Although speaking Japanese helps and can make for a more fulfilling journey, the Japanese are wonderful warm people and you could certainly have a wonderful experience even if you don't speak any Japanese. Incidentally, I'm a former Army Brat and went to school at Zama American High School. While I was there in '68-'70, there was a movie shot on location at Camp Zama called "The Walking Major" starring Frank Sinatra Jr. about an Army major who also walked Japan to raise money for an orphanage. Unfortunately, I never saw the movie when it was released and you can't find it anywhere on VHS or DVD. Apparently, it died at the box office and the studio just shelved it.
Awesome video... Reminds me of Tyler "Kintaro" Macniven, who once walked the entire length of Japan. He produced an excellent documentary ("Kintaro Walks Japan") based on his journey that you should check out. It's on YouTube but I can't post the link here.
