  • For a better test, I would recommend playing Combat Arms on it. It's definitely a much better test of what ubuntu can do.

  • OMG DUDE THER IS A GOD I DOUBTED YOU, I WENT TO THE UBUNTU STORE ON MY DELL INSPIRON MINI THAT I GOT FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL FOR FREE :) AND THEN I WENT AND DOWNLOADED OPEN ARENA, WHEN I SEARCHED FIRST PERSON SHOOTER'S BEFORE THIS VIDD I SAW OPEN AENEA CLICKED IT TO SEE THE SCREENSHOT AND SAW SOMEPIXALTED CRAP, BTU WHEN I DOWNLOADED AND PLAYEDE IT , IT WAS LIKE UNREAL TOURNAMENT IT WENT SO F**KIN FAST AND I PLAY IT LIKE CRAZT THNK YOU DUDE I CREATED A YOUTUEB ACCOUNT JUST TO SAY THNX AND SUBSCRIBE

  • um can somebody please reply to this comment i have a dell inspiron mini netbook that has intel atom inside and i got it from my high school i just wanted to know will the gaming be better or worse than the netbook your using becuase i love first person shooter thank's and god bless :) also world peace ;)

  • @TheDestroyerx1 %95 of all netbooks have all the same basic hardware so it should be the exact same

  • @MN12BIRD i have a laptop with ati 4200 mobility is that good for gaming

  • @kris10ish Not for modern games. It's just AMD's basic onboard graphics it's not a dedicated GPU for gaming.

  • @MN12BIRD well i can play crysis but its not on board its mobility and also can play nearly every game on high

  • @kris10ish Radeon 4200 is onboard. It's part of the AMD 785G North Bridge. Mobility just means Radeon gaphics in a notebook it has nothing to do with being IGP "onboard" or a dedicated GPU and Radeon 3200,4200, 4250 are all similar IGP "onboard" graphics. It's pretty good for onboard though and onboard IGP's can still have dedicated video memory not always shared. Just because it's not a dedicated GPU doesn't mean it sucks look at the new Radeon HD6250's they're pretty damn good IGPs.

  • @MN12BIRD yeah i get you becuse my laptop has i think it 1 gig dedicated memory

  • you dont need to be a linux expert, and, if you want to run Command & Conquer on netbook, you want to go to cnc-comm(dot)com and find some info about a project called DDraw

  • I don't even bother with 3d games on my netbook because of some sort of retarded thing that causes me to only be able to walk without aiming and if I want to aim I have to stand still and this applies for any 3d game with my netbook at any settings, so I'm always stuck with playing games made in the 1990's like wolfenstein 3d so I can play games without that problem

  • Thanks for the open arena recommenndation ive been playing it on my netbook and im impressed other than the fact that i dont like these kind of FPS

  • i talk about open arena

  • Ehh, my asus eee pc 1000 doesn't run it so SMOOTH, how the ... you run it so smooth? I use linux with LXDE (peppermint)

  • @djmattyman Open Arena has a download for Linux just go to their official site and as for ZSNES for Linux I just googled it and found it.

  • there are the same number of emulators(or more) for windows, and a lot more games, therefore it's not necessary to put linux on your netbook. Most of the emulators are open source, therefore ported to many platforms. I had a Asus EEE 701 with 900MHz Celeron (underclocked at 630) and it ran quake 1,2,3 Unreal tournament, starcraft, diablo2, and almost every game that came out until 2002-2003. Also it runs Nintendo 64 emulator at full speed

  • @valivondtru Oh yeah the point of this vid isn't that Linux is somehow better than Windows for gaming on a netbook but just that you can at least game with Linux on a netbook that's all. Certainly this is nothing Windows XP couldn't do and like you said there is way more software for Windows.

  • @MN12BIRD How ca linuw be better when you have to use up CPU usage just running the emulator???? im not tryin to be a smart ass i just wanna know the logic behind it

  • @JIPPIX94 I wasn't trying to prove that this was "better" than anything else but rather just that it can be done and that it works pretty well. It was more just for my own curiousity as I don't use Linux much and I wanted to try netbook edition on a netbook while I had it to play with. The netbook wasn't even mine I was just fixing it up for someone.

  • @JIPPIX94 it doesnt the game uses up the juice...

linux and mac programs are extremly effecent windows programs take up all the cpu so that what the emulator doing

  • @valivondtru Linux is LOTS more stale and virus-imune than Windows. Plus, it can better use the processors power.

