That said, it was on purpose. The director wanted to do a Sandman movie, and the studio force him to use Venom and New Goblin for ratings so he threw them in but still tried to use Sandman. He knew it wouldn't work, but basically said F-U I'm putting my Sandman in here cause I love him.
Superman could be totally kick yes, they need to stop worrying about copying the realism scheme and go all out. Make a crazy scifi action movie, giant robots, and Godzilla monster, Superman could handle them, and it would look so badass! Besides, Super have fatigue, and usually when monsters show it it's cloudy.
Darkseid, Doomsday, Metallo, Bizarro, Ultraman, Lex with Kryptonite powers and suits, Braniac, Zod (eh let's go on brake from him in the movies) and other Kryptonians. Seriously, he has a rogues gallery which can actually give him a fight but they RARELY properly use it. It never made sense to have an uber super hero but then give him barely any uber super villains to combat him.
That's the thing, i think they hold him back because they want to make an uber movie for an massive fight but never have the direction and pitches that can pull it off, and unluckily it looks like the new movie that comes out in a year has Zod xD but as we know it's supposed to be a 3 parter so i think we'll get a little bit of the big villians hopefully they'll take a little bit of Smallvile glamour with them

Say what you want about Smallville and or its cast and how it handles the mythos (I personally am a big fan of Smallville and it actually got me to change my entire opinion about Superman mythos thanks to SOME of the modern direction they took which actually made it more relateable and interesting) but it definitely handled Clark/Superman actually having people who were constant threat to him outside magic, radiation and kryptonite far better than all the movies combined.

@GSlice37 100% agreement with you but hollywood always wants to make things needlessly complicated for no reason. With the movie following up on Smallville they could skip the origin story which most people know already and get straight to the important stuff. Plus they'd have the great benefit of having a good deal of the Smallville fanbase on board so that's financial insurance right there if they ever needed any.

I would like to add another comment: I would like to draw atention to the fact that this parody can be interpreted as criticizing superman's exaggerated power. I have never liked superman, because he is just too strong. And this parody, although probably not intending, highlights that: superman doesnt have any enemies that match him unlike spiderman with venom and green goblin for example.
For all the fans who like a bit of intellectualism in their comics, myself included, you have to appreciate the irony of a hero who wants nothing more than to connect with his homeworld, but whose greatest weakness is a piece of that world.
You ask me, Brainiac and Luthor are the greatest Superman villains. You can keep your Bizarros and General Zods and Solomon Grundys and Metallos; you can even keep Darkseid. Just give me someone who can show that brains are just as important as braun.

Really hope they brush the spiderman 3 Venom to one side and say it was a fake or a weaker symbiote so that we can get a proper full blown venom at some point with him being the only villain to focus on in the movie.

When you consider that Returns is meant to be the third movie in continuity, he's really only had to deal w/Kryptonite once before.
Then he had THREE Kyryptonian criminals to fight all the way across Metropolis, all the way to teh North Pole.

i found on google a guy called doomsday. he looks so awesome in the comics and apparantly hes so strong he killed superman or something on those lines. a movie with him would be Epic i recon. lex luther is so Dull ive never sat through a whole superman film.

Really hope they brush the spiderman 3 Venom to one side and say it was a fake or a weaker symbiote so that we can get a proper full blown venom at some point with him being the only villain to focus on in the movie.

Death and life of superman, 3-parter (like the books), Doomsday would be part 1. Oh how I wish they would make it. I would even understand if they compressed books 2 and 3 into one with the arrival of darkseid (if I remember right), just keep all the suporting cast intact.
