I'm diggin this just the fact that it's very retro... Being that the law was passed on big tobacco and then the law suit. I use to watch the flintstones as a kid and i'm 44yrs. old I and never seen an cigarette commercial ever let alone on an cartoon.
I'd be like Peter Griffin or Homer Simpson in a cigarette ad. While unexpected and probably illegal in the US today, it wouldn't be shocking to see the characters in that situation, like it wasn't back then.
So let me get this straight, when I was taking Flintstone vitamins when I was a kid getting healthy and strong, Fred was promoting smokes....LOL...he did make it look appealing...
@exita99 when the flintstones first aired it was geared for "adults". It was based on the old Jackie Gleason "honeymooners" tv show.....Ralph Cramdon and his wife alice. It slowly evolved into a kids cartoon

Decades ago some stores would run a "tab" with a regular customer. At the end of the week or month the customer would pay it off. This practice seems to have gone the way of the dodo. ( or the caveman) that's probably why Fred left without paying.
Well..I mean they did more than just pitch cigarettes...they pitched Welch's grape jelly too. At least they didn't actually smoke in any of the cartoons.
al menos tenemos que agradecer que esos anuncios no eran parte del teleshow en si, osea, alabando un cigarro, mostrandolo como algo delicioso?! al fumador pasivo le da cancer, si alguien fuma serca de ti te hara daño.
@sjnz90, actually "The Flintstones" was marketed for adults when first released in 1960. But, the network found that more and more children were watching the show as much as adults. In later seasons, this and other Winston bits were simply edited out. Yes, smoking is sick. I'm glad I don't smoke or drink.
@fasteddie847 honestly......my father ate thick steaks all the time and it killed him from all the cholesterol. People have to decide if they want to live a long life void of all pleasure or a shorter life that they enjoyed
actually I like your comment very much.....it truly makes alot of sense...avoid human pleasure and you will live a very long life, and probably chances of a tasteless life with all the health benefits......however, seek human pleasure of all kinds and you will live less and probably die young with lack of health.....but, chances of living happily and gain much pleasure and probably die a happy death...probably...due to the fact that you satisified all your primitive urges...CHOSE!!!
@Virus2020 Its like I have always told people when this topic comes up.....I don't think smoking is any more dangerous than joining the military, riding a motorcycle or living in an urban area. I am 57 years old and for the first 35 years of my life i (and everyone else my age) had to breath car exaust with "lead" in it back when gasoline used lead as an additive. I managed a retail store 6 feet from a busy street....all day i breathed diesel and leaded gasoline fumes
Amygdalin (vitamin B17) is the preventative, cure & control of cancer. [anaplasia (an´plā´zh), n a regressive change in cells toward a more primitive or embryonic cell type. It is a prominent characteristic of malignancy in tumors.(NOTE: embryonic, which bolsters Scottish embryologist Dr. John Beard's trophoblast thesis on cancer which maintains that malignant cells and pre-embryonic cells are virtually indistinguishable.)] See: "World Without Cancer."
They say this isn't a childrens show. Then why have I been watching it all my life, and why is it on Boomerang? On The Flintstones, you never see Fred, Barney, or Wilma smoke anyway, except after Pebbles was born and Fred and Barney got run out by Miss Frightenshale, Pebbles nurse. They were advertising Welch's products by the time Pebbles was born according to You Tube.
Not Exactly a Bargain..Rocky did touch the filter Fred would have out in his mouth(hope he washed his hands, yeech).Maybe they were for Wilma,so Fred didn't care?Fred Himself is a Cigar Man if I remember well. I wonder what price they got back then for Gigantic, self sealing packs of Cigarettes.
@eagleofmiami In 1966, Anheiser-Busch made a 30 minute Flintstone cartoon for distributors of Busch Beer. Fred and Barney commented several times; "When you're due for a beer, Busch does it. You can't say beer better than Busch." So, to answer your question, it's Busch.
@mikecleona@mikecleona That's true!! I have a clear copy of that Flintstones beer industrial film/commercial, but it was too long to post in YouTube when I tried 3 years ago, and I didn't want to post it in pieces, though I think someone else has posted it in 3 parts...
@AmericanPowerBase this is before they realized the health risks of smoking. tobacco has always been a major cash crop in america since colonial times.

