clean coal is clean enough , high gas prices & high cigarette prices along with banning clean coal only means slow economic recovery for the U.S. any more poisonous nuclear power plants, radioactive mines & radioactive dump sites
so im been sittin here readin and i see that some of yall dont support coal well did you yall kno that coal provides over 80% of job in eastern KY, souhwest VA, and WV,and yall want it gone if if they do,do away with coal than alot of ppl will lose there job and yall dont care, these men lay between two pieces of rock and give there life to power the USA and to support there familys so go ahead throw coal down but when all this other shit that want to use dont work dont start bitchin bout it
Joe Biden the consumate pollitician. a man that would tell you one thing and do just the opposite. Why has he not said one thing on the senate floor about how much he hates dirty coal? That is right he is taling out of his arse.
I love these idiots who say carbon is harmless. If you really think that it is then put a plastic bag over your head and leave it there for 10 minutes and report back to me what you discovered. ((((( one plastic bag=2 cents, one idiot coal lackey 4 cents= one more brain dead brainless idiot= priceless
Carbon Dioxide is NOT a pollutant. Plants breathe carbon dioxide in, and breath oxygen out. The only way humans affect the climate is when they turn the HAARP on, or cause the Gulf Stream Current to stop from an oil spill. Anything else is just a bunch of bs that the global elites are using to make money.
They want to name an elementary school in Delaware after Joe Biden. It is up to a vote - anyone in the country can vote - goto VoteNoToJoe . com for a ballot. Must be mailed back by Jan 31st.
Belive it or not Free energy is real,But there are very powerfull forces that want to supress the technology,if you want a real Free energy Magnet Motor, get the blueprints at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Start the revolution!
This is my last attempt to warn everyone out there... please look up FEMA PRISON CAMPS!! I cannot believe people would waste their time to watch "charlie bit my finger" but they can't take out just 1 minute to look at the truth that's all around us. Look up FEMA PRISON CAMPS everyone!! We must know the truth before the army starts herding everyone into these concentration camps! When the day comes when everyone is imprisoned... I'm gonna say FUCK YOU ALL for not listening to me!
"The cheapest way to stop global climate change is not converting to
solar power or buying a hybrid car. It's putting on a condom.
That's the conclusion of a London School Of Economics study showing money spent on contraception is five times more efficient than money spent on clean energy technologies. It backs up a recent Oregon State University study tha
t concludes overpopulation and massive immigration is the single biggest threat to the environment." NUMBERSUSA(DOT)COM
China will stop building coal plants???? Please explain that liberal logic further.... Your punishing America, while the rest of the world is going to take ALL the manufacturing jobs over the next 3 decades because it will be even more cheaper to do business overseas. Good call. Now go see the Wizard for a brain.
Yeah clean coal dosent exists; Evergreen Energy didnt create K-fuel that burns %80 more efficiently and over %30 cleaner. Not to mention that the Carbon measuring and capture technology is proven to work. People that say clean coal doesnt exist are ignorant, go to evergreen energy's web page and read people. You know what the earth was flat and was the center of the universe at one point in time, and flying was only for birds, and electricity was only lightning.
You really think all these people are going to be convinced by anything on the energy companies own website? Oh yeah that's right, 'cause in your happy go lucky world there must be some sort of organization going around making sure no one lies on the internet.
Your claim of clean coal, and your so-called evidence to back it up are just as much political propaghanda as this video is.
By moving beyond coal, the United States could avoid a legacy of smog-filled skies, acid rain, polluted waterways, contaminated fish, and scarred landscapes. This could each year save some 25,000 lives, reduce respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, avert potential neurological damage for 630,000 babies, and erase a health care bill of over $160 billion.
That is a beautiful dream... what is the price tag on that?
We have natural gas that is the answer. They are looking for sources of revenue for their spending under the cover of saving the world. Tell me how taxing our families is going to stop China and all the rest of the developing countries from burning coal??? It is not... your being BAMBOOZELED!
The con is on. If not, then why not just move towards natural gas and nuclear? Move into the light.
We have to lead by example with regards to China. How can we tell them to stop their actions when only last year they finally surpassed us as the most GHG polluting nation. Clean coal is a joke.
OBAMA: "What I've said is that we would put a cap-and-trade system in place that is more -- that is as aggressive if not more aggressive than anybody else's out there, so if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can, it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted."
OBAMA will bankrupt the coal industry. Say goodbye to your jobs.
Obama sold out by pickin this bigot, Biden, proud of his slave state! Obama should've kept it realz by picking jesse jackson Jr. cuz he has more experience than obama! Obama check yo self! Youve disowned da Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan and Jeremiah wright, but you still defend that KraKKer, William Ayers, SELL OUT! What gaffe is dis bigot, Biden gonna come up wit next. Is he gonna say that he always opposed his granddaddys lynchin of a black family or sumthin!
You're not an uneducated racist are you urBlackPowerSuperior? I bet you are happy your welfare won't be cut off now at least, huh? You really got nerve calling people bigots you racist sack of worthless welfare hate.
In the United States, 23,600 deaths each year can be attributed to air pollution from power plants. Those dying prematurely due to exposure to particulate matter lose, on average, 14 years of life. Burning coal also is responsible for some 554,000 asthma attacks, 16,200 cases of chronic bronchitis, and 38,200 non-fatal heart attacks each year. Atmospheric power plant pollution in the United States racks up an estimated annual health care bill of over $160 billion.
Its cleaner then oil so what more do you want? I would really like to know who performed those studies becuase too many studies have complete bias. This study is mostly bias becuase how exactly can these figure be determined?
If he wants to coal and no nukes how do we produce electricity? Maybe I can get one of those pedal bikes like they use in India and just pedal while I watch t.v.
Ad this to what Obama says about bankrupting the coal industry (came out on youtube today) and you have a recipe for disaster. Want to live in the dark until alternatives come one line? Vote Obama. I enjoy my ability to use this computer, so I will vote McCain.
Does Hairplug Biden know that coal is a four letter? Youtube Joe Biden can't count- the man is retarded. Or You tube Biden Stand and see Biden tell a cripple to stand.

