I use to think this laptop was funny as hell. But I have actually been drawn to using two monitors. If you have to read something while creating another document (very common unless your completely original). Two monitors is amazing. It feels better than just snapping two documents on the same screen too. However this side monitor seems a bit small for that purpose in my opinion.
All the Apple fanboys crying about how "ugly" it is should stick to their pretty little overpriced Macbooks and get back on Facebook and play Farmville. Leave the real machines and real work for real men.
@artifactingreality ...yea well if u dnt need all of those features then you can buy a different version of a thinkpad that suits your needs...and it doesnt mean your cheap it jst means you DO NOT NEED ALL OF THOSE FEATURES...lol
i fuckin love IBM thinkpads i wont use anything else every single ibm ive ever had still works perfectly even my 16 year old 380 works perfectly 6 main points why i love IBMS there built to last 25 years against 12 months for all the others they only use intel processors , non of that AMD junk every part is user serviceble is hdd , memory case is aluminum instead of cheap plastic they never break ive never found a discarded thinkpad at the recyclers or boot sale that doesnt work
AMD have consistantly had higher speed processors , but intel have consistently made processors that dont crash and become consistantly unstable or concistantly blow up
smart arse
an intell system will run stable 99% of the time under load
Do you have a source for that? I've owned Both AMD and INTEL systems, and i've never had a CPU die on me or become unstable. Maybe if you were smarter than a fish, you'd know you're actually supposed to fit the heatsink that comes in the box. Oh, and thermal paste is not food.
@b191191 amd doestnt come near intel since intels core i7 series, hell phenom ii x4 wont even reach i5, they even edmit they give up on the i7 vs phenom.
this computer is a knock off of the GSCREEN, look it up 10 times better, better graphics and memory.. GSCREEN. its better nicer faster. and american made
"We worked with our partners at Microsoft to really understand the digital photography community" since when did Microsoft understand the digital photography community?
@ArmandoXIII the problem is that today there are existing only a few real men out there, so its not a surprise that ibms revenue shrinks with this kind of notebooks...
My post didn't make much sense. I have a T43p and two R50p notebooks with 15.0" screens that have a resolution of 2048x1536. I also have a T210 monitor that is the same resolution that I can hook up externally off the VGA port on the notebooks. But I want to also run T221 monitors which I can do through a Asus XG Station yet will need more processing power so I considered this W700ds. Instead I'm going to put my notebook displays into a 15.0 T60p with a 14.1" T61 mobo in the T60p frame. Better?
I considered the W700ds as an upgrade from my QXGA 15.0" IBM 2048x1536 resolution computer which has a VGA out port that will push another QXGA resolution out of my T210 monitor. I have IBM T221 monitors, but I've decided to just put the QXGA screen in a modified 15" T60p and use a Asus XG Station to run the both the T210 and T221-DG5s. This 17" is just too big. If they had done this with a 15.4" design factor then I'd buy one, this isn't very portable. I like the 400 nit for sunlight viewing.
The secondary screen appears to be adjustable (to some degree) in this video, but most user videos document that the screen is fixed and has only 1 viewing angle. Lenovo needs to vastly improve on being more consistent, honest and transparent to its customers.
I am a thinkpad fan, but as of late... I've been losing faith in the brand.
This could be a pre-product model that goes to the dealer as a demo. And then they make a last minute decision to remove the hinge. Cause for my point of view, the second screen is totally fragile. It will snap easily. So, to make it more rigid and reliable, they remove the hinge. But they still very easy to break IMO. But I never interesting in a laptop this big and with such a short cruse range.
Perhaps you should tell that it comes with a garbage TN monitor that is useless for any real photowork. The 2nd display is even totally disgusting, since is has the very bad TN vertical viewing angle horizontally. You can even see it in the video!!!
So take your great dual-HDD / dual-screen / wacom notebook and don't act like it's for photographers or come back with a new revision with IPS / AFFS screens. Then we'll talk again. But TN for photographeres is ****
I think the short coming of W series is the cruise range. The screen part is a easy problem. They can add an option of what ever screen you want. Cause I don't think running a CAD will require any kind of fancy screen. So, how do you like your T61? I have no experience of using IBM descendent line. I heard they are good (on reliability), though.
I like it. Not used to less quality though ;). But the screen sucks (I have a 7664-16U) (1440x900). Both the viewing angles (0 degrees) and the low resolution and wrong aspect ratio.
My W700 is the strongest notebook I ever seen. I just don't see the point of adding another horrible screen to what already is a low quality main screen. Do not believe the 400 nit screen will make a difference with whatever screen other notebooks already have. The viewing angle is bad!!
What I recommend Lenovo is to improve the main screen by adding a LED backlit with at least 100% Gamut screen to the W700 before even mislead customers and targeting such machine to pro photographers...
The panel is crap. You can get a $1000 backlight behind a $50 panel and it's still bad. They should use AFFS / IPS with LED backlight, not the crappy TN panels.
Lenovo? heck no, I work for a company of more than a 1000, and we use Lenovo (previously IBM) and they're the worst quality, on first 6 months, the HD, keyboard, go out like crazy. Many manufacturers are so concerned with new features that they have not got the base features working... make a laptop that works well and has longer lifetime than 6 months before things start to go bad... If anything learn something from the Big 3's mistake and toyota....
One more thing...your video shows the monitor can adjust angles...there are other videos showing it cant. Might want to pass the word onto them - or you will have people loose interest after they see that vid. (It means a lot to adjust the angle.
Forget about doing serious work with the cheap and horrible pen that comes with the W700... and by the way, as of today 09/01/04 the integrated Wacom only supports just one button!
I use to think this laptop was funny as hell. But I have actually been drawn to using two monitors. I had many AMD CPUs and there was not one crash because of the CPU,
even when I undervolted them. Crashes had two reasons: Software and me.

Im coming from a Mac background - but the W700ds is pretty cool.
1) I would have something like the 'glass' track pad on the new macbook pros. (No need to even push the 'track pad button'...
1a) Do this having one central wacom...it would also make it larger...drop the current mini trackpad
2) OS-X...as much as I would like one of these, I have not yet been able to adjust to Windows. (I know, this is in Apples court.)
Cool product ideas though...keep pushing the envelope...
