in my humble opinion, after Schubert, Moussorgsky is probably one of the greatest song writers...his songs are so powerful, so poignant, so penetrating, so tender, so yearning, so sad, so thoughtful, so melodious, and so unforgettable, even if you are like me and can't understand a word of Russian.
In "Faust" Goethe ))) Words for this song is russian translate of one of the Mephistofel's monologue. Monologue, of course, about the flea...try to find :)
Great performance and voice! The song is totally ridiculous and lovable and quite a masterpiece on Mussorgsky's part. Lawrence Tibbett did a fantastic performance in English and should be heard by anyone who loves this genre.
I think it was just a song. I don't know if it was originally intended as being part of an opera as with a few other Mussorgsky songs, but I don't think so.
@Gabba02 Well, if it ever was a part of an opera, it would have to be Faust and the character Mefistofele, as it is actually taken from the famous scene from Goethe's work...
@abbeast22 This is one song of a cycle called The Nursery. It's based on Goethe's Faust, in which Mephistopheles sings a song about a king who found a flea that amused him, made it a member of the royal court and treated it like a son. The flea invites its friends in and the ladies of the court find themselves infested with fleas.

This is simply outstanding. Nesterenko shows superb equilibrium between the beauty and the insanity of the song.

It is one of the Mephistopholes serenades, written late in his life. It stands as a member of this set of songs and not an opera.

was this just a random song mussorgsky wrote, or was it part of an opera?