The cost curves for silicon photovoltaic solar panels have already brought the price down 96% from what it was when the technology was first commercialized.
The dynamic is the same as the Moore's Law dynamic which has brought microprocessors down in price and up in processing power... relentlessly and exponentially for 40 years.
This decade, that dynamic will bring the price of solar electricity down below the cost of every other electricity production technology.
BUT -- there really isn't even a fundamental need to turn turbines at all. Go solid state: eliminate the moving parts. Increase reliability. Decrease cost.
Photovoltaic surfaces directly convert photons from the sun (light) to moving electrons (electricity). (His seminal paper on the Photoelectric Effect is what brought Albert Einstein his 1921 Nobel Prize.)
BUT -- in most cases, there is no need even to resort to hot water to turn turbines, because wind and tides can turn turbines very well, thank you very much. (FYI --Wind power is already cheaper than coal, and cheaper than nukes could ever be.... which is why "progressive" Texas has already tripled wind electricity production in the past few years, and the state just budgetted billions to build new transmission lines so West Texas wind energy can be distributed.)
If you want super-hot water to turn turbines, you can use simple solar concentration to make water as hot as you may ever want, and do it at scales both larger and smaller than feasible with coal or nukes.
So, if all you want is hot water with which to turn turbines, there is absolutely no reason to go thru the costly complex dirty dangerous processes required by the fossil or fissile follies.
telephusion: you keep saying super-hot water turns turbines at a coal plant. If you don't understand the fundamental and extremely significant difference between steam and hot-water you do not have anywhere near the technical competency required to comment on the operation or efficiency of this type of machinery. Steam from solar would have the same condensing losses as steam from coal all else being equal. Telephusion, flat out you dont know how much you dont know.
Coal works in an inherently inefficient way -- by creating heat, to boil water, to turn turbines.
If you want heat, there is already an unlimited supply of it --- just pump water through a pipe circuit drilled deep into the earth, because there is vast geothermal potential everywhere as long as you go deep enough.... however, many areas in the US have vast geothermal resource much closer to the surface.
By far the largest domestic energy sources we have in the United States are
1) Solar
2) Wind
3) Geothermal
4) Tidal
Our technologically-harnessable resources in each of these dwarfs our supply of coal.
Electricity generation from each of these can be combined onto our existing grid, but emerging grid technology will be even better. Because these can be decentralized, generation can be closer to use, and far more efficient.
Hydrogen and advanced battery technologies are only 2 of the many emerging electricity storage technologies. These allow timeshifting (stored solar energy to be used at night, for example).
Some say "even if wind and solar can produce more energy than we need, coal and nukes are still required for baseload" --- but that is obsolete thinking.
Take away the institutional bias and subsidies for coal and nukes, and we can definitely get to 100% clean renewable electricity within 10 years.
Transitioning from a world hugely dependent on dirty fuels to one totally based on clean renewables can't happen overnight.
Coal is one of the worst possible fuels. But it is in heavy use, and we have to clean it up while we are also phasing it out.
Biden is completely right.
All new energy R&D and powerplant development in the US can (the technology is now fully ready) -- and should (for reasons be based on economics, security, and environment) be based on renewables.
The US has moved from under 2% renewables to over 7% renewables in just the past few years. Removing government oil & coal subsidies and creating a fair playing field in the US will allow renewables to double in share every few years; in a couple of decades, we could be completely off oil and coal, and phasing out gas and nukes.
