Great layout. I like the divider you used in the middle to create some diversity within your layout if that's what your intention is. I'm in the process of setting up a 4x8 for my son but this is an inspiration. Are you using DCC or DC power? Thanks and good luck!
@TheSteamChannel - The grade is not as steep as it may appear. The single track is about 2.5% while the double main is about 1% in the opposite direction. But to answer your question I have no derailment issues as of now. Thanks for the comments, I have been doing some scenery lately and will have an update soon.
How are you keeping your foam layers together? Some of the seams look pretty tight. I've used latex paint as a glue, works pretty well while shaping across the seams to become at least partially invisible, But it takes a long time to dry completely because of no air...wood glue also is this way.
@MrRLN2010 - I used Foam Tack Glue made by Woodland Scenics. It's about $12 for 12oz. so it's a bit pricey but works well. I would think that there is a cheaper alternative out there but I do not know of it. If you have watched my second layout update the lines from the layers of foam dissapear with a light coating of Sculptamold.
@cbnut81 - Me too. I grew up in Chicago and then Cary. Took the RTA/Metra many many times to see my Grandma. My Dad worked for the CNW out of the Proviso yard in Melrose Park.
Good looking layout & track plan. Really like the start of your landscaping as well. Will you be adding a yard on the upper deck anywhere? Started my first real layout thats about 60/40 shelf/frame around a 22x12' dual purpose room. Will be about 200' & 30 turnouts in total. Have about 90% of it down & 75% wired. I dont have any stagging though which is kind of buggin me. Anyhow, enjoyed your vid, keep up the good work! Hope to see more as you progress ;)
@rmindydotcom - Thanks for the comments. I will not be adiing a yard. I wish I had the room but it will not work out. I need to get working on my layout. I haven't had any time lately (work work work). Hopefully I will have time soon.
@biggeneU2002 Thanks for the comments! The engines are SD70ACe MTH's. The layout has hit a snag, I have to re-do some turnouts that are not operating properly. I also haven't had any time to work on it lately with work being so busy. I should be getting to work on the layout pretty soon. Stay tuned!
@YTisawsum - The grade actually looks steeper than it is because the main level is also rising at the same place. It is steeper than I would have liked but it will be hidden by a highway bridge. I believe it's about 2.5 - 3.0.
This is a great layout. its simple but it is built very well! Deffinatly MR material once its done! That first corner is really cool shot as well!

@TheSPModeler Thank you for the flattering comment. I only hope it's MR material some day.

Looks like this is going to be a beautiful layout when it's done, nice work! Do you have any derailment issues while going down that steep grade?

It's good that you have some staging on the lower level. That will come in handy later. What's your steepest grade?
TrainDr101 1 year ago
@TrainDr101 The steepest grade is about 2.5. Yes the lower staging is great, I park the trains down there to avoid a little dust too, lol.
