It's showing what real life is like in the slums of India, and due to the exposure of what life is like, ignorant people who didn't care to help now are. Not only that, but yes it does happen in other countries. Maimed children and dirty slum life can be seen every day in Brazil, and even in Colombia, MY country, and how I wish someone would make a film in order to help people realize that the world isn't a perfect place.
Slumdog millionaire is not the first film to do these "horrible" things as you choose to put it. Watch "Kingdom of God", it's the Brazilian version of Slumdog Millionaire, about life in the flavelas (brazilian form of shanti-towns, all slums).
How would Danny Boyle create such a touching, wonderful, emotional film if he only showed the "pretty parts of India" like you want him to do and not "denegrate" (check you spelling) it's people. So what's the plot like then, if he had made you happy?
...between the rich people living in the beautiful areas in the cities of India and the poorer people living in the slums 5 minutes away, because we wouldn't want to degrade a country by showing REALITY. So Jamal is twice as rich now, hooray! What a plot, and of course he gets the girl. Won't the audience just connect to that and be overwhelmed with emotion at the end of that? And don't forget, there will be no interrogation or torture questioning his winning because he's a rich boy...
...(oh, and I'm not in any way insinuating that law enforcement is corrupt or anything and ruin the pretty little picture you've want people to paint of India and half of the world and that they would interrogate him because he is poor, and not bother because he's rich).
So there you go. Rich boy without a care in the world wins the 200 million rupees, making him only richer, and gets the pretty girl.
Wow, that will just raise awareness and touch audiences hearts. Worthy of 12 Oscars!!!

maybe that isn't the point of the movie-- maybe the director is trying to show that people who live in shitty places or in places people think is aren't actually shitty people. Jamal encourages lots of little kids from poor places that they have HOPE. This movie is about hope. Latika gave up, but with Jamal's hope a happy ending was produced. Its showing that not all poor people are greedy u know? There was a happy ending, its about LOVE. gosh. Its not like they showed ALL of india!

A happy well-off boy living in a beautiful up kept home in middle/upper class india, with his happy mother, father, and brother, who are all still alive (because they're hindu, obviously, right? we wouldn't want there to be minorities in our pretty little film), and don't forget to mention that his older brother is always looking out for him and sheltering him from the outside world. So our happy rich Jamal falls in love with the pretty and equally well-off girl next door, Latika.

Because they are well off, it really isn't much of a challenge for them to be together, the only possible problem would be either that she' poor or not Hindu, but this film is too precious for that so of course she's a rich Hindu girl. Oh, did we just loose all the plot? So I guess he goes onto Who Wants to be a Millionaire for fun, and he wins all 200 million rupees. One large fortune to add to his already large fortune, but we'll leave out the fact that it only widens the poverty gap...

you can't sugarcoat the world, and that's the point of the film. It's showing what real life is like in the slums of India, and due to the exposure of what life is like, ignorant people who didn't care to help now are. Not only that, but yes it does happen in other countries. Maimed children and dirty slum life can be seen every day in Brazil, and even in Colombia, MY country, and how I wish someone would make a film in order to help people realize that the world isn't a perfect place.

Slumdog millionaire is not the first film to do these "horrible" things as you choose to put it. Watch "Kingdom of God", it's the Brazilian version of Slumdog Millionaire, about life in the flavelas (brazilian form of shanti-towns, all slums).
How would Danny Boyle create such a touching, wonderful, emotional film if he only showed the "pretty parts of India" like you want him to do and not "denegrate" (check you spelling) it's people. So what's the plot like then, if he had made you happy?

...between the rich people living in the beautiful areas in the cities of India and the poorer people living in the slums 5 minutes away, because we wouldn't want to degrade a country by showing REALITY. So Jamal is twice as rich now, hooray! What a plot, and of course he gets the girl. Won't the audience just connect to that and be overwhelmed with emotion at the end of that? And don't forget, there will be no interrogation or torture questioning his winning because he's a rich boy...

So there you go. Rich boy without a care in the world wins the 200 million rupees, making him only richer, and gets the pretty girl.
Wow, that will just raise awareness and touch audiences hearts. Worthy of 12 Oscars!!!

Shut up ZClipze. Indians exploit themselves. The government doesn't help the poor in India. The Indians not in slums do the same and tread on these people, especially the women, determined to keep the poor as they are. At least the issue has been highlighted. It's just a shame that an Inian couldn't do it as they are too busy seeing India through rose tinted spectacles, making ridiculous Bollywood films that don't reflect real life in the slightest. ravsibabsi, that was very well said. Just take a look at these fuckin Bollywood movies that they are churning out nowadays, all style and no substance. Danny Boyle is not the best director in the world by far, but he is smart and educated enough to make a film about the slums in India, a task that is by no means easy to do; especially without entering the 'controversial' territory.

It is sad but truth is poverty is everywhere, we all should know it! Some have no choice others for some reason choose to live in poverty! First time I went on holiday in Europe I was surprised with ppl begging on street I am sure if they look for job they will find it but who knows why they chose to live that way!
