My dog only does that when hes REALLY pissed. I think the reason the dog hasn't bitten you yet is because of sheer respect, you probably treat it good other than this occasional event.

My Chihuahua Quinton does the EXACT same thing. He looks like he's growling, but he's not. He's been doing it his entire life (9 years) and he often gives kisses while 'growling'. It freaks people out, but he's never bitten or snapped at anyone. He just has an odd way of showing affection.

I'm not sure why people assume that just because a dog is growling that it is angry or has any ill feeling at all. Maybe one day when you people actually own and understand a dog, you'll find out. Dogs can growl and bear their teeth and be playing at the same time...the anger is in their eyes and the rest of their body language.
