  • So I guess the air flight entrepreneurs thought that air flight wasn't dangerous with unknown risks and unknown costs?

Sure the government funded Apollo.. but the only reason that was possible was because America was a wealthy nation back then.. and we surely paid for that expediter in the 70's with inflation of the dollar.

There is a monetary incentive for the private sector to go to space.. and that is with space tourism. There are many private enterprising doing this right now.

  • 5:28 Oh Dr. Tyson that is a rocket.

  • How come there is a less than a second long clip of Seinfeld in between two Newt Gingrich clips at 2:08 ? Strange...

  • In no way do I mean to defend Gingrich (Ron Paul 2012!) But Tyson's logic is faulty too, Columbus, Lewis & Clark were using government money to explore or discover land that was already inhabited by people who came out of their own self interest. As for the moon, it's great that humans have walked upon it, but we'll never know how all those resources would have been spent if the money had been left with the taxpayers. If we want to explore space we can do so by contributing voluntarily.

  • @icopaseticMHF you have presented a counter factual and didn't flesh out the argument for it.

  • @TheCycadsAreAudible that the western world was already discovered by other people or that government force misallocates resources far more than the people who have to create them? ...Or that individuals or groups will continue to explore space even if government isn't involved?.... Or that Native Americans came to North America with out some sort of government planning. Maybe there was, I've just always assumed they came in small groups, without the application of force.

  • I get what Tyson is saying. In other words, the moon base is unrealistic not because of the technology, but because the country lacks any vision anymore.

Sad. We once went to the moon, now look at us.

  • 2:07 ~ 2:08

    Um, Seinfeld? WTF?

  • @Riposte8

haha! wow wtf! good find :)

  • Albuquerque? its a city not a state you fucking moron

  • NDT = hero.

  • newt is a genius

  • NASA has been drawing maps of the Moon for 40 freakin' years Neil. Jesus.

  • The title of this video is wrong. He never said it was unrealistic, he said how it can be done and agreed with Newt on many thing. Money shouldn't be a problem, the bailout cost more money than the 54 year budget of NASA. So instead of putting money to things we should let fail, we could have a better space program and maybe even a moon base by 2020.

  • Uhh... Seinfeld at 2:08 ?

  • @axblake1

lol! thats so weird... was the crew watching seinfeld?

  • Good Gods, how long have you Americans been letting Martin Bashir on TV? I thought it was bad enough that you gave Piers Morgan somewhere to go...

  • I see this being another "Bashing Bashir" segment on Stephen Kruiser in the near future.

  • if republicans think the private sector can do a better job than nasa, i challenge the koch brothers to conquer space and keep whatever profits they can make but with zero involvement of tax dollars

  • Dr. Tyson is the absolute greatest fucking dude ever.

  • Hosts need to realize when their guests are ten thousand times smarter than themselves.

  • This is actually genius. You just can't have a great economy, you have to have a mission and that mission alone creates a great economy.

  • @Kandimann yeah like state would need to put atleast a trilion to have a small colony (I think thats still far too cheap), so new gingrich would be new keynes of our time lol

  • @Lius525 I was referring to deGrasse's comment about whether Nasa is necessary. But as for the colony, thats a perfect example of the ideas of a retard. But obviously he said it for votes but the people he was talking too were rocket scientists, they saw right through it. So just saying it in front of them proves Gingrich is a retard and it had the opposite effect of getting their vote. These ppl are smart enough to put someone on the moon but it would be dumb to try it at the moment.

  • @Kandimann That's kinduv whats sad about NASA. If we had the resources we could put people on the moon, on mars, in space and no one knows what technology we would develop while attempting such manuevers. We really need to take care of world issues to progress as a species.

  • @Kandimann Yeah I misread it, I was reffereing how conservatives hate goverment investments yet this would be biggest goverment spending in history of this planet ( seriously, even if whole world participated, I am not sure we would be able to have 5000 THOUSAND people on moon) and they somehow can't see the irony.

  • why do we even need someone to tell us, this is unrealistic, to be fair this is the least of the things that worries me about newt gingrich

  • @chrisgangsta

lol Gingrich is such a clown.

  • Great to hear Neil give an unbiased opinion in the face of a host who giggled after every question.

  • @MrDanielh3417 Agreed! Could that host be any more arrogant and biased? Neil gave it back to him but in a very controlled and polite way.
