You just mix Tylose powder with fondant. If you look for Aine2 on my friends list or subscriptions on my channel you can find the awesome video she made that shows you how to make homemade gumpaste. :)
Do you think you could possibly make a video step by step on how you decorate a cake. i do love this karate cake if you could share a few of the technics used. By the way your work looks awesome.
Thank you so much Essie! I'm so happy you liked this cake! It's one of my favorites! I've never been able to make a tutorial video because my time is so limited between my full time job as a teacher and my cake business. :) I can direct you to a friend of mine here on YouTube who has SEVERAL decorating tutorials. She is a Wilton instructor and she is awesome! Her name is Edna. Her user name is Tonedna1 and you can find her on my friends list or on my subscriptions. :)
Thanks to you and your sis! :) Those Chinese symbols were so fun to make! The red belt was gumpaste that I made using an extruder, it kinda makes it into the shape of spaghetti! :) Thank you so much for your kind words! :)
lol Spaghetti! :P I like it (Have you ever considered making a Mario cake, just for fun to show the world? I would love that :) Im terrible at writing chinese symbold, even with a fountain pen :( and they do it with giant paintbrushes on Takeshi's Castle (Japanese gameshow :P)
when you eat and cut the cake, do you take the fondant off? and does marshmellow fondant taste good? any tips cause im gonna make 2 fondant cakes for my friends birthday
You don't take the fondant off. It's icing and should be eaten. This is why you want to make sure that your buttercream icing is not TOO thick because they should be eating the fondant. The marshmallow fondant I've made is DELICIOUS. I use KRAFT brand mini-marshmallows. Good luck with the b-day cake! Let me know how it turns out! :)
Hi Laura, this cake is fab! I am taking a cake decorating nightclass - a sugarpaste tip from my tutor to avoid wrinkles and creases is not to roll the sugarpaste too thin! Hope this helps - Jacqui x
hi me again....did u say the red was all white fondant that u painted the entire tier? or u only painted the pearls ? i cant seem to get such a great shade of red. same w my black of course. the two toughest shades. also, how did u transfer the characters to the tiles? thanks for ur help
Hi again! :) I colored the fondant red and then I repainted it with red luster dust and vodka to give it that shine and shimmer. I use the Red Red from AmeriColor. It's the most awesome red I've found to date! I hand painted the chinese characters onto the white gumpaste tiles. Loads of fun! :)
hi laurapoopie. :-) i'm a big fan of mayen's. and now that i've discovered yours, ur pretty great yrself. i've done a few, but not so great w the camera to do a video. anyway....i saw u asked about the shortening/crisco. one drawback is that u can NOT paint on it. I used it to make a character mold. so the clothes were already on the mold & i didnt do the indiv clothes in fondant. i tried to paint w color paste & vodka, but it kinda just smeared. hope this helps
Hi there! Yes, unfortunately I had to learn the hard way that once you add shortening to the fondant, it won't allow the absorption of color... Bummer... Oh well, live and learn right? LOL! Thank you for the wonderful compliment BTW! :)
Very neat cake Laura! I love the contrast of white, red and black. The Chinese symbols look great too. With regards to kneading the fondant, I don't actually use cornstarch until I'm rollling the fondant out as it will tend to dry it out too much. And you only have to use a little shortening on your fingertips when kneading, so it doesn't have the same effect as applying shortening after you've covered the cake. Sticking things is no problem. Hope that makes sense.
That makes absolute perfect sense. Now that I think of it, it's the amount of cornstarch I've been adding while kneding the fondant that is probably drying out my fondant. I will definitely try what you suggested on my next cake! Thanks for taking the time! :)
Hi Laura, I was so excited to log onto youtube just now and see you'd done another cake! This cake is so great! Can I ask you, with your red fondant, do you colour it yourself? I am going to attempt to make a 'red' and 'yellow' m&m's characters cake this week (im very nervous!) I hope I can get the fondant really red. Ive also never used gum paste before, Ive been told to just use fondant and add tylose powder so I bought some. I'm hoping this works, do you know much about that?
Hi Danni! First of all, thanks for the compiment! :) Yes, I do color my own fondant, but I think I will begin to start buying precolored fondant in whatever colors they are available. It sure will cut down on prep time! I don't buy gumpaste anymore. I just add tylose to fondant and it works GREAT! I'm sure your M & M's cake will come out amazing! Let us all know when it's up so we can take a look ok?! :)
Very cute. Don't worry about the creases practice makes perfect. You make some really nice cakes, very creative. Try using vegetable shortening to roll your fondant if the cornstarch is drying it out. I usually warm my fondant for about 15 sec in the microwave so that it rolls out easier and it doesn't dry as fast. Well if you didn't already know that I hope it helps.