Maybe I don't understand but why wouldn't we want to create "clean" coal technology and sell it to the Chinese. If we can offset the trade deficit and reduce worldwide pollution, if only by a little, why wouldn't we want that; even if it doesn't meet the pollution standards in the US. China is bringing the coal plants online with or without the "clean" coal technology.
Did you see his desperate gymnastics on this at the VP debate when Palin referenced this video clip and said that he himself said that he opposed all coal? He said this video took him out of context. He was talking about the U.S. *exporting* clean coal to China. Yes, that's it! That's exactly what he said! This guy has no qualms about lying.
So, why is what he said here about no new coal plants the opposite of what he said on the debate? Could it be that he is a 30 year politician that will lie to you in a heart beat? Yep!
I keep on seeing "wind power" on here. Did you know that in order for wind mills and win power to efficient they have to be in areas with wind currents. The only problem with that is the migration of all types of birds some being endangered species, fly in the wind patterns and currents. The wind power we have right now alone kills over 44,000 birds a year!
Hahahaha I read the comments before the video and I saw liar wich is true and then I saw creep I was like creep. why? Thats the exact feeling I got watching him talk to the yaoung woman. I bet he does sleep around and is def. a creepo! Two faced politician.
What a liar! How could he state in the VP debate that he and Obama want to build clean coal plants in the US, knowing that he is lying through his teeth. What a creep!
But then, in order to get elected Obama/Biden know they have to appear moderates. Once elected they can show their true colors as socialists.
Yes, I totally agree. In the debate he clearly stated that clean coal will be the solution to American energy production as well as China, not just a way to help a foreign country that is going to pollute if we don't help them.
Those genuinely committed to the common good and public interest -- government agencies of integrity, environmentally-responsible business interests, and sane citizens -- can do plenty to accelerate solar adoption (along with a prudent mix of other renewables, including wind and geothermal and tidal), and enable the phase-out of BOTH fossil and fissile approaches.
And sunlight does not have to be mined or refined or transported, and there are no wastes to dispose of or store year after year after year.
And sunlight is free (which is why those with in-vested interests in fossil and fissile raw materials oppose it tooth and nail... because once the solar genie is out of the bottle, their investments will rapid drop to zero value.)
Sunpower -- electricity made from sunlight -- can be cheaper, more abundant, more renewable, and cleaner than either nukes or coal could ever hope to be.
Big vested interests -- corrupt government agencies, greedy corporate lobbies, backwards-looking unions, reactionary citizenry -- can try to hold back the inevitable, but all they can do is slow it down. The solar genie is out of the bottle, and alive and well and growing exponentially in dozens of other countries.
Support of lobbyist that have no interest in changing America is just as bad as picking at someone else's ideas of trying to make things better. No tax raise will ever amount to the $50 billion we already spend monthly on the war in Iraq that Bush so willingly explained as "with us or without us." Check Paul Wolfowitz's "Pax Americana" and what he thought about the direction back in 1997 before making assumptions about the direction in which we were led.
I thought the same thing hen I first watched it but I think he was trying to be sure she could hear him over the crowd. I don't like him as a politician but he'd probably have to get that close to me for me to hear him. Maybe closer. HA!
I can see it now, $10 a gallon gas and over $500 a month for electricity when Obama/Biden take over. Obama will reinstate the ban on off-shore drilling and then the EPA will shut down the coal minds. With NO replacements for our aging nuclear power plants, soon they will start shutting those plants down. However, there still is natural gas. Oh, you have to drill for that like you do for oil. The World has to be laughing at us.