Yep that's the one thing that is constant, CHANGE.. we always will and always have.. So you never would have seen this commercial unless you had it on movie film or some film collector sold you a copy on video.
This is so wholesome and American! I knew they had that first commercial but not this one! Two cool dudes fist bumpin their butts and enjoying SMOOTH MELLOW TASTE! Ahhhh! Between the obesity and the smoking it's amazing Fred made it past two season let alone to "Fred and Barney Meet the Schmoo!".

0:21 when Rocky says "You bet your life!" it's sad because people who bought into the message of this commercial when it aired really did bet their life :-(
Cigarettes never have tar in them to start with. It forms as a product of burning. That's why companies go around saying that their products have 'no tar'

Bu then nobody buy the cigarettes if they were rocks. It's good advertising sense. Kinda like in a movie, it's Christmastime, the town is covered in snow and every building was covered up except for Burger King which is still clean and fresh, good way of advertising BK
In those days, stores gave credit to their best customers. Fred would have paid his bill eventually as in those days everybody trusted everybody else.
@QueenYavanna OMG, I noticed that too! We played this commercial about a year ago in a class about sociology and the media. I was the *only* person in the entire class who caught that Fred never paid for his cigarettes-- including the professor.
In my lifetime, I've never seen a cigarette made of 'pure tobacco'. When someone puts tobacco in a regular pipe, they have to keep lighting it because it keeps going out, but when someone lights a cigarette, it keeps burning all the way to the end, like a fuse!! I've always believed something was added to cigarette tobacco to keep it lit, so that the tobacco companies could sell more cigarettes, but that's just one man's opinion...
No, paper or no paper, the chemicals added to keep cigarettes burning will keep them burning. If you roll your own, they will always go out & you have to relight them.
Cigarettes DO have chemicals added to keep them burning. There is pending legislation now to remove these chemicals for fire hazard reasons. I used to roll my own organic tobacco, and yes, it went out constantly. At least there were no chemicals.
@weenielongus The normal cigarette's that they sell are treated with a lot of chemichals , i smoke tobacco at a bag , you can see the difference even in taste , smoke and smell. If i smoke a normal cigarette you can smell it even on my clothes.
actually no...THE FLINTSTONES aired in prime-time and it was aimed at adults. do you really think a show aimed at children would be pushing cigarettes? the problem that exists is when cartoons started to be thought of as only for kids and because of this mentality being honed into people's mind-set's a lot of people TODAY seem to forget or simply not even realize that cartoons were once aimed at adults. When cartoons started to be watched way more by kids, the adult themes were removed.
This show when it first came out was on a timeslot that came on when kids were supposed to be asleep. So it was actually aimed towards adults. So therefore it would make sense for the Flintstones to be used as marketing tools for an adult product.
Now we have the Flintstones used for children's vitamins. WTF happened??
The part of the commercial where the clerk says..."You bet your life."
Guess what...he did.

@weenielongus The normal cigarette's that they sell are treated with a lot of chemichals , i smoke tobacco at a bag , you can see the difference even in taste , smoke and smell. If i smoke a normal cigarette you can smell it even on my clothes.

@weenielongus That's why i don't smoke normal cigarette's anymore.

Yes, "The Flintstones" was a prime-time sitcom, not a 'children's' show (just like "The Family Guy" today)...

So I guess 20-30 years down the road, Family Guy will seem more "innocent?"

actually no...THE FLINTSTONES aired in prime-time and it was aimed at adults. do you really think a show aimed at children would be pushing cigarettes? the problem that exists is when cartoons started to be thought of as only for kids and because of this mentality being honed into people's mind-set's a lot of people TODAY seem to forget or simply not even realize that cartoons were once aimed at adults. When cartoons started to be watched way more by kids, the adult themes were removed.

You know, FOR KIDS!
Inferno566 2 years ago 2
This show when it first came out was on a timeslot that came on when kids were supposed to be asleep. So it was actually aimed towards adults. So therefore it would make sense for the Flintstones to be used as marketing tools for an adult product.
Now we have the Flintstones used for children's vitamins. WTF happened??

Pssst - Switch to Kent!
True, menthol cigarettes might sooth your throat, cure cough, and clear asthma, but only Kent has the famous Micronite filter.
Only Kent's Micronite filter uses miracle asbestos for more beneficial smoking.
More kind, more soothing, more mild...
No wonder your conscience tells you - Switch to Kent.
