im starting to notice a trend of whenever something is shot, launched, or propelled, people give you shit about accuracy. in your next shooting vid you should give people a challenge and see what they do, because i believe you are a better marksman than most of them.
i bet the normal lamp would have done better if it had that little piece of plastic that took most of the shock like the rest of the lamps .. cheater!!!
@ExpertOfSound I did some work for them. It was a pain in the butt though. They sent me a coffee mug and a nice jacket. I think they were surprised how well their tubes held up too.
Ever see an LED burn up? We're not talking about the little ones in your toys, we're talking about the high power, high output LEDs used for indoor lighting in the same place you'd find fluorescent tubes.
And don't forget, they have to use all those chemicals in the manufacturing process as well.
Interesting stuff. My son works for a local billiards hang out, and a rambunctious customer busted a fluorescent lamp over a pool table, and it cost upwards of $500.00 between the felt and the labor to put it on, and Im not sure how they disposed of the old ruined felt, probably just trashed it and let the mercury, glass and dust head for the land fill. This has to be a better option. Well done!
@MrRootbrian You're a tool. Most every chemical used in LED lamps are toxic. Here's a short list: InGaN AlInGaP GaAs GaP GaN Trimethyl indium Trimethyl gallium Trimethyl aluminium Ammonia Phosphene Arsene Phosphoric Oxides Phosphoric Nitrides PMMA PMMI
Nice video man. i Actually work for this company (in the office right now matter of fact). we have been playing around with ideas of how to market the coated bulbs on youtube... you did it for us. thanks!
Thank you! I sent a link to Shat -r-shield and they got a kick out of it too. Bill asked me if I wanted to film more abuse testing for him and was supposed to send some samples for me to film, but he must have forgotten. I like your glow-in-the-dark lamps too. Very innovative company!
Those tubes are tough! That slab of wood was really taking some abuse and the tubes hardly looked damaged. The end shot was definitely the most entertaining though - blowing things up is much more fun! XD
Nice hearing from you! The question I had after doing this video was, "why aren't ALL fluorescent lights required to have this safety coating on them?" I had some reservations about shooting the uncoated lamp, but it did hammer home the effectiveness of the coating shat-r-shield uses. They want me to make some videos for them now, which should be fun.
That's a good idea. I am certain you'd do well with it. I've had a big learning curve since I had to learn the most basic camera adjustments from the get-go.
The shat-r-shield lamps and bulbs are the best. The coatings they use or the way they put it on is way better than the competitors. That's all we use. Impressive video.
Thank you. I've used other brands where the plastic coating turns yellowish and brittle. I was so impressed how well Shat-r-shields held up that I contacted the company so they could see this video. They were pretty surprised as well!
When filming this, I used a few different focal-lengths, and at times did not focus on the wood at all, but wanted to get some clear shots of the tubes just leaving the barrel, or midway, or 18" from the wood. Everything can't be in focus at one time so I had to choose the different areas I wanted in focus.
I knew you could throw them around and twist them in knots and stuff, but I thought it would still fail in a test like this! I'm not sure if Shat-r-shield ever did any testing like this.
Lol! I should send them this video. They might get a kick out of it. As an industrial electrician, I have used their products in the food industry for years. I've broken a few unshielded tubes which is the last thing you want in a food processing environment!
Very cool! It's nice to not have to worry about the tubes breaking and getting phosphorus, glass, and mercury all over the place. Quick way to turn a 5 minute job into a hazmat situation!
thats cool how they dont shatter all over. is it just some sort of plastic wrap around it? and the normal light was sick. probably a pain to clean tho. can i expect to see a cat video soon? you seem to have some good footage.
It's some sort of plastic coating that is incredibly tough. I didn't think they would hold up to a cannon firing. I expected a huge mess from the plain tube, but there is not much left other than some dust, there no pieces bigger than 1/4". I want to do a good cat video but I haven't gotten "killer" footage yet!
hmmm. well when they make those hurricane/shatter proof windows, all they do is put some layers of plastic, like the plastic used in water bottles. i understand what you mean about "killer" footage.

You should sell these videos to whoever makes those Shat-R-Shield lamps, as a testimony to their strength!
:D
Oh, and make sure you send them the ones with the head in it. LOL

why use Flourescent lamps as projectiles??? wouldn't it work with something else?
JaasterMareel 1 year ago
@JaasterMareel It was just a spur of the moment thing, we ran out of other objects to shoot so we tried the lamps. We had a couple cases of them.

That would definitely be a good application for these safety tubes.

I have dropped a tube in my garage and it broke into a bunch of pieces. I am going to see where they sell these shaterproof bulb. Nice video
george414nc 2 years ago
Regardless, florescent tubes & CFL (Mini/Micro curly tubes) still contain mercury.
Since they already have shatter-proof incandescent bulbs, LED's completely surpass them for being the most durable :D Not toxic either :)
That was some serious abuse testing.

Will those windows still break and the layer of plastic is designed to keep the glass from blowing inside the home?
taofledermaus 2 years ago
yeah. the glass breaks inside but the plastic doesnt break, keeping it all together so you dont get flying glass and your window is still sealed.
