If only 20 shots total were fired, and nobody hit anybody, how many more times would Bell have backed up his car to slam it into the occupied van, or attempted to hit Isnora (who was on foot) again?
I don't think the cops belong in jail. 31 shots were fired by Detective Michael Oliver because from his position, there was return fire coming from the car. That's the only reason he kept shooting. He didn't know it was the shots from his fellow officers. Two of them were on the opposite side of Bell's car.
Plus... the 19 shots fired by 4 other people hit nobody.... plus, 11 of Oliver's shots hit nobody.
I think you could be missing the point. Yes the individual police officers should have been charged. But this is not a isolated insidence in terms of the treatment of black people by the system. The police are institutional racist, a black man life is not valued. Snipes gets 3 years for tax, Vicks for dog fighting, Jenna 6 for a fist fight at school. But a black unarmed man gets shot 50 times and the verdict is not guilty.
I do get the larger point those who are concerned are trying to make. I am not trying to expand the argument past this individual case. If you want to discuss the broader topic of police brutality then we can do that but don't mix the two. You have brought up a multitde of issues sentencing, policing. The guy from Survivor(gay Richard) got a year in jail for not paying taxes one year Snipes evaded taxes for a decade,he should be held accountable. Jenna 6 has nothing to do with this
You dont see the larger point. The criminal 'justice' system is institutionally racist. It dont matter that the police were black/mixed that shot him up. The fact that black people are racially profiled as threats is proved when the Police approached with guns, and why? What did they do? They wanted to ask some question with guns drawn? This case shows that the protection of black and working class human rights is not important to the system.
Ask yourself has this every happened to a white man.
straight, I must say u have a great point I agree 100% w/what u are saying.u sound like a very well educated person and the way u put this together is how i would put it!Its NOT about race!I"m sick of ppl always thinking its about race.its about police brutailty.and for RESISTENCIAA to be so norrow minded and think its race is why the big mess is going on in NYC.There is NO REASON for Al Sharpton to get involved all he does is start trouble!the prosecution failed to sufficiently prove the case!
You a lawyer now? You just learned about the facts today brother, so do some more reading before making statements. Maybe you should read about the history of the NYPD and how white supremacy has always been at the core, they just got sued for it!!!! and lost. Now they put sold out cops of color who view their own people as the problem. And the other non color cop is WHITE. If u r russian, irish, or english, you still WHITE!!! You a cop?
No I am not a lawyer or a cop. Also I am not siding with the NYPD, as I stated these men should be in jail. My point was the prosecution failed to sufficiently prove the case, they should have been able to prove that some law was broken! Additionally, unless you have some on the record statements or accounts from witness testimony that show your allegations that the "cops of color" some how see their ppl as the problem then you shouldn't level those charges. Please Respond.
Thank you for being educated and actually looking the case on how it was presented. 51 shots was definately over the top but 31 came from one detective. When you open fire on anything that you percieve as a threat it is difficult to ascertain whether or not there was return fire until afterwords when you recall the event. The person that fired 31 times should have recieved at the very least reckless endangerment, but pros. witnesses were the reason they lost the case. Tragic

A life regardless of colour is important.

The Sean Bell case needs to go to Federal court with better lawyers.