I like the idea of using hydrogen for our transportation, but it is not going to happen without affordable electricity! Our best bet is natural gas. When the warranty on my Prius expires, I am planning to convert it to CNG. Sure we go forward with renewable energy source, but the rest of the world will continue to use cheaper oil and manufacturing jobs will continue to leave the US. Also, 15% of oil is used for plastics and this number is growing.
Some people are converting to CNG with good results and getting millage in the high 30s and low 40s. Currently, I am averaging 47 MPG and it will be at least two years before I do any conversions, such as CNG or Plug-in with the extra batteries. The car is paid for, but still under warranty until then. If the cost increase for NG and for electricity keeps pace with that of gasoline, then I'll just buy a newer Prius.
He was not drunk, it was 10 a.m. and yes, I was there for the speech. He is just passionate and sometimes talks quickly. It could be worse, he could have said he was not familiar with that or "would find some info and bring it back to her."
Biden is a buffoon. Frank Drebin. Had to drop out of the 1988 presidential race because he plagarized from then British labor leader Neil Kinnock. Told a cripple to stand. Insulted Indians and blacks. Said that FDR in 1929 addressed the nation on the tv regarding the depression. FDR was not elected until 1932 and the tv was not unveiled until 1939.
"U.S. installed wind capacity is now at 20,152 MW. The industry hit the 10,000-MW milestone in August 2006, just over two years ago, which means that the industry grew as much over the past two years as it did in the previous two-and-a-half decades."
"AWEA expects more than 7,500 MW of wind power capacity to be installed in 2008, bringing the total U.S. wind capacity to more than 24,000 MW by the end of the year."
vze2: Renewables are not just commercially viable, but commercially installed and operating. Unfortunately, the US is falling behind, due to fossil fuel lobby's hammerlock.
But the world moves on.
"Global carbon credit trade rose to US$60 billion in 2007, from US$33 billion the previous year" (enabling coal-phaseout)
Globally (incl US) "the cleantech industry brought in over $117 billion in new investment last year, up 35% from the $86.5 billion in 2006." (phase-in renewables)
Why does the divided government work? It opens the actions of government to the people since it forces both parties to make their arguments directly to the public in order to forge a consensus. The government can't take potentially destructive actions which lack broad support. As both Congressional Houses will most likely be occupied by Democrats, the electorate must make sure, regardless of your political persuasion, that McCain is in the White House.
vze2: I am writing from knowledge gained over 30+ years. Everything I write is well known to people in the know, and you can easily verify it for yourself using the web.
BUT since YouTube doesn't do URLs well, I'll have to get you to the key references by giving you keywords to google:
Start with:
ucs clean energy
which will get you to the Union of Concerned Scientists site. Please start with "Clean Energy 101" -- and then about the true costs of oil & the many positive alternatives.
telephusion: I dont need to Google anything because as a professional engineer that designs power plant equipment I hear from people like you every day. Grand and politically correct claims that when subjected to impartial due diligence almost always end up as technical and/or commercial lemons. I dont argue someday those technologies will have their place but the claims that they are commercially viable today are wrong. Until that time this country needs coal fired utilities.
I am more than an engineer; I have been a researcher for NASA, helping to do supercomputer simulation development for atmospheric models. I have also been a businessman, had to make payroll, and succeed in the marketplace. One of the companies I founded provided digital technologies for managing geospatial data relevant to environment and infrastructure projects. I'm a leader in how to apply free market solutions to environmental challenges, with special focus on using intelligent technology.