  • @merkur32123 i know, that was not my point saying which OS is better, i just said it was easier. I don't even remember the full video, (my comment 5 months old) :P

  • what model was this?

  • Wow....

This video is convincing me to put linux on my netbook.

  • how to you put windows xp back on my lg x110 with ubuntu 9.04

  • oh and i forgot to mention that i had zsnes on my acer aspire one while it still had windows

  • Hi, i have an acer aspire one (same model, but dark blue) running ubuntu netbook remix 9.04. I had windows xp crash on me and now i'm much happier. Great video man. Linux really sets your netbook free.

  • first one looked like Quake Live

  • Thats pretty cool! that runs really well on the netbook! who would of thought!? but some of them are pretty good especially some of the hi end hp and dell netbooks, but Acer makes a really good computer too, good vid man!

  • Hey do Mac Apps or Games work on Ubuntu?

  • Not directly, but there are emulators of Macintosh out there.

  • isn't ubuntu the name of the adopted son on the goode family?

  • there are actually some videos of benchmarks and stuff on youtube. comparing linux and windows.

  • won't be replacing my quad core Phentom media box anytime soon. If I have to plug it in anyway I always go for more power.

  • too bad games are such a huge drain on the battery.

  • You can see the lazer on the side of the netbook as you lift your mouse lol.

  • ScummVM works great on Linux also. Which means you can play Putt-Putt all you want on your Linux machine!

  • hahaha

  • great video

  • Hey MN12BIRD, i just wanna thank you for all the videos you've put up. No matter what subject you touch, it's always intresting! :)

  • Great video. Glad you showed this. It gives me exactly the type of info I need to help a buying decision. Thanks :)

  • i bet avp 2 would play i use to be able to play it on my old intel celeron laptop. i only have 491 sub poor me. but then agian i stoped making videos when youtube was playing with my partnership oh well

  • play Doom the BEST FPS!!

  • @dde12321 for sure I love the non linear concept .

  • Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein are BY FAR the best FPS games out there!

  • Where can you get this game from?

  • @bubbles867 Google it.

  • I used to play Quake III on a Athlon XP 750 with probably a Nvidia TNT card with about 32mb of memory back in the early 2000's..long time ago.

  • can you install win7 on this?

and what video card is that having?

  • I have been thinking about getting a netbook or Laptop for gaming and internet on the go. What would be a good brand. When the time comes to get a laptop or net-book. I plan on plunking down 500 or 700 USD.This game looks like a lot of fun. Great vid!

  • I have a Dell Mini 10v. Nice keyboard, windows 7, really sharp screen, decent battery life and 160gb hard drive. 1gb ram 1.6ghz Atom (standard stuff). They're pretty cheap (£220) and I can highly recommend.

  • Hard to say what brand is best. They all have good and bad models. Read as many reviews as you can!

  • True, True. Yes sir.

  • just some constructive criticism, please put your plug links in the right, I dont wanna ht a link in the middle of a video

  • lol i so don't need one, but if i had tho dough i would def buy a netbook, just not pink tho lol!

  • if anyone can help me, i have a IBM thinkpad and i am running it on window's XP, i had it for a while now and, sadly thought its going really slow, when it comes to loading a program, i have to wait at least 20 seconds to load Microsoft word while using another program....can anyone ask why?

  • wtf? that runs really smooth

  • WOW! I didnt' know a netbook was capable of that =)

Does that have the 1.6Ghz CPU in it?

  • Yep it's the 1.6GHZ ATOM!

  • they probably have a decent video chip in there as well

  • I had postal II and GTA III running on mine. It handled it perfectly.

  • Very nice, time to hang up my Dreamcast as an emulator...

  • Nice This might get a lot of people to try linux! +_+

  • I play games in class with this xD It's great.

  • linux can be a great gaming platform and it shows, wine's compatibility is pretty good and can run some of the newer pc games which just blows me away, the frame rates are actually sometimes faster than in windows itself,i have to put ubuntu back on my pc and ill have a dual boot

  • Yeah. I'm more sad that OpenGL isn't used more often. I've heard it's capable of all the "pretty effects" that DX10 can do, but it's more efficient. Look at Doom 3 that was a mainstream hit to use OpenGL instead of D3D. I think MS just has the stranglehold on PC gaming. I did that overclocking the e8400 to 4GHZ vid and the "heaven" benchmark has DX10 and OpenGL options and I tell you man I can't tell the difference! OpenGL looks just as nice and the frame rate was about the same.

