Totally remember this -- was a junior-high noob on guitar at the time, home "sick" from school that day (probably a stomach bug or a geometry test or something). Was watching Mike Douglas, knew they'd play this song, so had my Radio Shack tape recorder ready to go. Didn't know what the song MEANT back then LOL Took a few times getting my heart broken before it sank in. Anyway, I still listen to THIS take of it, smile, and go, "Holy sh*t..." This song was really something special.
I saw this when it aired at my Grandma's house. Afterwards I asked Grandma for a 5 spot, jumped on my GT skateboard down to the Music Plus record store (back when they existed) on ventura blvd and bought the record that pretty much was single-handedly responsible for my playing career. Thanks Kevin Russell, I owe ya one!!!

FYI it was louder than hell in the Mike Douglas studio too.. The sound guys were a bit freaked actually..ha ha ha....Mike dug it and that made us very pleased.

You can tell he's not lying about the playing live. Listen to the guitar part. Listen to the vocals closely. It's not the same as the record. Some notes are held longer or shorter. Some notes have more vibrato, etc.
Mike Douglas was an awesome show. It's so forgotten. Every week you could expect at least one hip act like this and it was usually a reflection of whatever happened to be hip in the pop charts at the moment. I wish somebody would release a mega-set of this on DVD with a lot of these musical guests.
Huge talent, but casablanca did little to promote the group, sad, that casablanca's trade mark, do nothing then blame it on the band, my uncle worked there for years in the promotions department. - I hope the guys are well, if anyone knows of a show please leave the info here!! - best wishes - Tom
Hi, I saw 707 they opened for Judas Priest back in about 1980 or 1981 at Alpine Valley. I think they were a last second fill in for the scheduled opening act. Unfortunately, nobody including myself knew who they were untiil they played thier last long I could be good for you. Then the crowd quited down. They did a good job, but everyone was yelling for "priest". If I had heard of them before that concert, I would have appreciated it more. Anyone have info on this situation? Thanks
@housesoccer -- I remember it well. We were touring with Ted Nugent at the time. A few days prior to the Priest date, Ted told us a wonderful story about opening for Jimi Hendrix. No one wanted to hear Ted in those days, they wanted Jimi. So, a few weeks later, Ted took a week off from his tour. But, being an opening act stuck in the Midwest for a week, we needed some pick up dates to keep some money coming in. That's how we ended up at Alpine Valley that night. Cont ...
@housesoccer -- So anyway ... Priest was brutal to us. Half the P.A. Only purple and red lights. Limited monitors. No stage area. It was rough. And there we were in our bright colored outfits playing in front of a crowd with dog collars and spikes. Wrong place, wrong night. We did our best, but it was grueling. When we rejoined Ted, we told him the story and he laughed at our description of the whole affair. But, we lived to tell about it, so that's good. :-)
@SBGGCA --it sounds like were you in this band? I really like this song! are you still Jammin'? the 1st time I heard it, a band named Shyster out of Toledo, oh. played it in Sturgis, mi. at the Nail Lounge, the tune always stuck with me.
I'm glad this music has been posted!! This is the music that inspired my touring soundman career that began in 1983 and is still going today! 19 world tours later!
To me, 707 secretly, and perhaps accidentally inspired the entire early 80's metal-pop scene.. such as Dokken, yadda yadda yadda.
I saw 707 open for REO in Boston, and left on REO's 3rd song!
707 gave REO a musical Bitch-slap, that I still remember clearly! Thank you for posting this!
Love this song, this song got me on Z-Rock back in 1992! Cranking Craig loved this song, and was looking for a copy, for the longest time he couldn't find it, then I moved just north of Dallas, heard his request, sent him my album, and next thing I know, I did a Old Stuff show. So every time you heard this on Z-Rock, it was my album! They didn't play this where I lived, but when I traveled the country in 1982, I heard it on several stations, thanks for such a killer song!!
You can tell this is LIVE.. I have this song on itunes and have liked it since it came out, it has a different 'feel' and the keys have more 'reverb' than the original. Great vocal & Great guitar solo !
The idiots that say they are lip syncing-the studio is way different!! You better get your h e a r i n g check there are a few missing parts to the song..due to the air time on the variety shows including Saturday night special
This is one of the best songs of my high school days. I would like to have seen it rise higher in the charts as the band deserved it. This song is even better live than the record. Great memories. I have been trying to get my band to do it but it is pretty complex in parts. This is the best in 80's here.
Actually we played absolutely live, which the producers of the show thought was a huge risk. But we were so comfortable playing live and so poor at lip-syncing that we preferred the risk. We did Mike Douglas and the Midnight Special live. But, Solid Gold (which recording I don't have) made us record our track in the morning and sing live during the taping.
@jamesha175 Dude!?! This is obviously not the studio version. You obviously haven't heard this song more than a couple of times. Great live version. Such a classic solo-
@jamesha175 Not quite. This sounded completely live to me. The big clue for me was a part that I'm keenly aware of with this song and that is the reverse piano part mid-verse. To me that's a major hook in the studio version -- it's not there in this video because it must be live. Great song and a classic.
Great post. Brings back great memories, even though I was only 10 or 11 at the time. I've downloaded and saved your video in case someone tells you to take it down
Mike DOuglas by 1981 was near the end of his long run. He started his talk show over after Group W replaced him with John Davidson in 1980. The new Mike DOuglas show didn't do well ratingswise and ended quietly in 1982.