telephusion you are making a lot of claims. Are you an engineer or just repeating things you have read on the Internet because it says what you want to hear? Can you back any of what you say up with concrete proof? If so please provide your source.

Clean coal shouldn't be the answer, but assuming that the US is going to be able to tell China how to produce their energy seems a little outrageous..
I did do my research. Of course Obama's website says X,Y,Z. I don't care what they say on the website. Biden said no to clean coal twice in this clip. Its coming from his mouth. What's on the website is from the campaign, not Obama or Biden himself.
2) McCain wants to cancel the Obama debate Friday.
CONCLUSION:
We're NOT stupid McCain...You're afraid of debating Obama and Palin is afraid of giving interviews because she is not knowledgeable of vital issues. Nor are her responses intelligent.
The five retards attacking every Biden video on YouTube are the same five who are going to vote McCain even if he promises to blow up the country if elected. Blah blah blah blah blah.
Without clean coal, and no nuclear power under Obama's administration, and no real offshore drilling, the only thing Obama wants is foreign oil. Doesn't that just make those Arab nations more and more wealthy? How is that change?
It's not Change You Can Believe In. Its Lies I Want You To Believe In
I guess you don't do any research. Go to Obama's official website so you can read his stances. He wants to get America off dependence on foriegn oil and develop new clean energy future.
I did do my research. Of course Obama's website says X,Y,Z. I don't care what they say on the website. Biden said no to clean coal twice in this clip. Its coming from his mouth. What's on the website is from the campaign, not Obama or Biden himself.
Then just say what you mean. You don't trust Obama or Biden because they aren't Republican or whatever you are. I would argue about this with you but I'm sure you wouldn't listen.
Obama/Biden aren't against clean coal, their against dirty coal. Don't act like you don't know what he ment? But maybe your just not too sharp in hearing, or maybe your just soft in the head.
I'm well aware of that. I always read vid descriptions before I watch. I understand that's a rarity though. The bottom line is that Joe Biden has made a career out of outright lying and saying stupid things which is why he has never been a viable candidate for the presidency and it was a huge mistake for Barack Obama to pick him as a runningmate. He brings nothing to the table whatsoever and does more harm than good.
What a blow-hard. Anyone who watched Obamas acceptance speech at the Democratic convention heard him mention clean coal and nuclear power first as solutions to global warming. Wind and solar made it in as afterthoughts. Joe Biden is a liar.
When Barack Obama loses in November, he has this imbicile to thank. The only travisty worse than the Democrats throwing their guaranteed victory with Hillary Clinton away is Barack Obama's choice of this blithering idiot as his runningmate. He had a golden opportunity with Gov. Tim Kaine to do some serious damage in the south and blew it. Now, it's almost as if Obama is either trying to lose on purpose or Biden is sabotaging him for Bill and Hill.
Thank you for asking "If it was profitable the market would have already done it" Actually it's worse than a myth, it doesn't even have any meaning as a statement. Why? Because there is no such thing as "the" market. There is only "the current" market which depends on one thousand and one variables including the current laws. The current laws subsidize coal and oil and short-term thinking. Other laws could help renewables+longterm biz decisions. Neither is "the" market, but one is saner policy
We need to 1.more away from coal for the sake of lungs, climate, and hubbart's peak We need 2.job training. It's silly to ask for proof, it's impossible to prove what Obama will do. The fact is, we need to push him or McCain whoever is prez, to do both.Obama's stated policies are not perfect, but see both websites;obama is saner. The fact that we can't mathematically prove 2 is doable does not lessen the need to do 1 AND 2.
Do you even undstand what you mean by "the" market? separate post.
You can't get off that easy. It was your words that PA will get clean jobs and that was a fact. Now you admit you have no proof to back up your arguments. If you cannot provide proof it is not a fact it is an assumption or in your case a hope or a feeling. That is why people like you are the truly dangerous. You use vague and indefinable words like hope and change yet offer nothing of substance to justify how to make it happen. Crossing your fingers and hoping is not a plan nor is it leadership.
What are contrails or chem-trails? What are they for? There not just exhaust from military plans flying over head. If they were, why are they taking longer and longer to dissipate through the years?
Is it to control global warming or to control the weather? What are they made of and are there any side effects?
Aircraft contrails are simply frozen water vapor. The vapor is a product of combustion from the engines and freezes at the extreme cold temperatures of that altitude. It is the same thing as being able to see your breath on a cold day. They are nothing nefarious.
i was told that by some people that as well vze2 but, some of my family with deep military background. A couple Friends as well of mine that are much older then i with military backgrounds.
i was told there are two reasons: 1 There are for testing for incoming missiles responses because, It's cheaper then using dummy missiles. 2 It's chemicals for a number of reasons.
i seen pitchers inside of the aircraft and the containers and they take longer now-a-days to dissipate or does ice melt slower?
Aw, this is misleading - it seems like Joe Biden is saying this NOW during the campaign ... but it took place 2 yrs ago! Great footage but he may have just changed his position since then as he learned more about the whole process. sigh, here I thought this was yet another example of Biden b!tch-sl@pping Obama ... they were still working at odds to each other at this point.

