSH website jerkoff:

  • ok smart guy where on the site?

  • well????

  • "Finally, it was showtime...A short, older man stepped up to me, sticking out his hand an saying something I couldn't hear. Thinking, 'Now who's this?' I took out one of my ear monitors and said, 'Sorry, I couldn't hear you.' He spoke again, smiling, 'Hello, I'm Charlie Watts.' 'Oh!' I said, taken aback, 'Hello.' And I shook his hand. He asked if we were going on soon, and I said yes, any minute, and he said, with a twinkle, 'I'm going to watch you!

  • I love this story! And, Neil's recollection of the show in his book "Traveling Music". The poor guy was SO nervous! And then, Mr. Watts says, "I'm going to watch you!"

  • Several years ago Neil ripped on the Stones (in an interview) for playing music that wasn't very challengable and not being that great of musicians. He didn't seem to have much respect for them, at time. I could be wrong. The transcript of the interview could have been wrong.

  • I doubt Neil would act like that but then again people have their private lives and maybe he matured? who knows.

  • oh ya it was wrong,100% wrong.

  • Dead on correct. Neil told Creem magazine in 1981 "You can't call the Rolling Stones musicians....can you?"

    Direct quote.

  • Thanks for the corroboration.

  • I heard that Charley Watts was the closest thing to a metronome out there as far as keeping exact time. I personally am a bigger fan of Neil. I dreamed I met them the other day. Weird! I dig Alex as one of my all time favorite guitar players. Always did his own thing and did it with feeling.

  • Great to see "Mr Ellwood" displaying a little humility despite (IMHO) having more talent in his left arm than Charlie Watts ever had :-)

  • it's called respect for a fellow legend drummer like himself, not who is better or that kind of crap.

  • he is def. more talented though. but hey- they're the ones out there gettin paid and we're not so...

  • he is & money has nothing to do with this.

  • They're gettin paid to do what WE love. Wish I was gettin that.......

  • me to especially at their pay scale!i've grown accustom to free beer & party favors for my talents.

  • haha agreed. i'll take it all day though.

  • the consortium of genius
