It's funny how it's a strange sexism regarding woman, then again this is during the 90s in japan, but still. I mean when there is a male combatant do they ever ask their wives about their impressions inbetween every damn tasting? Meh.

I think the fortune-teller scored Kobayashi lowly out of envy. Kobayashi is beautiful and talented and Hosoki was looking for a reason to cut down the challenger. She's such a bitter old hag. Honestly, I think the young actress critic, I forget her name, is the best and most informative judge. Her comments seem the most intricate and well-spoken to me.

He grooms himself well - hate to speculate too much on things like this, since Sakai is such a damn good chef himself.

Ms. Hosoki buried Kobayashi. She also insulted Sakai's main course which looked very tasty and gave both the lowest scorings. The 3 men actually scored it much more even and fair actually, kudos to them.

I think it would have been better a tie IMO.

i've noticed with Iron Chef episodes that they sometimes edit the tasting segment by including more negative comments for the Iron Chef in order to make it seem like he's going to lose, and then surprise the audience with the results. such editing is not uncommon on TV in general. we weren't there and didn't taste the dishes ourselves, how can anyone say that she deserves to win based on just the comments of the judges, and ONLY the comments that made it on the programme at that?

Kobayashi played to the strength of her main ingredient (rich fat) and stuck with traditional French cuisine....

Sakai tried to appeal to the Japanese palate, as he often does...

Given the very diverse (sarcasm) and credentialed (more sarcasm) selection of judges here, I think it is no coincidence that Iron Chef Sakai won.

Maybe he won some extra points for originality or something.

It's odd, but I've noticed that just because she praises the challenger and nips at the Iron Chef, doesn't mean that she won't give more points to the Iron Chef himself. (Asako Hitler is the same way.) I wish I knew exactly what they judge on the scorecards, but I'm willing to bet there's a spot for "how well they put up with judges' remarks."

Absolutely! Sakai's dishes were looked good but even among the judges they thought his dishes were inconsistent. Big mistake by Kobayashi for forgetting to put the foie gras in her stew dish to Hosoki . . . Then again:Hosoki is a fortune teller - She should've seen it coming!!! Still, Kobayashi got robbed. This was her victory, no doubt about it!

It looks like she got robbed to me too. The only way she didn't is if the tasting segment was edited poorly, either originally or for the dub, leaving out more negative comments for the challenger and more positive for Sakai.

Plus, I can always do without Hosoki. How she can walk into Kitchen Stadium every time and give these amazing dishes 15s and 17s out of 20 is beyond me. I feel like she would be happier being served a pie with a filling of yen and the crushed dreams of some blind orphans.

Thank you, archo, so much! The judges were hard on Sakai, which is unusual, but they still gave him the win. I don't understand that. Hosoki baffles me. I don't even see why she's a judge. Not one judge there was a foodie or true food critic. Oh, well. It was a great battle with a fabulous ingredient we'll never taste in our lifetimes!