Anyone who has been to LA knows that is the most absurd statement ever posted on youtube. lol. The majority of particulates in the air in LA come from cars, ships in LA and Long Beach ports, and dust.
PA will get _clean_ jobs without ruining their lungs, or the planet, through renewable energy and other better paying, more pleasant jobs (unlike the Republicans, Obama can actually help with job training so as fewer people, over time, work in coal, they can find work in cleaner energy) but that's just logic and facts and common sense, so hard-core right-wingers won't want to hear it..
Ok econdemocracy, if it is logic and fact then prove it. Is Obama going to offer every coal miner that loses a job a pleasant same-paying job in a windmill factory? Job training only works if there is a new job to go to. Where are these new renewable jobs coming from? Where are the factories planned to be built and who is paying for these factories? Where's your proof? If it was profitable the market would have already done it. Typical liberal argument; all emotion with no factual support.
Obama -- Do NOT get rid of Biden! We need him by your side and out there doing EXACTLY what he does so well. By the way, I was watching reruns of 1929 TV last night, and it was amazing. But where was Roosevelt? I just saw Hoover. (Go Cubbies)
I wonder what Joe Biden's coal mining ancestors (the ones who would come up from working in the mines for twelve hours and play football for four hours) would think about all of this? They must be rolling in their graves.
Oh wait, nevermind, those were actually Neil Kinnock's ancestors....
One of these days he's going to do that to some gal with a redneck boyfriend who doesn't appreciate her being touched. Then we will have the most watched YouTube video of all time.
I keep getting the feeling that Biden has been bribed by the Republicans into making Obama lose. He's criticizing Obama every day and he's telling people on wheelchair to stand up and now this. Jesus. You know what? China is building nuclear station
clean coal is clean enough , high gas prices & high cigarette prices along with banning clean coal only means slow economic recovery for the U.S. any more poisonous nuclear power plants, radioactive mines & radioactive dump sites