The lead singer on this song, Phil Bryant, is my father's cousin. I can't tell you how many times I've dreamed about meeting him when I was a kid...my parents had the first 707 album for free and I listened to it constantly. His vocals on "One Way Highway" are gorgeous.
Great song! I know that Phil Bryant is singing lead here but did he or Duke sing lead on the original recording? I know that Duke was the one who wrote the song.
I'm guessing it was Phil. The voice on this clip sounds pretty similar to the studio recording.
Phil also does the lead vocal on "One Way Highway" on that same album. My relatives apparently had heard that song beforehand and suggested that Phil sing it because they liked the song so much.
Duke McFadden sings the lead on the album version, Phil comes in with the I COULD BE GOOD FOR YOU line. Phil also sings LADY & ONE WAY HIGHWAY. This album has been remastered this year and is available now. Look for 707 THE FIRST ALBUM and....BEYOND. In putting it together we also added some songs that were not on the original album. Jim McClarty and I worked very hard to make the new CD a cd 707 fans would love. It is available all over the internet. Enjoy.. Posted by Lynn, Duke's sister.
Great song by 707, done after Duke McFadden departed the band. Kevin and Phil do a great job of singing and even without knowing they didn't sing the song originally you can tell the band is actually performing LIVE! A short note that I don't believe Andy Celley who is playing keyboards with the band was actually considered an "official" member of the band.
Lead guitarist is Kevin Russell. I have seen him playing samll venues in Marin County (N. of San Francisco) in the 90's. He is an awesome and very talented guitarist. I did ot know at the times I saw him that he played guitar for 707, one of my favorite bands from the early 80's. Kevin had a major heart atack in the late 90's and was out of the picture for a while but after major heart surgery he is back producing and playing around San Francisco.
This song along with Last Chance (Shooting Star), Don't You Know What Love Is (Touch), Ah! Leah (Donnie Iris), Mama Let Him Play (Doucette), I'm Leaving (Taxxi), The Beat Goes On/Switchin' To Glide (The Kings), Can't Shake You (Santers), Dreams (Barry Goudreau), Never Been Any Reason (Head East), For You (Manfred Mann's Earth Band), Go For Soda (Kim Mitchell), On The Loose (Saga), Fox On The Run (Sweet), Raise A Little Hell (Trooper), will be with us longer than any shaven head pop star.
I never knew such a video existed. Hopefully it's of a live performance. The song is strong enough it doesn't require any visuals. Save those for the tabloid pop stars.
He looks like he ought to have been doing my folks tax return in 1980, but i would buy a record based on his recommendation considering that spiffy blazer he was sporting...
Oh yeah, WMMQ in Lansing, MI plays it often...as a matter of fact, it was on their call in request show yesterday! I like this a tad better than the other post...EXCEPT the guitarist built up the solo then~~did somethin' kinda weak at the very end, darn!
I have always loved this song. A funny story about this group: this song had been out for over a year before I realized that I went to high school with the drummer! Jim is as nice as he is talented.
This is my song to my best friend of over 25 years. I've been looking for it for literally years. I've been enjoying Youtube for weeks and have been having a good time. This is the most important posting I've found. Where some of you people come across some of these vids is beyond me, just as the words of thanks for your posting this one. Much obliged.
@Jbaxter792 Yikes! Gotta diagree with you on this one Pal! Megaforce was such a paltry Journey rip on all levels. The production value alone wreaks! So not the original 707 ballsy melodious stuff.
@RockMogul Actually, I don't hear much Journey here. I hear Sammy Hagar, Rossington Collins, .38 special in this cut. I can't deny the fact that it has a super vocal track - well done, and I thought the production on this cut was good in that point in time. I haven't heard much more 707, I'm only familiar with their 2 "hits".
Both "I Could Be Good For You" and "Tonite's Your Nite" performed on The Midnight Special by 707 are now available on YouTube. Just search for 707 - Midnight Special.
@SBGGCA Hey Jim, I grew up in Lincoln Park, just south of Detroit, and i got to see you guys when you opened for REO, and like The Rockets it's a shame you guys didn't get the recognition which you deserved, and if you don't mind me saying, I thought you pounded the hell out of those drums, your whole band was great and thanks for the great tunes!
Watch the guitarist. He strikes every hack pose. He must have practiced while looking in the mirror. Hilarious! Now we see where Christopher Guest got the inspiration for Nigel Tufnel.
Huh?...I do believe Chris was an ACTOR...this guy can play...Hell, I looked like that playing air guitar on a pool cue circa 1975..try it..you can't help doing those moves....
Used to love playing this song in the A & B circuit clubs in Tampa back in the day.

Who the hell is "Bill"?

When it comes to perfectly crafted pop-rock songs it doesn't get much better than this one. Whomever produced this track knew WTF they were doing!!

They are from the Detroit area I went to school with Kevin Russell the lead player he was a good friend of mine. Soon as he graduated he went to L.A.

There's much more to 707 than just this song. My favorite song of theirs is "You Who Needs To Know" but this is still a great song as well!

@detroitdemon The Rockets were great as well as 707!

Someone like Death Cab for Cutie could cover this song rather well, I think.

Watch the guitarist. He strikes every hack pose. He must have practiced while looking in the mirror. Hilarious! Now we see where Christopher Guest got the inspiration for Nigel Tufnel.
Whammo1963 5 years ago
Huh?...I do believe Chris was an ACTOR...this guy can play...Hell, I looked like that playing air guitar on a pool cue circa 1975..try it..you can't help doing those moves....
