Joe Carroll was a entertainer and singer. In 1946 he joined the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band as his vocalist. Joe then would join Dizzy in the 50's to the late 60's. In the early 70's Joe made his only solo CD a man with the happy sound. Joe is mentioned in a Be-bop carol and Dizzy's Poor Joe. He died in 1983 of a heart attack
hmm must be an old soundie, it is shown backwards..(you can tell by the dancers appearing to lead with the wrong hand/ starting on the wrong foot) Love the song!
"Whoah, possibly the invention of the high-five was one of the jive/blues culture?" Oh yeah, give-me-some-skin (or whatever) was considered mostly a "black" thing right from the '30s to the '70s.
A young Perry Como took a stab at hepster jive (a la Cab Calloway, Joe Carroll, etc.) in the song "Dig You Later," including slipping the other singer some skin, etc. It's on youtube.
This is from 1943; personnel should be identical or similar to their scene in Stormy Weather: Carroll and Pinky Johnson up front, Nick Aldrich piano, Johnny Cousin guitar, Ebenezer Paul bass, Willie Jones drums, Alvis Cowans washboard. Female dancer Nicky O'Daniel played Caldonia in Louis Jordan's film Caldonia a couple years later.
very good

Joe Carroll is cool as hell on this. By far the best version of this I have heard.

Hello, where did you locate this soundie, if you don't mind me asking? I'm currently doing research on Nikki O'Daniel, a popular dancer in that day.