Ultimately, the only reason to burn coal is to heat water, to make steam, to turn turbines, to generate electricity.
There are much better ways to heat water, and make steam, and turn turbines, and generate electricity.
For example, geothermal and solar thermal are far more efficient ways to super-heat water and create large amounts of steam.
Wind is a much more efficient way to turn turbines.
Solar photovoltaics are a much more efficient way to generate electricity (no steam or turbines).

This decade, that dynamic will bring the price of solar electricity down below the cost of every other electricity production technology.
telephusion 3 years ago 2
BUT -- there really isn't even a fundamental need to turn turbines at all. Go solid state: eliminate the moving parts. Increase reliability. Decrease cost.
Photovoltaic surfaces directly convert photons from the sun (light) to moving electrons (electricity). (His seminal paper on the Photoelectric Effect is what brought Albert Einstein his 1921 Nobel Prize.)
telephusion 3 years ago

So, if all you want is hot water with which to turn turbines, there is absolutely no reason to go thru the costly complex dirty dangerous processes required by the fossil or fissile follies.
telephusion 3 years ago
telephusion: you keep saying super-hot water turns turbines at a coal plant. If you don't understand the fundamental and extremely significant difference between steam and hot-water you do not have anywhere near the technical competency required to comment on the operation or efficiency of this type of machinery. Steam from solar would have the same condensing losses as steam from coal all else being equal. Telephusion, flat out you dont know how much you dont know.
vze2 3 years ago
Coal works in an inherently inefficient way -- by creating heat, to boil water, to turn turbines.
If you want heat, there is already an unlimited supply of it --- just pump water through a pipe circuit drilled deep into the earth, because there is vast geothermal potential everywhere as long as you go deep enough.... however, many areas in the US have vast geothermal resource much closer to the surface.
telephusion 3 years ago
By far the largest domestic energy sources we have in the United States are
1) Solar
2) Wind
3) Geothermal
4) Tidal
Our technologically-harnessable resources in each of these dwarfs our supply of coal.
Electricity generation from each of these can be combined onto our existing grid, but emerging grid technology will be even better. Because these can be decentralized, generation can be closer to use, and far more efficient.
telephusion 3 years ago
Hydrogen and advanced battery technologies are only 2 of the many emerging electricity storage technologies. These allow timeshifting (stored solar energy to be used at night, for example).
Some say "even if wind and solar can produce more energy than we need, coal and nukes are still required for baseload" --- but that is obsolete thinking.
Take away the institutional bias and subsidies for coal and nukes, and we can definitely get to 100% clean renewable electricity within 10 years.
telephusion 3 years ago
Transitioning from a world hugely dependent on dirty fuels to one totally based on clean renewables can't happen overnight.
Coal is one of the worst possible fuels. But it is in heavy use, and we have to clean it up while we are also phasing it out.
Biden is completely right.
All new energy R&D and powerplant development in the US can (the technology is now fully ready) -- and should (for reasons be based on economics, security, and environment) be based on renewables.
telephusion 3 years ago
The US has moved from under 2% renewables to over 7% renewables in just the past few years. Removing government oil & coal subsidies and creating a fair playing field in the US will allow renewables to double in share every few years; in a couple of decades, we could be completely off oil and coal, and phasing out gas and nukes.
telephusion 3 years ago
I'd check the debate footage to get a better understanding of what he meant here. And how many megawatts do you have to produce to be "flourishing"?
brycedub 3 years ago
Maybe I don't understand but why wouldn't we want to create "clean" coal technology and sell it to the Chinese. If we can offset the trade deficit and reduce worldwide pollution, if only by a little, why wouldn't we want that; even if it doesn't meet the pollution standards in the US. China is bringing the coal plants online with or without the "clean" coal technology.

And sunlight is abundant and renewable.
And sunlight is clean.
telephusion 3 years ago
Sunpower -- electricity made from sunlight -- can be cheaper, more abundant, more renewable, and cleaner than either nukes or coal could ever hope to be.
Big vested interests -- corrupt government agencies, greedy corporate lobbies, backwards-looking unions, reactionary citizenry -- can try to hold back the inevitable, but all they can do is slow it down. The solar genie is out of the bottle, and alive and well and growing exponentially in dozens of other countries.

Oh, you have to drill for that like you do for oil. kakoishii,
I like the idea of using hydrogen for our transportation, but it is not going to happen without affordable electricity!

"By 2020, it's expected that 180 gigawatts (GW) of electricity will be supplied by the wind-enough for about 107 million European households."
"Through 2020, wind is expected to account for 34% of new generating capacity; 46% from 2020-2030."

"U.S. installed wind capacity is now at 20,152 MW.

