Actually youre wrong about "editing the game files." Basically when a 3d modeler creates something there consist of 3 basic types of files: the model, the texture map, and the animation. The model is the physical appearance of the crossbow where as the texture map is basically a switchable "skin". Using this, you can easily switch skins by changing the texture maps. So you cant quite say it was purposely done, but from a coder and 3d modeler, one can suspect that this is in fact a glitch.

he's wrong. this is a glitch, and they did not have to design the way it looks for every gun, but rather just every texture. the "way it looks" is generated automatically through use of 3d filters and texture images. the 3d filters are a series of algorithms that define "way it looks on every gun", by defining how much shine, glare, glow, w/e there based on a combination of arch, angle, and light. they're algorithms that were designed to be able to reuse over and over again
