i listen to this and realize the honesty in heartbreak is not only what floors me, but rebuilds me as well. breaking me down and than rebuilding my soul, so that i can one day love again. but than realizing im lucky ,cuz most ppl go thru their entire life never actually being able to find or be loved at all. So if i actually died in love. i wouldnt want it any other way.Stay blessed!!!!
this song is not just about death, its about life, the heartbreak and joy, that should be celebrated. right when i leave it draws me back in. it comforts me, helps me to have to hope, and consideration for those who lack inner love. outer peace with others. this song could show them. it will show them. it's Music Therapy at its finest hour. Thanks christian, matt and the rest of you guys. STAY BLESSED!!!!!!!!

groovin! hey, what model is christian scotts trumpet? i play bass and dont know much about trumpets, but saw one that looked similar (offset?) in a local consignment music store.
@McStooge99 It's a Getzen custom trumpet. Now he uses Adams Custom Brass. He has two trumpet models that he currently uses, one is similar to the one in this video, the other has a wider arc behind the bell, so that it arcs way higher than most trumpet bell do.
love this Christian. I'm glad to say you were my friend in high school. I am proud to show my kids what you have accomplished. Love all ur music. Keep up the GREAT work.
This guy is a creative genius. There is a reason why so many awesome jazz musicians go to berklee but so many lack what it has to do what he does and on this level. Look at miles, far from the best trumpet player but he definitely had a stroke of genius.
I think Christian Scott and his band are very talented musicians-I've seen them live twice. I also love his melodies, but I do feel he needs to learn how to play with more dynamics. Both times I saw him live it's volume 10 the whole time. Also his soloing is very young in sound, then again so is he. I'd love to hear him in about ten years again.
I dont like labels, I dont like limits...but i DO like this music...his latest album is really touching me....even I prefer to write different music than that...but..who cares? Touching&reaching people is all that matters...
For those jokers who don't seem to get what I am saying perhaps, you can dig these words: You don't know what love is, Til you’ve learned the meaning of the blues, Until you’ve loved a love you've had to lose,You don't know what love is
What a masterpiece. This, this is musicianship - fantastic feeling, technical ability and a beautiful composition. And don't even get me started on the drumming... i have never heard anything like it. Simply beautiful!
Check out Chet baker ... Estate and Zingaro ... also one of his My Funny Valentine renditions ... to see how the horn can generate emotion through its tone
Christain scott is a genius. everytime i hear this song i want to shed a tear, for me its about the senseless acts of violence. people dont be so judgemental. precious life on a nice spring sunny day, ending in a blink of and eye. loud gunshots have no name, they just kill. its sucks. the question is why does this have to happen and at the end of the day i am so glad this is the type of Music that helps us with the healing process.
I just don't get it, what is good in this song ? it's not beautiful at all, especially the drums... no rythm, no versatility, only skill but for what reason ? doing weird noises ? please someone help me to understand !
that's the point. It doesn't make sense. Listen to what he is saying. The song is in honor of his friend who just got married, and was gun down. the music is suppose to represend the beauty of love, and the chaos, and uglyness of death. The music is senseless because the circumstance is. I didn't get it at first either, but as I listened to what he said, and then opened my mind, and heard it translated through the music.....it all made sense. give it another try. Hope that helped.
You hit that on the head for real!!!!! Died in love is an understanding of ones pain,Man. For those who don't get it you've never lost a loved one. I pray they never do but that is a fools wish. Death awaits us all.
@LilRell1985 You were wright, this song is beautiful, fits perfectly to the wanted mood, I'm surprised. Maybe I'll get to understand jazz more from now, so thank you.
it doesnt like quite as high as dizzys, but i do like how he has it well supported! i need to drop sum albums, and create my own custom trumpet too lol!
@mvialva when I met him, he said he had it custom made like that cuz he likes to see the audience's reactions; and to do that, he has to hold his horn down a little, so he had the bell raised so he wouldn't be flamed for bad bell position! lol!
just to make sure, that reverb effect is from the mic right? He's not replaying the melody slightly differently and letting the acoustics in the room give that effect? That would be ridiculous if he was. Either way, this is amazing.
i actually worked with christian scott over the summer and he is incredible. he is hilarious and an amazing jazz musician. i cant waait till next summer
i promise u im not. the camp is down in new orleans during the 2 middle weeks of july. its call the new jazz school. i worked with donald harrison, christian scott, david pulphus, jesse mcbride, detroit brooks, joe dyson, max moran, conun pappas, and charles bruchell. all incredible people
Anyone who knows anything about jazz knows about Love Supreme. Its not that im "hating" on it. It just gets cumbersome because it appears in a lot of compositions which is a sort of...overdone line; I mean its whatever its his stuff he can do whatever he wants with it.