  • I run a Linux based MAME Cabinet.

  • cant do modern games but for the odd old thing yeah it can run emulators and open GL games

a real test would be the linux version of doom 3

  • I heard that some guys ran Doom 3 on one of these. I guess they kept getting told they couldn't do it so they did. They overclocked the thing like mad and I'm sure lowered a lot of settings. But if it's true that is cool. I would like to see that!

  • no doubt it could run the engine just not very high settings lol

if you could find doom 3 or quake 4 i would appreciate that

  • I have Doom 3 somewhere. But I don't have the netbook anymore. I was only fixing it for someone and had to give it back :(

  • oh okay i was just wondering what settings it would run at

lol dont you still have that old IBM lappy? jk

  • wow that looks great, i might install some emulators on an old pentium 3 that I have (might make a video about it) as i said before it is also running ubuntu 9.10

  • Linuc is better than windows

  • Actually I'm going to drive 1 mile for every new sub no matter what.

But man you're idea is better...not having to drive all those miles if I catch up in subs. Then I wouldn't have to suffer all that boring ass driving. :P

  • Oh I see! Thanks for the video response that will make it easy for everyone to find now !

  • Honestly I'm a little scared now that you've given a shout out. Of all the people to mention the challenge you've got the most subs by far. So this could potentially force me to drive MANY more miles.

  • @JerryTerrifying

Be scared ... very scared! And make sure to carry lots of water bottles on your trek through the desert! =P

  • Lol everywhere I go I have this gallon jug of water. :P For my Desert Oddyssey I'm probably going to have to keep a coffe pot to piss in :(

  • @JerryTerrifying

Hahahaha! A good ol fresh brew of "lemon tea"? ROFL

  • can u hook a netbook harddrive into a pc?,, like for backing up etc?

  • Yeah of course. These are really no different than any notebook except they lack an optical drive. The Hard Drive in this is a standard SATA hard drive.

  • how many snes games can the notebook store without it causing any problems?awesome video! keep up the excellent work!

  • Dude this thing has a 160GB HD in it! You could probably store every SNES game ever released for fun! Hahahaha I should try that!

  • YES! I wasn't expecting the plug in this video. :D

  • Jake:

I can see that the Acer netbook runs emulation games just fine. However, what if one was to play a game over a period of let's say 2 to 3 hours, would we see any issues? overheating etc.? Just wondering.

  • I really don't see why. The system has a fan and it's controlled by BIOS. I've heard of some early models having overheating issues but they got fixed with a BIOS update that ran the fan faster to keep it cool.

  • @MN12BIRD

In your other video, you stated that netbooks were not very good in term so handling media. I presume that this applies to movie or video files. Is this the case? Again let's say in duration of the movie is 2 hours plus.

  • I don't remember saying that? They can definitely playback xvid/divx video just fine. You could easily play lots of movies on it!

  • @MN12BIRD

Maybe I misinterpreted your comment. In any case, this is great news! I've seen a fellow use his netbook on the bus and it looked like he was watching a movie. For a guy that commutes to and from work each day on the bus/train, this would be a great gadjet to have especially if you just want to watch a 30 minute or 1 hour show!

    Thanks for the answer(s) Jake!

  • Open Arena is like Quake Live which is like Quake III Arena lol

  • Is Ubuntu any good fro running MAME as well?

  • I *think* it runs fine in Wine.

  • Not sure. I bet you Linuxfanman would know exactly how well it would run though!

  • man i hate openarena

  • same

  • i can actually play halo on my laptop on a touch pad

  • IT WORKS!

  • Yah...that suckz...i'm having a lot of this error lately too...

  • wonder if ubuntu supports newer games or not

  • @Bluewo1f

I don't think so, because Ubuntu Kernel =! Windows Kernel

  • Who the hell is rating a Video 5 Stars, if he didnt even see it?

  • "try again later"

  • Its not youtube's fault. This is what happends with recent uploaded videos, still processing. Wait for an hour and it will work just fine.

  • @somoza

No, that's the Issue with the Video Quality

A video should actually be available right after the Upload, but with a low quality

  • Fuck my life.

    Error.

Does anyone happen to know what's been happening to youtube lately?

  • @SeaShellNecklaceBrah

    Same Here

  • Annoying isn't it? Happens to me a lot lately on here.

  • @SeaShellNecklaceBrah

    Well,

YT has a lot of Server load :D

    Thats what's happening
