  • I start to tear up a little at 4:19 very rarely did Johnny ever hit notes like that.

    RIP Hunter

  • R.I.P freeman

  • really great puttogether, had it on favs for years

  • He who makes a beast of himself, rids himself of the pain of being a man. ...

  • If you play with fire,

  • One of my favorite HST tributes. Beautiful song and some great snap shots of his life. Growing up in the hills of Kentucky, I can relate to a lot of the frustrations that Hunter experienced as a kid and young adult. When I first read his works and saw the Vegas movie, I couldn't believe that there was someone out there that look at the world in the same light as myself. Unfortunately for the rest of us Outlaws living in this unjust time, our world would never allow another HST to thrive.

  • HST

i can't explain in words how much respect i had for that man,he was like a cult hero for what he created (gonzo journalism) how he made it.(drink drugs debauchery, insanity). His books where amazing.

He is a just a god

it took me about 10 mins to write that and it sounds terrible.

can't explain what he was to me :P

  • rip johnny cash rip hunter thompson

  • The weird never die... they live on in the minds of those that have ever had the pleasure to hear them, to read them or to meet them... RIP - The good doctor.

  • is there a concrete reason why its johnny cash spiritual?

(excepting the fact that its a song about dead and sorrow)

  • I had been listening to the song the day it happened ... it captured my mood at the time and I went with it ...

  • never forgotten

  • rip two great men mr cash and hunter! i got into singapore slings because of him! many so many nights of fear in loating while high!

  • I'll never forget you, Hunter!

But every single book that I read reminds me of you. I love you and miss you.

  • Every book you read reminds you of Hunter S Thompson? That's incredible.. Look up the word incredible...and that's what I mean..I'm only useing the misconception of incredible to show you what I think of your comment.....I think it's dumb...and completely lacking of conviction..

  • You're right; idk what I was getting at with that comment. Probably made whilst under the heavy influence of alcohol.

  • I can't find Spiritual on limewire, anyone have any luck finding this song?

  • I was 15 when I read F&L in Las Vegas and figured if any small part of it were true he'd be lucky to live past 40. As it turned out, he could probably have lived to 80 but I think he took to heart it was better to burn out than to fade away. But if F&L in Vegas had been his only book, his legacy would be great. As it is, he also left us Hells Angels, F&L on the Campaign Trail & others as a great legacy.

  • R.I.P. Hunter, u was a great man

  • moving tribute.

  • Nice job. J. Hunter Cashdollar

  • This is beautiful.

  • it might just be me but ive seen alot of hst tributes and this is probably the best

  • great! favorite 5stars... best and peace all ways to all livingr8 creatures on the planet eARTh.

  • whats this song called?

  • "Spiritual" by Johnny Cash

  • Actually it's "Spiritual" by Josh Haden......performed by Johnny Cash.

  • Yes, Josh Haden sound better. Just a matter opinion. He was on David Letterman last night 12/02/08.

    Cheers,

    vp

  • Thank you for making this.

Thompson is an inspiration for me, may he rest in peace.

  • Love it. RIP HST.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!!

  • HST + Johnny Cash with Jack Nicholson from the shining are the best role models i can imagine, and they must of had one hell of a trip.

  • "so nice and always kept it real he always thought twice and thats why they had to steal"

  • i'm sorry...isn't the song called "spiritual"? i'm pretty sure it is...

i love hunter and johnny! two of the greatest artists we've ever had!

    thanks for the tribute!

  • You are 100 percent correct. Thank you so much for catching that. There's an explanation about why I mixed up the title, but it's long and boring. I'm changing it immediately. Thank you for the heads up and the comment.

  • Bantam - a very kewl and moving tribute.

    excellent choice of music, too.

i learned more about the practical realities of American politics by reading "F/L on the Campaign Trail '72" than i ever did in half a dozen college courses.

i dog-ear one copy of the Great Shark Hunt per year. the best single volume compendium of the Doc's works. the title essay is one of the funniest ever written.

    Senor Thompson? Senor Bloor?

  • I actually finished Hell's Angels for the first time a few weeks back and was simply blown away by the fact that it was someone's first major work.

His essay, "Security," (from THE PROUD HIGHWAY) which he wrote when he was 17 is taped to the wall in my kitchen and I keep a copy in my wallet. It's one of the most inspiring pages of writing I've ever read.

"Who is the happier man, he who braved the storm of life and lived or he who stayed securely on shore and merely existed?" - HST @ 17.

  • damn, what a loser

  • thank you!!! brillant two of the greats together. respect to you for compiling the footage and to the user that used the quote from fear and loathing(the movie) hst did not say that . it was a man by the name of johnson.

  • legend

  • what song title is this Johnny cash song?

  • The title of the song is "Ritual."

  • He Who Makes A Beast Of Himself gets rid of the pain of being a Man--DR.Thompson

  • thompson did not say that. it wasn't even his choice of qoutes to use it was terry gilliam who picked the quote

  • Thompson didn't say it, but he quoted it at the beginning of "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas", and if I remember correctly, he also quoted it in "Hell's Angels."

  • Wasn't he a homosexual?

  • it was just in print at the start of the movie. if you watch the commentary of fear and loathing in l.a., with hunter and terry gilliam assistant and another exec. producer thay say that terry was the one that picked the quote, and as far as the hells angels, well thats a whole 'nother conversation.

  • Whoever picked the quote for the movie, the fact is that Thompson himself used the quote more than once in his books. He didn't originate it; it comes from Samuel Johnson, who lived in 18th century England, but Thompson seemed to identify with it as an explanation for his own behavior. Your obtuseness on this point leads me to wonder if you have you ever actually read Thompon's books.

  • ouch,

    my soul hurts

  • Great message and pretty true to what I got the feeling Hunter felt.

  • Well, it sure did, man.

You did well. Johnny Cash, brilliant too.

  • Very good! Very well done.

    Extremely touching. RIP HST

  • Thanks ... it was a LONG night when I first got the news. I found myself scowering the internet for pictures until the sun came up ... the Cash song felt like a good fit with the pictures I found ...
