  • now if only you can attack other race's cities/forts with your own raiding parties.

  • Hmm, I was going to go to sleep 45 minutes ago... Damn you! *shakes fist*

    Great videos, thanks.

  • YAY! High quality sound.

  • Question about the dumped stones: your dwarves are still able to use them right? Can your dwarves still make sandstone doors if you've dumped all the sandstone in your fortress in a garbage dump? (Please reply using "@Ildamos" easier to track replies this way.) Thanks for any helpful replies!

  • @ildamos Thought i mentioned that in the vid, mhh. Anyway yeah you can use the stone, HOWEVER, you need to reclaim them with [d], [b], [c] before your dwarves will use them.

  • @captnduck Must've missed that bit. I'll watch this vid again. Thanks for making this game more accessible for beginners!

  • @captnduck Was a noob and didnt know how to cut down a tree..watched these and now im off brewing slicing up alligators and making traps :) thanks.

  • a 3d version of this with mouse support would be amazing anyone know anything like that? btw i already play minecraft and yeah i love that game i just want more complexity for building and mining :3

  • @Alakon9x All hail the mincraft halloween update. :D Have fun in hell. (for people who don't play minecraft: The halloween update makes people able to make a portal to a level representing hell.

  • this would be a totally awesome game if it had a good interface and graphics. its still really cool but somthing with the same gameplay and actual sprites would be the best thing ever. sombody should make that.

  • @guywith5pies There are graphical tilesets available if you look for them.

  • @D0rcus yeah but the game engine can only handle so much quality right? (im not really sure but it seems that way) im talking about making the tiles bigger and implimenting "real" graphics.

  • @guywith5pies MineCraft has a similar concept and is basically a first person of this game.

  • @TheFireMiner hahahahahaha i am so glad more people know about that game now. although minecraft is awesome it doesent really have the complexity, yknow

  • @guywith5pies Yea, but, it is worth mentioning as it was based off of this game and started as this game. Then it became infiniminer-like

  • I kind of wish I could click more. I'm pretty bad at hotkeys really.

  • This. Game. Is. Fucking. Brilliant.

  • Ah blast it, for some reason i don't have a brewer D:<

  • @darkassasin66 Even if you have nobody with skills in brewing, you can assign a dwarf to brew. Find the dwarf either in the [U]nit menu, or press V to select him, and P to view his preferences.

If you open [L]abors you can assign any dwarf the "Brewing" labor.

He goes over this in the video when he disables the several hauling labors for one of his dwarves.

  • First of all I would like to say how helpful these tutorials are and to thank you immensely. I do have one question though. If you pile something in a garbage dump, is it not usable anymore? It seems you could use garbage dumps instead of stockpiles as a sort of exploit, seeing as they can take up only 1 tile.

  • I can't seem to find the perfect place to set up my fortress some don't have mountains some have mountains everywhere and some have nothing...

  • again, look up the DF wiki (google it) to answer both of your questions.

  • Geweldig Nederlands accent... Herkende meteen waar je van komt :) Bedankt voor de tutorial, zonder je videos zou ik nog niet half zo ver zijn als nu :P

  • Oh hey! I just learned something new! I'm still only on my second fortress.. (first one was abandoned on a crappy computer) and I've got a population of 80 dwarfs.. but I never used/knew about zones! Specifically, the garbage dump feature. Man, and here I was building a 20-z level stone stockpile for nothing! xD Thanks Cap'n Duck! Now, to watch your other 33 tutorial videos for some more nice little tips I thought I knew. :D

  • With a dump, couldn't you theoretically make a one time spot over a botomless pit or a deep shaft with a room underneath?

  • You're right I believe, many players combine dumps with the shaft to create a garbage pit/refuse dump. Pretty handy.

  • what version of dwarf fortress is this?

  • The latest.

  • i meant the mod

  • Thank you very very much for these videos. I would be totally lost without this. You rule captnduck!

  • So if I forgot to make someone a brewer I'm totally fucked?

  • No, through the labor preferences menu for a dwarf you can make *any* dwarf brew. If you forgot to make someone a brewer that means they are not very good at it. But they will learn on the job :)

  • Dude this tutorial is great. Thanks, i got stuck when my Dorfs ran out of alcohol.

  • dwarf fortress is the only game that has about 7 hours of instructional video, and it's still in fucking pre-alpha.

  • I don't think it'll ever LEAVE pre-alpha.

  • Yet it still, RULES. Omg I love this game.

    I'm losing sleep over it.

  • It is in fact in alpha. Pre-alpha is before any release is made. Alpha is a release that is not feature-complete.

  • It's funny how the game looks like it's really complete already though (like a v0.9 or something) but this is even before the fucking beta release :O

  • Thanks for the videos, but part of Dwarf Fortress is also experimenting yourself, and, as the help file says, LOSING IS FUN! The infinite 1x1 dump is actually a bug, and I try not to rely on it since it will be removed in the future.

  • A while ago, I left a suggestion buried in one of the suggestion threads that we replace stockpile dumping with stockpile "swapping," that is, if there is an inappropriate item in a stockpile and a dwarf is hauling an item to that stockpile, he swaps the items and drops the inappropriate item off on the closest non-stockpile empty square.

  • I didn't know about zone wide dumping. Nice.

  • lol you hear this alot but thank you buddy for these videos.

i was hesitant in starting dwarf fortress.. mainly for the fact that it looks so overwhelming.. you explain everything perfectly and in doing that you take the "WTF" factor out of the game!

  • THANK YOU FOR THESE VIDEOS!!!!!

  • A thousand thanks for taking the time to put together these tutorials! (Many T-words here..)

  • Dumping stones is kinda lame if you ask me, tons of stones from carving a whole fortress out of the mountain and they all fit in one space? I always make a few large stockpiles for stone outside.Later you have dozens of dwarves with nothing to do, that way they can earn their booze ;-)

  • This is just what I needed. I've been meaning to get into Dwarf Fortress for quite some time and I've always been intimidated by the complexity and willful unintuitive nature of the UI but these guides have helped me to get into what is probably the greatest free game I've ever played. Sir, I salute you.

  • i was so counfused by this game but your guides are very clear. also your voice is cool! cheers!

  • (pausing the video to get a refill of vodka.. aaah)

  • I love dwarf fortress and i love you.

  • This game seems like the coolest thing ever, but it is quite daunting to start it. Thank you for making sense of it for us newbs. Keep up the great work!

  • @annihilatus666 Well instead of paying with monies, you'll have to pay in determination... kinda...
