@tinyliz52 If you tune into gold on the radio they do play some of these records, not very often but sometimes, also radio wales saturday morning 9am to 11am owen money show also same presenter on sunday 2 30 to 4 30 pm.This is a fabulous singer who i think did not get the recognition he deserved.
Crying here, brings back lovely memories of my mum playing his LP and singing along, Im surprised I actually know the words!! Have tried to find his version of Hava Nagila, dont suppose you have it???
My Fathers fav song (his party piece) he died from a heart attack in 2000 .... I'm only out of hospital after suffering a heart attack and the first tune I played when I got on the computer was this one .......
This man is my father. This was one of my favorite songs together with "She Wears My Ring". And as I reach my 50th birthday today, I am always reminded of the good times we've had through the years. It is so nice to hear so many beautiful comments. Thank you all for continuing to support him.
@madmanufanforever Dean, In 1968 I was just happened to visit First Assembly of God Church in Lakeland, Florida and your father got up and sang a song called 'Babylon is Fallen'. Forty five years later I still remember that experience. Just recently I looked him up and was disappointed that so little of his music is available and apparently no videos. I didn't know at the time that I was witnessing a part of history, the greatest voice and presence of our life time. Oh to go back, Gary
Any singer - male or female - who can provoke an emotional reaction has GOT to be exceptional. The tone, passion, clarity and sheer beauty of Solomon King's voice is guranteed to bring tears to my eyes... and I'm a 50 year old man!
The real tragedy is that this guy was never really the superstar treatment he shoudl have received. How bloodty sad and annoying that so-called 'stars' who could not hold a condle to him became feted as they while this guy languished virtually unnoticed.
Love this, only previously heard version by Pat Lynch & the Airchords (Irish Showband scene). Both versions great, have never heard of Solomon King. Love his powerful voice!
This record was on the juke box of my local pub in 1968-69. I was 18 at the time and all the regulars were around the same age- up to their early 20s. Nobody over 25 ever went in the pub, yet this song was played constantly. When you consider the great music that was around at the time, this is testament to how truly great this song was.
I have the album with this and several others on including She Wears My Ring and I think there should be a CD of this so many more people can enjoy Solomon King music. He has always been a favourite of mine, SO, I am going to produce one, just have to sort out the copyright fees and then all systems go.
Gerry - I discovered Solomon King in 1967 when I resided in Mauritius and heard 'She wears My Ring'.His great voice attracted my interest and I rushed to the shops to buy the follow-up 'When We Were Young'.I bought all of his Singles releases after that and completed my collection with his 3 album releases.Iam now 60 years old and I shall never forget his amazing voice.
@ggboribon Hello, i 'm a mauritian , still living there. Funny enough, Mauritius is the only place i've heard Solomon King. My parents had the LP with that song. The record is still here but in a very bad state. I tried to record it in MP3 but inaudible !. Looked for that album during my trips abroad without success. And i learned that he passed away a few years ago. Sad
Very underrated singer, saw him live in the British Legion club in Guisborough in the 1970's I remember we where all overwhelmed by the range of his voice.
@hannah1184 I met Solomon Back in 1979, He was Living In Manchester and became friends of My uncle, He came to My home town and raised a lot of money for local charities. He was a very very Big guy, He had a great Powerful voice. He was also a Backing singer for Elvis Presley in the Early days, And I also read He was the 1st white Backing singer for Billie Holiday.
At 6 ft 8 inches tall it is said, apparently, that some TV interviewers refused to have him on their shows unless he sat down. Stupid little twattocks! His voice would have towered above them anyway. A singing voice like a buried treasure chest.
I agree with you - he has unmatchable vocal range.
I posted this in "She wears my ring."
"When I was 15, I was totally taken up by one of the most powerful voices which was able to descend to the lows and ascend to the highs without a compromised pitch. If Solomon King felt that he was the best singer in the day, I would fully agree with him. Powerful voice that bring powerful memories of my youth. This song cannot be sung any better - 100 to 100 salutations from me."
What a magnificent voice - I defy any singer to match the vocal range that Solomon King possessed. Thanks very much for sharing "When We Were Young" - it is a treasure.
Personally, I am a die-hard Jim Reeves fan, but I believe Jim would have taken his hat off to Solomon King had he lived long enough to hear him.
@tdsouza743 Solomon King's vocal range can be possessed by other recording artists. It is his voice quality, his smooth diaphragm singing style and his stamina that other artists lack.
In this song, he sounded like he was singing on the mountain top and his voice really echoed. If you love this song sung by Solomon King, I am rather surprised that you're a die-hard fan of Jim Reeves who had a very simple singing style.
This is so beautiful, i have this on a cassette only, this brings back memories, thanks so much for adding this classic from Solomon, simply beautiful.
omg! I did'nt know he sang this song. I heard Englebert Humperdinck's version, and always love it. But this, this is absalutely wonderful. THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!
Bloody awesome singer. Can't get his records, cassettes or CD's for love nor money. Why don't EMI re-market his music so that his family left behind can benefit from his amazing talent.
I am married to one of Solomon King's sons. It is so nice to hear these comments and know that people still enjoy his music. This is my husbands favourite song of his dad's.
I am from jersey and my mum and dad saw him many times there. My dad had his album and it was one of the many albums that got played on a sunday morning . those were the good old days.
I remember this song from my high school days, in Sri Lanka, 40 years ago. We rated it as most difficult song that was ever sung in popular music. My opinion has not changed, since.