I can't listen to this song yet without crying. I died in love jonesin after the wrong man. Not since Evanescence "My Immortal" has a song just pierced right through my soul and shined light on the truth that I was afraid to face. I seriously didn't understand the blues until I heard this song. When you are in lust you play R&B, but when you have your heart really broken you play the blues. Young kats arent hip to that unless they play jazz music.Every1 wants to bump and grind no1 wants to love
whatisthescore, to insult this man and his music based solely on this youtube video is simpleminded, judgmental and rude, but nobody can stop you if that's how you wanna roll.
I get it, this music is long-winded, whiney, simplistic elevator non-jazz that doesn't swing and is over one chord... There are many other real jazz musicians I'd rather listen to than this..sry
i try not to retaliate to ignorance but yo im not even Christian and that right there what you just said hurt me in a way. This man is playing his heart out on a song about one of his friends being murdered. How can you really have the heart to even criticize this song, whether you like it or not??? WOW
What's ignorant is to imply I don't care about his friend being murdered simply from a critique of his music. That's not true I think it's aweful his friend was murdered. It's just his music sounds like Kenny G mixed with Pharrell you know? It's just stylistically a steamling heap of garbage.
I like his playing, nice sound on the horn. But dont go overboard and say this is the future of music or whatever because this type of sound is nothing new.
but i like his tone. The drumming is nothing new either but it is nice. too many people go overboard. listen to tony williams, elvin jones, jack dejhonette. there is nothing new under the sun friends.
@swiftpremium But it still beats the hell out of the so called "art" of the nowadays mainstream music heck even some of the underground stuff can't compare to true music such as this.
its a custom made edwards generation x...beautiful horns..i've played a standard version and his as well..hopefully buyin one after i graduate from college
music isnt about notes..its about feeling...emotion..connection with the audience..thats like invalidating a great poem because it doesnt have big words in it
his principals may be the same, but the music is completely different. You dont think miles got inspired to go down his own path by somebody else. History is full of Miles Davis'. Thats how the world changes. It always takes a "miles" to do something first, out of the ordinary.
This performance is bleeding emotion. christian has the uncanny ability to draw out emotion from the very start of his first note, and the ride just keeps on movin. on another note, im not sure if im diggin his glasses. however, this is an amazing spectacle; i'd expect nothing less from an amazing musician.
i was at the berklee rehearsals for this gig and when they played Litany against fear, it was so emotional, i was onthe verge of tears. these guys release such pure emotion
These brothers are imitating various aspects of energy. If you can imagine, they sounded like waves of water crashing. The drummer was constantly imitating the rumbling of energy (i.e., power) the bassist in the beginning swayed in and out like the wind and Chris rode the waves. Not sure what the guitar player was trying to say...you just couldn't hear him. It's good to see muscians taking music to another level.
It's easy to think this is boring. It lacks a lot of the structure that Christian's previous work had. However, his evolution since "Rewind That" is at least tenfold, and if you consider the traditional jazz foundation from which this music has evolved, you will quickly understand why this is some of the best music that has ever existed in history to this day.
what is the definition of of structure? Because I see all the structure in the world.Just because it doesn't have a hard rock or hip hop feel like some of his previous work means nothing. Chris writes/plays w/ conviction,& you can feel the emotion in the song. When i hear it i think about someone I love who died. I can relate to the song. On the dvd to this he said he wants to use his music to vent what he's feeling and at the same time touch others & thats what hes doing from what i can see
I was replying to the people who thought this was boring. It's abstract and well beyond the conventions of what people have evolved to like, which typically features structure and hence, understanding. If you understand my comment, you can see that I have nothing but praise for Christian's work from Rewind That to this - a true understanding of jazz will show you that this is one of its truest (if not the truest) representation.
No I wasnt really trying to smash your comment i was just curious as to what you meant by structure. The rest wasnt really for you. I actually also found it funny how I went on that person who said it was boring's page and some of they're favorite videos were nelly' s tip drill..ahh..some ppl just dont know good music
Heh. Plenty of people like jazz. It's a freer kind of jazz than is quite my preference, but if you listen to either of his albums prior to this, you will hear some of the most beautiful, emotional music ever laid on record. Please do give it a chance.
You dont have to like jazz, but please dont be ignorant about it, considering that the majority of music today is rooted in jazz. Besides, Christian isn't a "Jazz musician", because what he does is more than that. Its rock, hip hop, soul, its just MUSIC. Why put such great music in a box by giving it a title? I've actually seen chris play live, great player, and kool dude..even lemme play on stage wit him DURING the show..so if you gon talk ignorant about jazz, dont do it w/ Chris
THIS is music. some of the best on the planet. When I first got this CD i got gooesbumps listening to it. so much emotion and passion. Christian Scott is the man!
this song had great moods to it...sad, emotional, energetic, and passionate!!I'm happy for Christian Scott; as an aspiring professional musician..i have picked my horn back up at some years and rekindling my passion!!!big ups to christian scott and to all of you doing what you love!!!!