Hi sunnysky2005! Yes, practice does make perfect! I hope to one day have a so called "perfect" cake. I seriously doubt it though. Yes, microwaving the fondant does certainly help! ;) Question though, when using shortening on the fondant, does that create a problem when you're trying to stick fondant decorations on the cake? I've actually used shortening on the fondant and later the water wouldn't absorb into the fondant and wouldn't allow things to stick! Let me know if you know ok? Thanks!
Hi Laura, this is a wonderful cake - very stylish! I'll send you a link to show you how to cover the cake without the wrinkles. It's in pictures with instructions & it's great!
I love this cake! I think you did a great job! I have a question its probably stupid but i must ask it. When you use luster dust does it have to be the same color as the fondant? Can you use white luster dust on for example red fondant to make it look shimmery or do you need to use red luster dust. i have not tried to use luster dust yet but i am going to attempt it next week on my grandmothers b-day cake.
Hi Tessy, To be honest with you, I've never tried using luster dust that's NOT the same color as the fondant. I'm sure it would add shimmer but don't know if it would drastically change the color of the fondant. You may or may not want this to happen. Now, the luster dust doesn't have to be the exact shade of color as the fondant. For example, the fondant I used for the nija star is grey but the luster dust was silver. Let me know if this answers your question ok? Thanks for the kind words!
LOVE THIS!!! Red's my favorite color too...all the details make it perfect. Dont worry about the creases much -- when you make your cut on the fondant... leave about an inch or so and then transfer the cake on top of a large can that has a smaller circumference thank the cake -- and then you can adjust and smooth out the edges and lessen the creases. so for the first try dont smooth it down all the way yet. i saw this on the fun with fondant video. but to me this is perfect!!!
Thanks Mayen! You love RED too! Isn't it just the best color in the world??!!! I'm so glad you liked it and thank you for the advice! I can totally picture what you're saying and how that will drastically decrease the amount of creases! I will definitely try it the next time I make a cake! Thanks for watching the vid and for your advice! Can't wait to see your next vid! Hope your little boy and your husband are doing well amiga! :)
Hey Laura, this cake is well put together! I love the karate star! I'm not sure if this helps on the creases at the bottom or not but if you make the fondant a way bigger circle than you need you have more to work with. Keep fanning it out as you press the fondant smooth. Hope that helps. Awesome job!
Hi jaskerry! You know what? You're right... Because I've noticed that in the majority of places there aren't any creases and now that I think of it, THOSE were the areas that had no creases... I will definitely try it all around next time! Thanks! :)
Ha! That's hilarious! I'm LMAO!!! Thank you so much! Yes, those creases are B-R-U-T-A-L!!!! Don't worry, one day we'll get it right! Thanks for all your sweet words! ;)
Laura!!! I absolutely luv this cake!!! And u sooo hit home with me on the fondant creases at the bottom, that is my biggest problem when covering my cakes!! But this KARA-TE cake turned out gorgeous really!! Ditto with Rylan on the nunchucks, they are so cute! I have been wanting for a while to try an asian style cake, I love Asian culture, my house is even all decorated this way!! And hey lady u stole my favorite color here! Red n dark red (burgundy) are my absolute favs!! KUDOS to you! G
Oops sorry but I think I was talking about something else. Were the fmm mold half pearls? because I think edna had a tutorial with the half pearls from "First Impression" and when i checked FMM molds from globalsugar, it looked like a different mold. I'm quite confused on which mold you used for the pearls since it looked like full pearls.
Hi Rylan! Thank you for all your kind words! Yes, the pearls are half pearl molds from First Impressions... I don't know where the heck I got FMM from? That's hilarious! Gonna edit my video. The pearls were amzingly easy to make! I couldn't believe how easy it was! The pearls did cover all the seams. The pan sizes I used were 10", 8", & 6". I originally wanted each tier to be about 6" high, but only ended up making them about 4". The top tier was 6" though... Thanks for watching! :)
At first I didn't think half pearls would look good to cover seams BUT when I saw this video, In my head I was like "Now I really need to get this". Thanks for the info!
Don't forget the nunchucks, It's my favorite. Looks like its something you can actually pick up and use. Btw, you mentioned that it was a lot shorter, what pan sizes did you use in here btw? And did the pearls cover all the seams in between layers ?(I was wondering since it was half pearls)
Laura, THIS CAKE is my FAVORITE cake that you've made so far. The karate star is totally awesome! especially with its sharp edges. The "words" look so clean, it looks like it was printed out of the printer. The colors are fabulous, it makes the karate theme feel more adult and sophisticated. The rope in the other hand looks so real, thumbs up for that. and I'm really surprised to see how GREAT the pearls turned out, knowing that they are half pearls. I think I should purchase it too.
