yes, the celts are older than the vikings and originated in eastern europe. during the dark ages the monks kept all knowledge safe. get the book "how the irish saved civilization." great reading. btw, vikings did not have horns on their helmets. that was an invention of wagnerian opera in 19th century germany.
@Beatleschick1- No way. This one is, by far, the best out of all his works. The music is the best, the dancing is the best and the story is the best. SO patriotic to Ireland and America; you can really feel Flatley's heart in this one. The contemporary dance in this is definitely not the greatest, but the rest is fabulous.
This is the most awkward of all of Flatley's works. This show is not my taste and a far cry from Flatley's early works which slowly deteriorated and lost a little bit of quality with each show. Riverdance and Lord of the Dance were great. But it started going down hill fast with Feet of Flames with all the raunchy dance sequences.
LOL..somehow I simply can't see my Viking forefather's dancing in such a manner, let alone with those horned helmets on...with that being said...there is a lot of Danish blood in any number of the Irish families due to those old sea faring warriors...
Ahhh, so those nasty Vikings (me ancestors) invaded Ireland (home of me other half of lineage)...without that, there'd be no Jillyhawk, the CelticDane...If only the pillaging, plundering, rape & murder were not a part of it all, to this lover of peace. Breaks my heart, when one country invades another, with my country, America, being leader of the bloody & shameful pack, here, today..lessons never learned from the past..great dance vid..thanks to whomever sent it, Highness, lol! ~Peace forever!
You actually took the time to write that review? That is good artistic work, and you have no right to talk like that about anyone. If you don't like it, don't watch it.
Amazingly they did. Vikings washed once a week, combed there hair and took great pride in their appearence, Celtic men on the other hand..... Well let's say they wern't exactly Gok Wan. So the Celtic women were more attracted to the Vikings.
Well if these GIRLS are what VIKINGS look like today all I can say is ......please invade Wales next cause us Taffys will surrender with a smile on our faces !
yes i know :) but definitely they look stupid xD they should be a little bit smaller or something. But it's still one of the most awesome shows i've ever seen. Want to see them liveeee...! xD
Well being hisorical correct, Irish people are part Viking and some dare I Saxon and of course Celtic. This is just a fact of life, Dublin,Cork Galway and Wexford were viking cities. You can still the Nordic triats in the ppl there! For the record so no surprises!
You mean Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford. Cork has not been proven to have been founded by the Vikings while the celts founded Galway, therefore you are historically incorrect. I am surprised you missed out on mentioning Limerick and Waterford, two of the most prominent Viking cities (outside of Dublin) at the time of the Vikings.
Um I never said founded...I said were cities! Yes Galway was founded by Celts...so what.. Vikings raided all main cities and ports. Anyways my point was there is Viking blood in the Viens here. So you are wrong to mis quote me....two wrongs dont make a rite! Ahem Mr Perfect..lmao... thats a historical fatc!!
the thing about Michael Flatley's shows is that they're NOT all Irish Dancing, he obviously loves dance so much that he let's other styles play a part
JimmyRatz, and then Brian Boru Deateated the viking in Dublin (clontarf). About the end of the 5th century, a wave of Christian Irish Celts from Scotia, as the Romans called Ireland, established the kingdom of Dalriada on the Kintyre Peninsula
doesn't really matter how it was portrayed, but it matters how teh dancing was. and it was amazing! and i adore the costumes. i want the one the first girl was wearing ( the one who was barefoot doing the "celtic/viking pagen/ whatever its supposed to be dance)
It's for theatrical purposes I do believe. And if you wish to gripe at someone for it, opera would be the one! I myself find it quite amusing, always makes for a good chuckle!
Anyway Celtic isn't necessary meaning Irish, there was other tribes like the Tuatha de Danann and Fheir Bheags in Ireland before the Celts. The Vikings raided Ireland and were generally thought to be savage after our gold and religious artifacts, with no learning and they didn't have horns on their caps and the Irish women would not have been dancing with them, more likely hiding up a roundtower.
Actually, I want to disagree Eireann425. The Vikings landed in Ireland and founded Dublin, yes, but the Celts had been there for centuries having made their way from the continent after spreading from India-ish. That's why Celtic and Indo-European (even Sanskrit!) are so similar.
And were kicked out of Dublin by King Brian Boru, a few years an English team of scientist did research on viking DNA in Ireland and England. Loads in England practically none in Ireland, some only in Dublin, nothing in the rest of the Country.
Yep, I love that part of Irish history. But clearly not exactly what Michael Flatley was channeling here... not sure what he *was* channeling. I love it nonetheless. ^_^
Viking Scotland, known as Lothlend, Laithlinn, Lochlainn and comprising the Northern and Western Isles and parts of the mainland, especially Caithness, Sutherland and Inverness, was settled by Norwegian Vikings in the early ninth century. By the mid-century it was ruled by an effective royal dynasty that was not connected to Norwegian Vestfold. In the second half of the century it made Dublin its headquarters, engaged in warfare with Irish kings, controlled most Viking activity in Ireland
Not entirely true. The vikings fought all over the British Isles and were also absorbed into its many societies, including Ireland. They were for instance hired by Irish Chieftains as professional soldiers to field in battle against rival Chieftains. So in actual fact, The Vikings had a large role in how societies developed. Although I detest Flatley, he is to an extent correct.
@TheBambi237 Nope--the vikings invaded Ireland (let's face it. Who HASN'T invaded Ireland at one point or another? :D) and basically tried to destroy the Irish culture. The Celts hid a book of their stories/culture, known as the Book of Kells (sp?) to try to keep it alive. Many Irish knots and the designs on traditional/school/older Irish Dance dresses are from this book. Random Irish fact of the day. :D
