Sometimes I do, but not always. A lot of my characters don't need armatures, but the Become guy, ogre alan, and a few other characters did, but usually I try to design them so they can be supported with just clay.

Usually there's always something holding it up, like thin string (fishing line or thread) or something off screen, so it looks like the object is in the air, but really it's being help up off screen.

Many people also just edit out the frames where you see what's holding up the flying object.
