I disagree: to me the best version of 'Stratus' is on the CD Stanley Clarke & friends - live at the Greek, from 1994 -Clarke, Billy Cobham,Larry Carlton, Derron Johnson(keys) and Najee(sax). Carlton's style is not as fast or chop-oriented as Gambale's (who is a great player,all his own),but bluesy, soulful and melodic;also they change the groove for both the sax and guitar solos, which make it interesting.
@TheTimananda Sounds like you didn't REALLY LISTEN to THAT cut, pal. Larry Carlton, may be an overall 'smooth jazz' player, but on that version of Stratus, there's absolutely NOTHING smooth about his solo, It's soulful, blistering, melodic, bluesy and played with a cutting tone. Gambale's a great player, but this 'chops show' doesn't have cojones, per se .Wanna a hear a Gambale solo w/ cojones E carajo? Search for 'Gambale Rattletrap". Peace, Hermano.
lovely stuff - seen Cobhams clean version o n ewe toob which is great but Jeff Beck`s version with Vinnie Colaiuta is supreme, I was lucky enough to have been present when Frank played the Marshall amp 75th or was it 50th anniversary gig in Cape Town 1992 as well as pushing Ibanez guitars. He was stunning promoting his sweep-picking technique, awesome guitarist.
Bass Player Chick has a great groove, but I just can't dig the tone. Sounds kinda like a synth bass through an AM radio. Otherwise, it's a fantastic video! Thanks for posting.
Big thanks for this clip. This is the only live version I've heard Billy play that I like even half as much as the studio cut - it's always too fast. This one CRAWLS along, as it should. Gambale owns it like no one since Tommy Bolin has, and Brian Auger is fabulous as always.
This is 'Stratus' not 'Spectrum'. Please don't excite me with wrong titles again! I'd love it if anyone had a live version of 'Spectrum' (track three of the album 'Spectrum').
You mean Frank Gambale? ONE OF the greatest guitarists around today. Right up there with Allan Holdsworth. The man shreds with the best of them. I could see EVH choking trying to keep up with these "old men".
"Stratus," great stuff! What was the record date on this, and where? I love watching Cobham "save" everybody at the end of this jam. I've seen Cobham a couple of dozen times, going way back to (and before) the Billy Cobham / George Duke band. He always seemed to like playing the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Those were the days when he was playing those banana yellow drums with the big horns built into the tom-toms. Man, I'd love to see that set again! Terrific post! ****
damn the mosquitos are jamming too

@egyptianminor
except this is Billy's band, his choice of musicians and NOT Stanley's. I had the CD and didn't care for it much, especailly THAT cut.
Larry Carlton is "smooth jazz" personified and this cut needs cojones.
but, that's taste for you.

Best version of Stratus yet. Gambale is great - despite w***ing off, he really stays in the groove. Thanks for posting!

Yeah I don't know how he does it. Almost every other guitarist who uses sweep/economy picking rushes.
