I wouldn't be surprised if these cars would have posted faster times around the full circuit than the F1 cars of the day. These cars had to be 200hp up on the grand prix cars of the time, and around a track with a decent amount of straights these things would be brutally fast.
The British Promoter, John Webb of both races in England in 1978 paid $500,000 to bring USAC Championship racing to Silverstone and Brands Hatch. The reason was to spark more $ for the tracks. To put on a formula 1 race back then took $700,000 just for ONE race! It looks like they got a good crowd for this Brands Hatch indy race, so they must of made a good profit.

tvspnd1228 has the entire race UL'ed on his account if you want to see the entire race.
Rick Mears won this race. Danny Ongais led the majority of the race, but broke down with a transmission problem with just 17 laps to go.

only 15 cars? wow and we complain when indycar has 19 car fields. i guess there were times when there weren't that many cars.

Great footage!
Sounds like the British enjoyed the Americans. To bad Al Unser broke at the start.
I think ABC Broadcasted the Silverstone race the week before?
