Thanks @waitingtoderail. I've been informed of this very fact in recent months, and as a result, I removed my comment with my tail between my legs. Strangely, it seems to have reappeared in order for me to be publicly corrected.
That said, I was basing my ill-informed comment on the fact that I'd seen a librarian at Nuremberg's Stadtbibliothek leafing through one of their copies of the chronicle wearing the Philistine's gloves.
@lettucegnome Librarians and archivists know that the damage risk by using gloves (ie., tearing because you can't get a feel for the pages) is greater than the damage risk by using clean hands to turn the pages. He would be a philistine if he WAS using gloves.