And sunlight is free (which is why those with in-vested interests in fossil and fissile raw materials oppose it tooth and nail... because once the solar genie is out of the bottle, their investments will rapid drop to zero value.)
The solar genie is out of the bottle, and alive and well and growing exponentially in dozens of other countries.
telephusion 3 years ago
OTOH, those genuinely committed to the common good and public interest -- government agencies of integrity, environmentally-responsible business interests, and sane citizens -- can do plenty to accelerate solar adoption (along with a prudent mix of other renewables, including wind and geothermal and tidal), and enable the phase-out of BOTH fossil and fissile approaches.

Here are some other pieces of information:
Biden voted for the Iraq war.
Biden voted against FISA.
Biden was against clean coal in the primaries.
Biden supported the surge.

Then just say what you mean. You don't trust Obama or Biden because they aren't Republican or whatever you are. I would argue about this with you but I'm sure you wouldn't listen.

This was taken at an Obama-Biden rally in Maumee, OH just LAST WEEK, on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, not in 2006! U Liar!
And thank you for confirming that Obama and Biden don't want coal in America. Without clean coal:
+ tens of thousands of jobs would be lost, especially in PA, OH, CO, MT, WY, VA and WV;
+ there is no hope for energy independence;
+ we lose world leadership in developing and exporting new clean coal technologies;
+ and we lose the source of 50% of our electricity.

Obama/Biden aren't against clean coal, their against dirty coal. Don't act like you don't know what he ment? But maybe your just not too sharp in hearing, or maybe your just soft in the head.
TheKidJV 3 years ago
I'm well aware of that. I always read vid descriptions before I watch. I understand that's a rarity though. The bottom line is that Joe Biden has made a career out of outright lying and saying stupid things which is why he has never been a viable candidate for the presidency and it was a huge mistake for Barack Obama to pick him as a runningmate. He brings nothing to the table whatsoever and does more harm than good.
thunderstruck665 3 years ago

Now, it's almost as if Obama is either trying to lose on purpose or Biden is sabotaging him for Bill and Hill.
thunderstruck665 3 years ago
Thank you for asking "If it was profitable the market would have already done it" Actually it's worse than a myth, it doesn't even have any meaning as a statement. Why? Because there is no such thing as "the" market. There is only "the current" market which depends on one thousand and one variables including the current laws. The current laws subsidize coal and oil and short-term thinking. Other laws could help renewables+longterm biz decisions. Neither is "the" market, but one is saner policy
econdemocracy 3 years ago
We need to 1.more away from coal for the sake of lungs, climate, and hubbart's peak We need 2.job training. It's silly to ask for proof, it's impossible to prove what Obama will do. The fact is, we need to push him or McCain whoever is prez, to do both.Obama's stated policies are not perfect, but see both websites;obama is saner. The fact that we can't mathematically prove 2 is doable does not lessen the need to do 1 AND 2.
Do you even undstand what you mean by "the" market? separate post.
econdemocracy 3 years ago

What are they made of and are there any side effects?
xesiria 3 years ago

Great footage but he may have just changed his position since then as he learned more about the whole process. sigh, here I thought this was yet another example of Biden b!tch-sl@pping Obama ... they were still working at odds to each other at this point.

By far the largest domestic energy sources we have in the United States are
1) Solar
2) Wind
3) Geothermal
4) Tidal
Our technologically-harnessable resources in each of these dwarfs our supply of coal.
Electricity generation from each of these can be combined onto our existing grid, but emerging grid technology will be even better. Because these can be decentralized, generation can be closer to use, and far more efficient.

PA will get _clean_ jobs without ruining their lungs, or the planet, through renewable energy and other better paying, more pleasant jobs (unlike the Republicans, Obama can actually help with job training so as fewer people, over time, work in coal, they can find work in cleaner energy) but that's just logic and facts and common sense, so hard-core right-wingers won't want to hear it..
econdemocracy 3 years ago 2
Ok econdemocracy, if it is logic and fact then prove it. Is Obama going to offer every coal miner that loses a job a pleasant same-paying job in a windmill factory? Job training only works if there is a new job to go to. Where are these new renewable jobs coming from? Where are the factories planned to be built and who is paying for these factories? Where's your proof? If it was profitable the market would have already done it. Typical liberal argument; all emotion with no factual support.
