Sing's singing only gets better over time. Except I wish that he'd not go through 1:50-1:55 so quickly. In the studio version it's prolonged and it adds a nice effect that's missing here.
Dear nitram99- I also was a new father so İ understand your feelings. The problem was that with the state of the nuclear proliferation at that time is that everyone in the world WOULD have been killed including your son and my daughter. Thankfully calmer, smarter, and more reasonable minds on both sides prevailed. İ remember working on designs for multi-nuclear warhead missles and just in awe that we as a culture and a race had come to that point. Hopefully your son will never need to ask that.
When thıs song came out I was workıng at one of the country's largest defense contractors. I had a Top Secret clearance and worked on the Reagan era 'StarWars' and ICBM upgrades. When I fırst heard thıs song I stopped ın my tracks and crıed thınkıng of the world I was (ın part) creatıng. It's very easy to be cold, caustıc and crıtıcal of Stıng's words, but I assure you I was ın the mıddle of the Cold War as a chıld and adul and you wıll never know just how close thıs world came to nuclear war.
@motographix when this song came out I was a new Dad and I would have expected my government to kill everyone in the world to protect my boy if necessary, that's what i assumed I was paying my taxes for
@nitram99 : Yeah! Starting a nuclear war that destroys the whole planet would have saved your son so much - and all of our sons and daughters too, even when we have nothing to do with you and your government!
he's definitely one of the best singers and songwriters in the whole world. his songs are so powerful and full of meaning, all of them based on very different but serious sources, like the bible or war or love. i'm only 16, but i can definitely say that i love his music. i simply get lost by listening to the orchestra-versions of his songs.
Then you haven't seen the conductor in high heels jumping around at the same concert last Monday in Montreux :) She was definitely adorable (her name: Sarah Hicks).
@patricia2big NO, YOU0RE NOT THE ONLY ONE!!!! I saw Sting some days ago, the conductor is not the same... what a pity. Although the new one (a woman) is really amazing!
"How can save my little boy / from Oppenheimer's deadly toy" ... Ever heard of a more metaphorical meaning??? The 'deadly toy' was the first atomic bomb to be dropped on a country, namely on Hiroshima. The name of the bomb was 'little boy' ... goosebumps...
@Keytaster - Great insight. I have been listening to this song since it first came out and had never made the connection between the name of the atomic bomb and the line in the song.
@Keytaster Goosebumps, really? The line really doesn't make sense. It's like saying how do I save my cat from Oppenheimer's dog which happens to be named cat. It's a cool device but the rhetoric isn't completely sensical. Great song though.
@lilblacksambo2 That's not the point. So, you're thinking that this is pure coincidence? He could've made the line "how can I save my little daughter / form Oppenheimer's instrument of slaughter" (I know, I'm not good at this *g*). See, the point is that the logic of rhetorics aren't the main thing here. Sting did purposely choose this line, hence the allegorical meaning is sound!
Forte!

How's about understanding it just the way it was said: "how can I safe my little boy from Oppenheimers deadly toy"!

It´s sad that such a master as Sting is slowly losing his ability to sing.
What I am talking about is the fact, that he needed to put this song 1,5 tune down in relation to the original of 1984.
...it´s stil a masterpiece though

@greenyKIZ - genau meine Meinung!
